Municipal government seeking solutions to the "White Syndrome" that is having a serious impact on the reefs of the Mexican Caribbean.
With the aim of taking measures to generate less impact on the reefs near the coast of Isla Mujeres, in response to "White Syndrome which is affecting the corals of the Mexican Caribbean, the municipal government, via the Department of Ecology and the Environment has undertaken a series of conferences to provide information about the situation. The Director of that agency, Carlos Barranco Garcia said it is important to stay informed about the effects this syndrome could cause to corals near the coast of the municipality, in order to be able to take the necessary measures and avoid a greater impact on the marine ecosystem and the environment.
The coordinator of the Healthy Reefs Initiative for Healthy People, Melina Soto said that the Mexican coasts are in an emergency situation with the "White Syndrome" because this disease kills the organisms quickly by destroying their living tissue and leaving just a dead skeleton. "You must seek a way to counteract the damage, because in less than six months this disease has killed 30 percent of the Mexican Caribbean Coral and it is truly lethal," she said.
Melina Soto acknowledged the work being done by the government of Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis by taking interest in working in a coordinated manner to avoid greater impact on the corals of the municipal coasts and the entire Mexican Caribbean.
Eighty percent of residents are cooperating with the "Ya Es Hora" (Now Is The Time) program for trash collection at night around the island. It is collected after 2p in Sac Bajo, and from 8p to 10p downtown, at the beaches, and in the colonias of Canotal and la Gloria. The Mayor said he is very happy with the response by the citizenry, but to be a green municipality, it is necessary that people learn to separate trash correctly and practice the three R's: Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse. He said simple actions can make a difference such as purchasing in bulk, declining straws, and using glass glasses instead of plastic.
The Director of Public Services, Pablo Jesus Moreno Povedano asked that islanders begin separating their trash into two groups, organic and inorganic, to facilitate their processing after collection. He explained, "Trash can be classified into 15 groups, including glass, PET plastic, cardboard, and cans, but we understand that not everyone has the information or a accustomed to separating their trash in this manner, so we are asking you to start with Organic and Inorganic. This adjustment will be made in a gradual manner, which will make it easier."

The crew of "Chachalaca", captained by Anthony Mendillo Jr., caught a 340 pound swordfish (pez espada...a comment says it is a blue marlin) about ten miles south of Isla Mujeres, noting the "fight" lasted just over three hours. Mr. Mendillo said it was not an easy fight with the tremendous fish, and recalled that his last exceptional catch with a rod was 12 years ago, and that was a 540 pound blue marlin.
Locals and visitors who were present at the Lima Zuno family dock were impressed, and it is noted that the company "Keen M" is very popular with both foreign and Mexican fishermen who are seeking an experience capturing billfish in the waters of Isla Mujeres. VIDEO
The Navy carried out a medical evacuation from the cruise ship "Norwegian Breakaway" 3 miles (5 km) away from Isla Mujeres, upon request from the ship's captain for a passenger who was having symptoms of a heart attack. Naval medical personnel attended to the 50 year old male from the United States, who was taken to the Naval station at Puerto Juarez. He was in stable condition when he was placed in a private ambulance to receive specialized medical attention.
Strong sanctions will be imposed against 'pirate' rentals of golf carts
The new Director of the Mobility Institute (IMOVEQRoo) in the Northern Zone of the state, Vivian Castillo Dzul, met with golf cart rental concessionaires, who requested strong sanctions be imposed for those who rent without having a concession, noting a 'pirate' cart was recently in an accident involving tourists.
Ms Castillo Dzul said, "They asked that we address the issue of piracy, and therefore this will be the first action of the Mobility Institute." She said this request will be addressed, and they are seeking to work in a coordinated manner with state and federal authorities for the island and the Continental Zone. She emphasized that now the Mobility Law imposes very high sanctions, which will be applied against those who rent golf carts without having a concession.
The meeting with the new director was attended by various golf cart concessionaires, and included the president of the association of golf cart rental agencies in Isla Mujeres, Rene Contreras Bonilla.

The suspension occurred shortly after 6am without major impact since there was a fresh breeze. The work along Jesus Martinez Ross had begun on Thursday, and closed the street on Friday and Saturday. The workers included crews from Cancun and Tizimin, as well as from Isla Mujeres. There was heavy machinery and an electrical generator in case of emergency.Also, two power generators were installed at the airfield to provide electricity for the island in case of any outages.

Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

On the first Monday of each month, there is usually a civic ceremony in the morning, often on the Town Square.
Fishermen in this region are banned from catching Lobster, Grouper and Octopus in March. Lobsters kept in captivity continue to be available, along with frozen tails. LINK

The parades are Sunday & Monday at 3p from the Naval Base to the
Monument to the Fishermen, so Rueda Medina will be closed. Although the
map doesn't show it, traffic is usually detoured down Juarez & the
section of Hidalgo that is south of the Square (which usually affects
where parking is allowed on Juarez, temporarily.)It says...Due to celebrations for Carnaval 2019 in Isla Mujeres, March 1-5, there will partial, temporary road closures for the performances of the dance troupes.
On March 3 & 4, Rueda Medina will be closed during the parade. Please plan ahead, and thank you for your understanding.

On or around March 4th, there is usually a ceremony commemorating the arrival of Francisco Hernandez Cordoba in 1517, who is credited with discovering the Yucatan and what is now Mexico, after landing on Isla Mujeres. The expedition of 110 men and 3 boats sailed from Cuba and and sailed around the coast, battling with the Maya, until all but one were injured, and over 50 had died.
