While the faster Magana ferries will be in dry dock for repairs, the slower "Caribbean Queen" will provide service. The crossing takes about 45 minutes, so departures are expected to be every hour and a half. This boat has a deeper draft, and is expected to provide crossings between Isla Mujeres and Puerto Juarez for about a week.

The  Policía Municipal Preventiva (PMP) made ~20 arrests on the mainland and island this weekend, and responded to nearly half a dozen requests for assistance. Of the 13 arrests on Saturday for administrative offenses, 11 were on the island, and on Sunday there were six arrests, of which four were on the island.

      Additionally, the PMP responded to a distress call from some people whose boat had come loose, and the Navy assisted with rescuing it various meters from shore. The police also responded to a call from relatives of a tourist at the Posada beach who had convulsed and was attended to by the Red Cross paramedics and transported to the General Hospital. 

    The unusual story of the weekend was when a tourist fell off of a golf cart while traveling with friends, who failed to notice and did not return for him. Paramedics took him to the General Hospital, and it is unknown whether his companions came looking for him there.

With a goal of serving a population of 4700 children between the ages of two months and 12 years, the Second National Health Week was inaugurated in the kindergarten "Tlaloc" at 9am.  During this health campaign they intend to administer 1200 polio vaccines, 1200 doses of Vitamin A, and doses of albendazol to children between the ages of two and fourteen. (an anti parasitic). They will also be giving the second dose of the vaccine BPH to girls in fifth grade in public and private schools.
    These medications will also be available at the medical facilities of the island including Hospital Integral, el sanatorio del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS), el consultorio del Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE), and el Hospital Naval between the hours of nine and four, on weekdays.
     On last Saturday, the vaccination modules were installed at various parts of the island, such as schools and parks. This week the medical staff will be visiting various public and private schools, both kindergartens and primary schools. The Second National Health Week was scheduled from May 24th thru 30th.

The social service agency, DIF (System for Integral Family Development), held a Dental Clinic, with support from the association PEACE, providing free services to the community of Isla Mujeres. Approximately 100 people were treated, in addition to promoting oral health care in the community. This was a significant contribution to the budgets of islanders, because normally the cost of these services is high.
     The services provided included consultations, extractions, and cleanings, at the Community Center in La Gloria, between 9am and 4pm. This was made possible with the invaluable support from PEACE, with the collaboration of Lauten Jhonson (sic), and a large group of doctors and volunteers who donated their time and expertise for the benefit of the island. They will be offering this service again on the island on Thursday, May 29th, (and on the mainland at the Rancho Viejo Community Center on May 27 & 28.)

Digitalizing the Catastro department

Catastre is the department that registers property, and with digitization of their database,  a 40 percent increase in tax collection is expected.  This project includes monitoring and endorsement by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística, Geografía e Informática (INEGI).  Isla Mujeres will be the fifth municipality, of the ten in the state, to incorporate this cutting edge technology. Far reaching benefits are anticipated, both economically and for planning & development, especially in the Continental Zone.

Some Islanders have already received their permits for whale shark tours, while others expect their authorization to arrive today or tomorrow. The season officially started on May 15th and the providers of Holbox got a head start, but most of the licensees of Isla Mujeres are at peace (ellos están tranquilos). They view it as a good policy to reduce the number of permits, because only in this way will everyone have a chance. (There was a federal policy change to no longer allow one person to hold multiple permits. This is expected to free up about 50 permits, which are expected to be distributed to individual applicants.)

   The permits that the seamen are awaiting come from the federal government, via the Wildlife Agency. Then they obtain another permission from the Harbor Master, so they expect to be waiting another day. Now that the weather has become favorable, they are looking forward to taking advantage of the season, and joining the licensees who already have their permits in Isla Mujeres.

Computer system at HSBC bank was down for several hours

Both ATMs at HSBC bank were out of service for several hours, when their computer system was down, and they posted a notice on the front door. This was inconvenient for islanders, tourists, businesses, and especially for retirees who wanted to obtain their cash. This bank is located opposite the ferry terminal in Isla Mujeres. A cashier was asked when service would be restored, and the reply was that s/he did not know because they were not authorized to give out information.

Progress in renovation of the malecon

The second phase of the rehabilitation of the malecon Rueda Medina (main street) has begun. This project which was expected to be completed ~5 years ago. This work consists of preparing for the removal of the overhead wires, and their poles, for the use of underground lines. The company CITELUM has begun making grooves in the buildings and pavement opposite the port area, for the connection of power lines.

Hotel employee Juan Cruz commented, "We do not need luxury because we are crossing out of necessity, although we do have to tolerate these sorts of inconveniences." The company resumed service with the Caribbean Princess, after 5 days of interrupted service due to mechanical failures. The administration of the Magana company is in the hands of the sons of the late founder Raúl Magaña Carrillo.
