Municipal activities to commemorate World Water Day LINK
Municipal activities to commemorate World Water Day included a clean up at Salina Grande lake with more than 100 volunteers, organized by the municipal Departmen of Ecology and the Environment, whose director noted that work to care for these ecosystems is carried out throughout the year. On this day special emphasis was given to encourage the inhabitants to be involved and to raise awareness about the necessary conservation and importance of water in the lives of all living beings.
He said educational discussions took place at Cesar Mendoza primary school and at Benito Juarez middle school about water management, in coordination with the NGO, Friends of Sian Ka'an, the Aguakan company, and the municipal ZOFEMAT (Federal Zone) agency.

New Mobility Law and taxistas LINK
Under the new Mobility Law, those holding taxi concessions will be required to pay a fee at the state Office of Revenue Collection, and the leader of the union has agreed to comply with the guidelines of the new law, including requirements that the vehicles have air bags, insurance and are recently acquired. (The cut off is 2014, I think.)

Seeking donations for continued search for Canadian diver lost Saturday near Cozumel LINK (Posted March 21)
Cameron Donaldson is from Canada and performs therapeutic diving training for the disabled and people with post-traumatic stress disorder in James Bay. He lived in Cozumel part of the year, and returned to Canada for the summer diving program.
There is more information on the Go Fund Me page, where they have raised more than 55,000 for renting planes and helicopters, which cost about 600 dollars an hour according to this article, and to rent boats. They have been analyzing current patterns in the Gulf and Caribbean. Tracking could extend to the south of the US and to Cuba, whose governments have been informed about his possible presence in their waters.
Regarding private efforts in the search, in the morning nine boats left Holbox, going to Cape Catoche. Drones equipped with thermal cameras flew over Puerto Morelos, and tried going toward Isla Mujeres, but weather conditions caused navigation to be closed for small boats and interrupted the effort.
Two private planes flew over the Key Shores area in Florida for five hours. A group of volunteers arrived by boat to the northern tip of Cozumel island, where there is a great deal of vegetation and few people, and searched from dawn until 4pm. A team of rescue diving experts searched the area where he had been diving, going very deep.
The aerial and maritime search continued with 3 small planes and a helicopter belonging to the state government of Quintana Roo.

Reservations indicate hotels should have high occupancy during Easter vacation

Se prevé lleno total

Easter vacation will begin on Saturday, April 13, and Palm Sunday will be the following day, which begins the Holy Days, including the commemoration of the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ, and the resurrection on Easter Sunday. It is noted that in the morning (Saturday) more sargasso arrived than the previous day, but it wasn't a problem on North Beach where thousands of families were enjoying the beach at noon. Gusts of wind from the cold front caused more sargasso to enter the beach area know as El Riito. This situation is expected to change by Tuesday, with the direction of the winds moving from north to east. Good weather is expected to continue, according to forecasts.

Simulation of a sea rescue

Simulacro de rescate marítimo

March 21    On Thursday, at the southern part of the Naval dock, a rescue simulation was conducted, of saving more than a dozen people from the nearby waters. There were also activities of preparation, physical exercise and competition. About a dozen sailors-marinos were training in the water in front of Rueda Medina, who have training in safety and rescue techniques to save lives at sea. It is noted that they must be in excellent condition because emergencies can always happen when every day hundreds of tourists visit the Bay and go snorkeling to enjoy the underwater beauty. The rescued a national tourist a few weeks ago who had been separated from the group in the National Marine Park. (They also recently rescued a fellow who fell off a jet ski while crossing the Bay fron North Beach going back to Cancun).
Search continues for Canadian diver Cameron Donaldson lost Saturday while diving off Cancun (with his mother) and a Go Fund Me account has collected more than $55,000 dollars to help pay for planes, helicopters, and boats. Since Monday, there has been an alert and searching along the coasts of Solidaridad, Puerto Morelos, Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Lázaro Cárdenas and the Yucatan coast, to try to locate Cameron. (see translation above).

First mats of sargasso arrive to the island

Llegó el primer ramal de sargazo a la isla

March 21 Effects of Cold Front #44 cause the arrival of the first mats of sargasso to North Beach, which was minimal, especially compared to the amount that arrived last fall. It arrived during the early hours on Thursday, near the el Riito beach, and ZOFEMAT personnel were out early to clean it up. The beach was clean but sargasso could be seen at the base of the bridge to Mia hotel. The marine current dispersed a line of the seaweed that was in the water.
According to official estimates, the sargasso only affected about 10 percent of North Beach, and the rest was completely clean. Playa Centro looked completely clean, as usual. It is noted that the effects of the full moon favored this arrival, with the high tides which facilitate its arrival into the el Riito area, allowing it to cross over the rock barrier near the Casa de las Rocas.

See previous editions for info about the emergency generator, which includes two diesel units.  The CFE are about to being work on the changeover downtown to an underground network along Rueda Medina, along 1100 meters, which could cause interruptions. It is noted that there are plans to replace the submarine line of seven kilometers, which has caused several failures despite maintenance work done during the past four years.
