He said they will constantly work for the benefit of the islanders, and especially families which are vulnerable, both on the island and in the Continental Zone. The Board of Directors seeks to efficiently channel the resources and activities of the Isla Mujeres DIF to continue to benefit more families, in a transparent manner.
The Mayor recognized the work that the DIF has done during the first 100 days of his administration, providing timely and constant attention to the citizens, and he will maintain his support for the municipal DIF to continue to provide services and quality programs for the benefit of Island families.

Maria Evangelina Lopez Bacab said (alleges) that her ex-partner held and tortured her son for two hours, causing 13 wounds with a knife, including injuring his jugular vein. She said, "Fortunately my son received treatment promptly, and he received several transfusion to replace blood lost during the aggression." He remains hospitalized in Cancun. His mother is seeking assistance from the Procuraduria de Justicia, because under the new penal system, the assailant must be charged within 48 hours, or be released.
She said, "The (alleged) aggressor of my son is also in the Cancun City General Hospital, because he was injured during the arrest. Apparently they operated and he is a few rooms away from where they have my son. Despite the existence of a complaint that has been filed, there is no one taking charge of the judicial process." (a pesar de existir una denuncia la cual quedo asentada no hay ahora quien se encargue de la judicializacion)
She said that the 48 hour deadline will expire on Wednesday at 3p and family members are very concerned, because they fear that the assailant could be released. The complaint against her 27 year old ex-partner, (Limbert A.B.) for intentional injuries, was filed the same day the events occurred.
13% increase in passenger traffic

The Director of the Port Authority APIQRoo, Alicia Ricalde Magana said that passenger traffic increased 13 percent in 2016, compared to 2015 at the Maritime Terminal of Isla Mujeres.
In 2016, the Isla Mujeres Maritime Terminal registered the arrival of 1,939,738 passengers which is a 13.41 increase over 2015 when there were 1,710,327 passengers.
The cargo ferries also registered an increase of 18.96, with 130,426 passengers from January to November in 2016, compared to 109,367 in 2015.
She noted that in addition to the increased number of passengers on the ferries and car ferries, there was an increase in passengers arriving in tourism boats and other small and medium sized vessels.

The Ultramar ferry company clarified that the recent increase in rates on the Isla Mujeres-Puerto Juarez route applies only to tourists and state residents. The company posted on social networks that current rates will be maintained for islanders, who are concerned that that ticket fees could be increased in 2017, with the announcement that the cost of diesel will rise at the beginning of the year.
On Friday, Dec. 22, there was a 22% increase in the price of tickets for tourists, from 82 to 100 pesos for one way and from 164 to 200 pesos for a round trip. The tourist children's tickets are 80 pesos one way and 160 round trip.
The Quintana Roo Plan went up to 78 pesos one way and 146 pesos for a round trip, and for their children, tickets are 46 and 84 pesos.
The other rates are unchanged with INAPAM (senior citizens) at 26 pesos one way and 52 round trip. The local plan is 42 pesos one way and 84 round trip, and for local children the cost is 16 pesos one way and 32 pesos round trip, according to the web page https://www.ultramarferry.com/es/tarifas. This article says the beaches were busy from an early hour and gives statistics about the number of passengers this year at the Isla Mujeres Maritime Terminal. It is projected that by the end of the year, approximately 4,287,300 passengers will have been mobilized, including both arrivals and departures, and local users. This surpasses last year's total of 3,637,200 mobilizations.
From January to November 2016, the Maritime Terminal registered the arrival of 1,939,738 passengers, representing an accumulated growth of 13.41 percent compared to 2015, when 1,710,327 passengers arrived.

This has the same information that was translated in the DQR section, and assurances by the Mayor concerning quality public services and safety for both residents and visitors.
He said, "Any emergency that occurs will be addressed immediately, including the increased generation of trash and the increased traffic." He ensured we will have a clean municipality with quality public services, attending to every colonia and neighborhood on the island and in the Continental Zone. Garbage collection efforts have been increased to ensure the streets stay neat, to offer families a more harmonious environment, reducing health risks and presenting a better urban image.

Dec. 11 Sunday Celebration in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe at the Chapel Guadalupana in Meteorolgocia (which overlooks the Caribbean, across from Mango cafe), with singing of Las Mananitas before midnight, possibly with Mariachis.
Dec 12 Monday Day of Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico's patron Saint.
People honor her with pilgrimages and efforts of endurance, such as the annual run around the island, which will probably be held in the morning, usually from the downtown church to Punta Sur to the Guadalupe Chapel.
There is a procession in the afternoon with children dressed up as Juan Diego, shepherds, and shepherdesses usually between the Chapel Guadalupana and the downtown church, and sometimes there are horses. Juan Diego saw the vision of the Virgin of Guadalupe on the hill at Tepeyac, 485 years ago.

During the Posadas, there is usually a dance on the Town Square, featuring regional dances & costumes from different states of Mexico. The schools may have Posada plays, which are reenactments of Mary & Joseph being refused shelter. Posada means 'inn'.

Currently the DIF is collecting blankets, coats, and other warm items for residents in need in the Continental Zone on the mainland.

Celebrating New Year's in Isla Mujeres
To celebrate New Year's Eve, some Isleno families set up tables in the side streets with pinatas strung overhead, and dine on turkey stuffed with seasoned ground meat, while others crowd the Town Square for live music, dancing, and fireworks. Each neighborhood brings in the New Year with a bang, and the skies explode with color in all directions.
During the NYE countdown, there is a tradition of eating twelve uvas de buenas suerte (grapes of good luck), each representing a month, with a toast of champagne or cider. The party on the town square continues all night long. At the other end of the isle, people gather at Punta Sur to greet the first rays of the sun at the eastern-most point in Mexico.
Other customs include cleaning your house on New Year's Eve & sweeping out bad luck. Wearing red underwear could bring you love in the New Year, or your white undies may bring you peace, while yellow represents wealth. Those who hope to travel should grab an empty suitcase and carry it around the room or the block, and set it by the door. If you drop a shoe on New Year's morn and it lands "boca arriba" (face up) you will enjoy good luck in the upcoming year.
The old year is represented by a life sized character called El Viejo, The Old Man, who is later filled with fireworks and set ablaze. He may resemble a politician, and he is usually holding cigars & tequila. Fireworks are everywhere, and their names are metralletas (literally "machine guns" – but it means fire crackers), cañones (larger fire crackers), voladores (rockets in many different sizes), chifladores (whistlers), and barre pies ("foot sweepers", that spin on the ground & shoot sparks).
Kids receive toys on Dia de los Reyes, January 6, when families, friends, and coworkers share rosca de reyes. King's cake, usually with hot chocolate. If you get the Baby Jesus,it means you'll be hosting a party & providing the tamales on Candlemas Day, Feb. 2.
