Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 17 de febrero.-
The First National Health week is scheduled Feb. 21-27, when 850-900 doses of vaccines against polio will be given to children under 5 years old.  They will also complete the vaccinations of children between six and eight with vaccines like MMR, Diptheria, and others, as well as providing Vitamin "A" and albendazole (an antiparasitic).
This will involve coordination of staff from the General Hospital, the Naval Hospital, and the IMSS Mexican Social Security Institute to administer the doses to about 900 children in the kindergarten and elementary schools. There will be one module near the kindergarten "Enriqueta Camarillo and Roa" in the Salinas neighborhood, and one on the premises of the IMSS, behind the Municipal Market "Javier Rojo Gomez".
Staff will visit all the kindergartens to serve the children under five. The Naval Hospital and the General Hospital will focus on the children in the primary schools. It is expected that different modules will be placed at different locations around the island to serve the populace.

Geotube  'whales' are deflating
Aparecen geotubos enterrados [+] Ver mas
This article has similar information as the previous two articles on this subject regarding six breakwaters that are deflated & the nearby erosion occurring to North Beach, and a proposal to replace them..  It notes the 'dique' (lit. dam) that was built at the mouth of the malecon Rueda Medina almost half a century ago (or around the middle of the century?... que se construyó hace casi medio siglo)  has simply disappeared, and only traces appear of the rocks.

Lack of light at Punta Sur
En tinieblas rumbo a Punta Sur[+] Ver mas
There is a lack of lighting at the Punta Sur area at the south part of the island and a woman was frightened by a snake on a sidewalk, near the sewage treatment plant. The snake came in contact with her heel, and she was not harmed or bitten, but she was frightened. And employee of the plant, who witnessed the surprise, said a light should be installed and the foliage should be kept pruned back from the sidewalk.

Carnaval comes to an end
Llega a su fin el carnaval.. [+] Ver mas

Foreign residents enjoyed the last day of Carnaval and documented the participation by the troupes with photographs on the social networks in several places. Among photographers who often share their images is Tony Garcia, a descendent of an Island family who has a great deal of contact with tourists. The Americans & Canadians who spend the winter here did not pay much attention to the shortcomings of the organizers of the festival. The streets downtown and in the colonias were visited by the dancing troupes, and people shared albums in cyberspace of photographs taken on the beach areas.
During Carnaval, checkpoints were installed at the entrance and exit to downtown, and some people were detained for driving in an inappropriate state, especially young people, but there were no incidents and the festival closed with a 'saldo blanco'. The Tourist Police also participated in monitoring security during the events, and the cooperation of people was appreciated. Commitments were made among the organizers of the troupes to improve and to commit to participating next year with fewer errors, and with more participation by the youths.
Speaking of youths, the Municipal Agency for Women invites everyone to attend the event "A Billion United Standing Against Violence Against Women and Girls" being held on the town square Thursday, Feb 18, and you are asked to wear orange to show your support.

Foreigners planning fundraiser
Extranjeros recaudan donaciones [+] Ver mas
A group of foreign residents formed an association "Seniors & Friends of Isla" last year, with the aim of supporting institutions such as the Red Cross, the General Hospital, and the Senior Citizens Club. The organization started after friends needed a wheelchair and could not find one on Isla Mujeres, and they realized the level of need. So far they have donated nearly a dozen wheelchairs, and many crutches and walkers, as well as various medical supplies and equipment.
They are organizing a big fundraiser on February 28th at the Chuuk Kay restaurant, with a silent auction scheduled for 5:30pm. (Their FB page says 5p). Their goal is to raise money to purchase medical supplies and to continue providing donations for the benefit of the populace. There is a Facebook page, as well as a blog, that names companies who are committed to other worthy causes at this destination, including the care and protection of animals, and that promote the culture and traditions here. Many foreign residents are very engaged in living among the local people and they are friends. "They have been enchanted by the goddess Ixchel."
