Weather affects whale shark tours
The whale shark season will officially end on Sept. 17, but could be affected by bad weather during the remaining two weeks. The boats must travel over 45 minutes in the Caribbean Sea, which is not good when there is rain or high winds.
The licensees said that at the end of the holiday season the demand for service declines considerably, and that rain and winds can affect their work during these last days. One said, "For the past two years, we have been able to take advantage until the end of the season, but three years ago the season closed a week early for us because there was strong winds and constant rain."

Partial opening of the new hospital
Apertura parcial del nuevo hospitalp.. [+] Ver mas

The new Hospital de Segundo Nivel has opened its doors for emergencies, and will add other services gradually, said its Director Pedro Zapata Loya.  In upcoming days they will provide urgent outpatient consultations and emergency service, but at this time, the other services are not available at the hospital. He explained, "In the process of relocating from one place to the other, a great deal of furniture and equipment must be moved that will be needed at the new facility. People must understand that this is not easy, and much less so because we do not have specialized people to do these jobs."
He thanked the staff of the General Hospital for their help, saying without them so much would not have been possible in such a short time. Since Wednesday, the work of moving the furniture, equipment, and materials has intensified, so that on Sunday most of them were in place to begin operations on Monday. He said the move is not finished, and will continue on Monday. The Pharmacy and the cashier are operational. There has been no official opening date announced because it will depend on the Governor's schedule. It was initially thought that he would be able to be at the opening on Monday.

Martha Puc Laies is the new head of the Human Rights Commission in Isla Mujeres, who says she is committed to meeting the responsibilities of this agency and increasing its presence on the island. She does not have an office on the island and is seeking effective ways to serve the community. She took charge of the position three weeks ago, and should be officially appointed by the state Council president, Harley Sosa Guillen, in upcoming days. Among the outstanding cases she will attend to is the case of a middle school teacher who may have affected the rights of her students.
