ISLA MUJERES, 9 de diciembre.
"We are complying with the Law, with the statutes of the Taxi Drivers Union "Gustavo Diaz Ordaz" with the announcement of the call for the election of the new leaders for 2017-2020 ," said the current president, Eduardo Peniche Rodríguez. He said everything has been registered with the Board of Conciliation and Arbitration, and has been approved regarding the time and the form.
He said all that remains is to carry out the assembly when the date arrives, when it will be decided whether Sr. Peniche is reelected or support is given to another candidate, but it will be the decision of the assembly. The election is scheduled for December 17 at 5pm by secret ballot, as has been requested for a long time.
He said, "It is true that the statues no longer allow me to participate in this contest, but there is a transitional clause which says: "For something that is not covered in the statues, the highest authority is the assembly and they are the ones who decide."

Putting obstacles in the way of "Wato"

There have been allegations of fraud regarding the voter's list for the Isla Mujeres Union of Taxi Drivers "Gustavo Diaz Ordaz", because the leader Eduardo Peniche Rodriguez, aka "Wato" wants to continue in power. The first alleged victim was Javier Acereto Lopez who supports the "Allies for Democracy" group. He said he will resort to legal recourse to stop Sr. Peniche from his attempt to put himself in power for another three years when the election is held on Dec. 17th at the Taxi Union lodge.
"When I went to register I was not in the system, but I have several ways to prove that I am a partner, including the credential that is signed by the leader himself. Then I tried to pay my dues, they were also not accepted. Therefore they want to disqualify me. I will not allow it," said Javier who has studied to be a lawyer.
He spoke in the presence of Miguel Chan Mena, who leads the Allies for Democracy group, and Julio Osorio, who is also a member, among other partners, and Sr. Acereto said there are several other cases of preventing the paying of dues. It is the same on the island as in the Continental Zone. The amount of dues for this person was 7850pesos which amounts to nearly a year of dues owed. But this amount of arrears is fairly common and occurs with many partners, who then get caught up.
In an interview, Eduardo Peniche explained that there are three types of announcements; one for the electoral issue with the required data (planillas contendientes), then the general assembly that will be held on Sat. Dec. 17 at 4p, when the report will be given about the financial status of the union, with general matters. When that ends, a recess will be called and then they will initiate the elective assembly as a unique issue. The three documents were presented and signed by the local Board of Conciliation and Arbitration (JLCA).. He said, "Therefore, the whole procedure is legal....if the assembly wants me to continue, I will." He said voting will be transparent and secret. His arguement regarding his continuing for another period to complete 15 years is that, "In the transitional paragraph it says that what is contemplated in the statue, the assembly can resolve.
Emotional procession into the Bay
Emotiva procesión marítima. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
The celebrations of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, the patron saint of Isla Mujeres, concluded with the traditional maritime procession in the bay with dozens of small and medium boats participating. The last procession in the streets was led by the parish priest Raúl Sánchez Alonso, in the company of the Parish Council, who boarded the boat where the icon had been placed, for the trip out into the Bay, with more than a thousand Catholics participating.
During the two weeks of celebrations, attendees included the Bishop of the Cancun-Chetumal prelature, Monsignor Pedro Pablo Elizondo, as well as clerics from other parishes, many children, and more than 20 organizations (gremios). During this last tour thru the streets, the parishioners could bring their sick to the image to receive a blessing, and express their faith that she could improve their spiritual and physical health.
The celebrations included dances and bullfights, and entertainment activities which visitors could enjoy, as well as the festivals held by each group at their headquarters, such as the fishermen's cooperatives, the lanchero boat tour provider's cooperatives, the founders, the children, the youths, and the police.
Regarding the celebrations, historian Fidel Villanueva Madrid said this was the 105th anniversary of the Patroness of Isla Mujeres who was brought here in 1911 from the Boca Iglesia church, by the islander fishermen Cristino Avila, José Cardós and Pablo Xooc. He wrote on his Facebook account that more than five generations of islanders have worshiped it with a fervor that continues to grow today.
Replacing damaged posts
Sustituyen postes dañados. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
A dozen electrical poles have been changed in recent weeks by the CFE (Federal Electrical Commission), and this is expected to continue in upcoming days, to ensure a supply of electricity without problems during the high season which is about to start.
They have completed work along the Caribbean coastal road, as well as inside the colonia neighborhoods. There are posts that were placed after Hurricane Wilma in 2005, which needed treatment with retardant chemicals, because wood is the most appropriate material for these coastal areas, according to the CFE staff.
While the concrete posts may last up to two decades with special paint, the wooden poles have been known to last three decades in the downtown area. Residents have been concerned that when rust deteriorates the steel inside the concrete posts, then pieces of concrete fall off onto the sidewalks and streets, which is hazardous for pedestrians, such as children who frequent the walkways.
The post that was just retired from Nicolas Bravo street downtown had metal rods in an advanced state of deterioration at the narrow end. It had been located near the basketball court by the Town Square ("Jose de Carmen Pastrana"). During this work, electrical service was disconnected for three hours and traffic on the road was also interrupted.

- The Cahuameros Club of Isla Mujeres Nueva Generación are hoping to move into the second overall position in the Major League of Basketball of Quintana Roo on Saturday and Sunday when they play against Cozumel at the Convention Center, . It is noted that the Convention Center has been renovated, which should provide a pleasant surprise for the players and fans. The game on Satuday is at 8p and on Sunday at noon.
The Cahuameros suffered two painful defeats against the Los Dorados at Playa del Carmen, which moved the Isla Mujeres team from first to third, behind the Cozumel Islanders and the Playa del Carmen Dorados. Those two teams are tied regarding the number of games won, but the Cozumel Islanders are ahead in the number of points.

Día de Guadalupe is an important holiday in Mexico
According to accounts published in both Nahuatl and Spanish in the 1600s, the image of the Virgin Mary appeared to the indigenous peasant, Juan Diego, in the hills of Tepeyac in the outskirts of Mexico City on December 9, 1531, when he was on his way to the city from his village. (Later she appeared to his sick uncle also.) The dark-skinned young woman was surrounded by light & spoke in Nahuatl, telling Juan Diego that a church should be built in her honor at the top of Tepeyac hill, where there had once been an Aztec Temple to the goddess Tonantzin.
But when Juan Diego related this to the Spanish archbishop, the cleric didn’t believe him and told him to go back to Tepeyac and ask the Virgin for a miracle. The Virgin told Juan Diego to gather roses from the top of the hill (unseasonably and in an area of cactus & scrub). She helped arrange the flowers in Juan Diego’s tilmátli (cloak), and he carried them back to Mexico City.
When he arrived on December 12 and opened his tilmátli in front of the archbishop, the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe had been imprinted onto the cloak. The tilmátli with the imprint is still on display at the Basilica de Guadalupe, one of the most visited shrines in the world.
Celebrating New Year's in Isla Mujeres
To celebrate New Year's Eve, some Isleno families set up tables in the side streets with pinatas strung overhead, and dine on turkey stuffed with seasoned ground meat, while others crowd the Town Square for live music, dancing, and fireworks. Each neighborhood brings in the New Year with a bang, and the skies explode with color in all directions.
During the NYE countdown, there is a tradition of eating twelve uvas de buenas suerte (grapes of good luck), each representing a month, with a toast of champagne or cider. The party on the town square continues all night long. At the other end of the isle, people gather at Punta Sur to greet the first rays of the sun at the eastern-most point in Mexico.
Other customs include cleaning your house on New Year's Eve & sweeping out bad luck. Wearing red underwear could bring you love in the New Year, or your white undies may bring you peace, while yellow represents wealth. Those who hope to travel should grab an empty suitcase and carry it around the room or the block, and set it by the door. If you drop a shoe on New Year's morn and it lands "boca arriba" (face up) you will enjoy good luck in the upcoming year.
The old year is represented by a life sized character called El Viejo, The Old Man, who is later filled with fireworks and set ablaze. He may resemble a politician, and he is usually holding cigars & tequila. Fireworks are everywhere, and their names are metralletas (literally "machine guns" – but it means fire crackers), cañones (larger fire crackers), voladores (rockets in many different sizes), chifladores (whistlers), and barre pies ("foot sweepers", that spin on the ground & shoot sparks).
Kids receive toys on Dia de los Reyes, January 6, when families, friends, and coworkers share rosca de reyes. King's cake, usually with hot chocolate. If you get the Baby Jesus,it means you'll be hosting a party & providing the tamales on Candlemas Day, Feb. 2.
