Navy rescues fisherman who suffered health problems while at sea

ISLA MUJERES, 1 de septiembre.-
    The Navy evacuated a 72 year old fisherman who was vomiting blood yesterday at noon and took him to the Naval Station in Puerto Juarez, where a waiting ambulance of the Red cross transferred him to a hospital in Cancun.  He was unable to stand when they transferred him from the fishing vessel.
     The Harbor Master of Puerto Juarez received the call at 11am, when the fishing boat "Scorpion" was approximately 30 kilometers from Isla Mujeres.The Navy released this information in a statement, explaining that the medical evacuation is part of its legal responsibility to safeguard lives at sea.

  Seaweed has been arriving on the beaches of the eastern coast of the island, from downtown to the colonias, with no known plans to remove it, since these are not swimming areas. The day after it began landing last week, it was removed from the beach area known at  “El Riíto” by an altruistic group and the staff of ZOFEMAT. In social networks, it is noted that the same situation has been reported from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel island, indicating a great amount of saragossa can be found floating near the coasts of the state of Quintana Roo.

ISLA MUJERES, 31 de agosto.-
    The Harbor Master of Isla Mujeres, Ismael Gonzalez Gil explained that the port was closed for small boats at 9am due to weather conditions, which is expected to continue until tomorrow, depending on climactic conditions.
      He said there are about 300 boats engaged in whale shark tours, of which 175 are from Isla Mujeres. He said yesterday some of them were forced to return to the island, while others who had not yet sailed cancelled their trips.
       The same situation was experienced by the boats that visit Isla Contoy, the boats traveling from "Puerto" (Juarez) to Isla Mujeres with tourists on board, and the fishing boats.

As part of the ongoing program of environmental education, the municipal Department of Ecology, with the company Aguakan, will offer a showing of the movie "Happy Feet" On Sept. 11 at the Dome in La Gloria at the Plaza Bicentenario at 7:30pm. Free.
La Dirección Municipal de Ecología en coordinación con la empresa Aguakan ofrecerán la proyección de la película Happy Feet, con motivo de dar continuidad al programa permanente de Educación Ambiental.


On Tuesday morning, the Mayor of Isla Mujeres, Agapito Magana Sanchez, took a tour of the new hospital and expressed his support for the medical staff and employees in general. He emphasized that that his government is ready to collaborate on whatever is required for its optimal operation. The hospital Director, Dr. Pedro Zapata Loya, accompanied the Mayor and the other officials on the tour of the various areas which are serving island families.
   The new hospital has a greater capacity to treat patients, including an area for hospitalization of adults, four isolation rooms, a waiting room for the hospital area, a lounge for the residents & interns, and offices for administration, management, and Seguro Popular insurance. There are areas for epidemiology, digital medical records, a conference room, and a boardroom. There are areas for  maternity, newborns, a delivery room, a nursery, a surgical area, and an incubator.
    The Mayor told the Director that he has the full support of the municipal government for the operation of this wonderful hospital provided for the islanders by the governments of Enrique Pena Nieto and of Roberto Borge Angulo.
        Regarding the possibility of the Governor coming to inaugurate the hospital, the Mayor said they are awaiting confirmation for Mexico's Secretary of Health, Mercedes Juan Lopez, who has expressed a desire to attend this historic event for the municipality.

ISLA MUJERES 1 September.- After nearly 24 hours of being closed for navigation by boats under 40 feet, the port was reopened at 7am, although the Harbor Master advised extreme caution for small boats. At dawn on Tuesday, the weather was cloudy and some light rainfall was recorded, but as the hours passed the weather improved to show some sun peeking out, alternating with clouds. The port had been closed on Monday at 9a for boats under 40 feet, due to the weather.
   The dreaded 'septihambre' has begun and there were few people at the beaches, most of whom were staying at nearby hotels. (Hambre means hunger. This pun means that times are hard in septiembre/September). It is noted that there is less activity at the businesses, including the stores and the golf cart rental agencies.
     Forecasts for Wednesday predict cloudy skies at dawn, with gradual improvement. The Harbor Master said Tropical Storm "Fred" in in the Atlantic, far from the coast of Quintana Roo, and it presents no danger so far, and is being kept under surveillance. He said there are two tropical waves currently under surveillance, with one moving west at 46 kilometers per hour and the other near the Antillas moving west at 28 kilometers per hour. He advised extreme precautions because there are forecasts of waves reaching 1.2 to 2 meters on the open seas. (A meter is 3.3 feet)

The president of the fishing cooperative Justicia Social, Baltazar Gomez Catzin, said there was a meeting Tuesday at noon at the Casa de Cultura to finalize the details of the procession on Saturday, Sept. 12th to move Our Lady of Charity to the chapel at the fishing camps on Isla Contoy. They are expecting 80-85 small boats, and Ultramar will provide two larger vessels, because at least 800 people are expected to participate. It has yet to be confirmed that another large boat will be provided by the nautical service providers of Aldo Chaviano.
     The procession will depart from the concrete pier, starting at 8-8:15am, following a Mass in honor of the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre at the Church of Immaculate Conception (on the Town Square).  Sr Gomez said, "At the meeting I asked for the cooperation of the crews of the small tourism services boats  and of the fishing cooperatives because their assistance is needed to transfer the people who are aboard the larger boats, because they cannot dock on the coast of Isla Contoy. For this reason it is necessary that the people who disembark from the small boats wait on the beach, and later that they don't leave Isla Contoy without returning those people to the larger boats." He reminded those who are participating to bring their food and beverages, and mentioned with some sarcasm that there are no stores on our neighboring island for shopping, nor for buying a soda.
    Sr Gomez encouraged the islanders who are planning to enjoy a Saturday morning on Contoy to participate in the religious celebration which will take place at 7am. Priority will be given to those who attend Mass and who accompany the procession from the church to the pier.
        He said, "What happens almost every year is that many do not attend church, but instead go directly to the pier to have a place on a boat, and when the procession arrives at the pier, there is not enough room for the people who participated in the religious procession from the church, which does not seem fair, and there for this year priority will be given to those who accompanied Our Lady of Charity from the Church to the pier."

This is preceded by a Mass at 7am at the Church of Immaculate Conception on the Town Square and a procession to the pier. Priority for space on the boats will be given to those in the procession from the Church, which is expected to arrive at the dock around 8am. There will be two or three larger boats provided for the public, who are encouraged to bring food and drink since none is available on Isla Contoy.
