Now that rainy season is beginning, personnel with the municipal Department of Civil Protection are cleaning the storm drains to prevent flooding. We're reminded to put trash where it belongs to help keep our streets clean.

The Senior Citizen's Center provides elders with opportunities for physical activities, which includes games of Cachibol (similar to volleyball, with catching). They invited the Mayor to join them yesterday.
The XVII Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña International Fishing Tournament has been rescheduled for May 27, 28 & 29 due to this weekend's weather forecast. A broad area of low pressure is expected to move up from northern Central America at the end of this week, with heavy rain expected for parts of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Saturday was World Migratory Bird Day, when the Mayor joined local birding enthusiasts at Mundaca Hacienda. She noted the island has more than 300 species of birds, and said the Mundaca Hacienda will reopen to the public soon.
The Recycling Pilot Program began last week in the isle's smallest colonias of Electristas and Caribeña, where Organic and Inorganic trash are collected on different days. More than 100 kilograms of PET (plastic bottles) were collected for recycling in the first days of the program.
Islanders, especially women, are improving their economic opportunities at the Community Center by participating in courses that provide skills for self-employment and jobs. The forty-hour courses last two months and only cost 200 pesos. Subjects include Basic Excel, Artisanal Baking, Hair-cutting, Asian Cooking, Pastry, Carpentry for Women, Crafts & Jewelry, Candle Art, Manicures & Pedicures, Reflexology, Pinata-making and Basic English with a tourism focus. The first 80 graduates were honored at a ceremony last week that included exhibitions of their products.
On Saturday mornings, City officials & other employees join residents for neighborhood clean-ups. This week the "Limpiatón" was in colonia La Gloria.
The Hyperbaric Chamber received maintenance, which is used for divers who suffer from decompression illness, primarily the lobster fishermen. We're currently in the four-month ban on lobster fishing, which ends July 1st.
A fire truck with a tank that holds 4000 liters of water has been donated to Civil Protection by the city of Manteca, California. Thank-you!
Last week, the Governor announced that face masks are voluntary, noting that more than five weeks had passed with no deaths from C-19 in the state, and the average number of reported daily cases was less than twenty. Wearing a face mask is recommended on public transport, in crowds, in enclosed spaces, for those serving the public, those with comorbidities, and anyone who may have been exposed to C-19.
The deadline for Municipal Business License renewal has been extended to May 31st. The annual requirements include electric and propane inspections, as well as an overall inspection to review annual certifications from fire safety and first aid classes, recharging of fire extinguishers, safety signage, first aid kits, evacuation plans, etc. Tourism rentals are required to obtain municipal licenses and renew them annually. Rentals lacking these items are generally illegal, unlicensed & not paying the required annual fees for trash collection & other infrastructure. This year, smoke detectors and emergency lighting have been added to the rental requirements, as well as a municipal Sanitation Fee of ~$10/wk per guest.
Turtle nesting season has begun and we're reminded not to disturb them, which includes NOT approaching or touching them, being noisy, taking flash photos or using flash lights. Collecting or purchasing turtle eggs or products is illegal and should be reported to the TORTUCEL phone number on the graphic.

The
Amerimed Centro de Atención Médica (CAM) in colonia Electristas will
open next Saturday, May 21st. The caption says they will be open 7 days a
week, to residents & visitors, with urgent care available and
specialists, as well as laboratory and x-ray services.
May 9--The
Commander of the Naval base, Vicealmirante Javier Abarca, explained
that jet skis aren't permitted near the beaches of the Isla Mujeres and
no permits will be issued. He said ten jet skis are currently impounded,
whose penalties will be determined by the Harbor Master, based on the
each case, after verifying their registrations.
May 7-- There were two electrical outages Thursday night, and the airfield generator was running yesterday.
May 7--The
municipal Police Department has received 21 new patrol vehicles, which
include eight trucks, three compact cars and 10 moto-patrols. In a
previous article, the department Comandante, Celestino Palomo Balam,
said that about half would be used on the island and half on the
mainland part of the municipality. He noted they already had 11 vehicles
and one four-wheeled motorcycle in operation.
May 6-- The 31st edition of the Regata al Sol is on its way from Pensacola Florida. Their events begin Sunday, and the recognition ceremony by the City Council is on Tuesday. On Wednesday, they'll attend the traditional Captain's cocktail party at the Rock House (Casa de las Piedras) at noon, followed by their Mardi Gras parade at 5p, and the basketball game downtown at 7p. The parade assembles near Buho's, (unless the water-network construction nearby relocates it). Events conclude with the trophy presentation on Thursday evening.
The first Regata al Sol got off to a rocky start in 1965, when no US boats wanted to participate due to political issues between the US & Cuba. It ended up being a race between two sailboats, provided by the Pensacola Naval Officers Club, who sailed one, and the other was crewed by Mexican Naval officials, with sailors from Merida & Isla Mujeres. The Mexicans won.
May 5--
Today is the Aniversario de la Batalla de Puebla, aka "Cinco de Mayo". It was commemorated at the middle school, Benito Juarez, with the Mayor in attendance, who posted the last four photos.
Although Mexico won the battle against the French, they lost the war. For three years, the country was ruled by Emperor Maximilian & his 24 year-old wife, Carlota, daughter of the King of Belgium. When the young Empress visited Merida in late 1865, she was welcomed by a 101-gun salute, cheering crowds, and a rain of flowers, as she passed thru 64 triumphal arches. She spent two months touring the Yucatan peninsula.
Two years later, she fled to Europe as the Empire was falling, and suffered a nervous breakdown after her spouse was executed by a Mexican firing squad, under orders from President Benito Juarez. The final battle was fought in Merida on June 15, 1867.
