ISLA MUJERES, 9 de noviembre.- Included in the final details for the Revenue and Budget act of 2014 is the proposal to used the income from “El Garrafón” park for public works, sports, culture, and social services, said Councilman Victor Osorio Magana. The City receives 300,000 pesos monthly. There are business owners asking the City Council to discuss applying a garbage tax to residents, because they say some businesses are paying three times as much as they did in 2012. There are aldermen who are not willing to discuss this proposal, because they oppose it.

Good weather drew many visitors to Isla Mujeres to enjoy the beaches, and the services there. Other businesses had improved demand also, including those who rent golf carts, scooters, & bicycles, as well as restaurants, taxi drivers, and other tourism service providers. Some did not experience as much business as they hoped for or expected, and they say the cold fronts are a factor, but that more promotion is very important. These unnamed entrepreneurs say that effective promotion is needed to attract tourists with high purchasing power.
More layoffs likely

Given the economic crisis that the municipal government is facing, and according to an anonymous source, about 100 employees who belonged to the previous administration could be laid off "without justification", now that the opposing party is in office. It is noted that on Tuesday there were about six employees demonstrating outside the Department of Human Resources because they say they were dismissed without justification and the settlement they are entitled to by law. The City has over 600 employees. It is pretty usual to have a change of many City employees when a new party comes into office. One of the issues discussed in the media toward the end of the last administration was the money that would be owed to employees who were likely to be laid off who had been hired as temporary workers, but had acquired enough years of employment time to qualify for severance benefits. .

There was an announcement made on October 18 regarding maintenance of street lights and PE says this work has not been completed. PE says that few efforts have been made, and notes there are lights that are not lit at night in the colonia of Salina Chica, and around the walking path at Salina Grande, in La Gloria. The lighting at one of the sports domes is inadequate, and there are some lights on Juarez Avenue downtown that are on 24 hours a day. Salt causes corrosion, which is why they require maintenance.
