En Isla Mujeres, pueblo y gobierno se encuentran listos para el disfrute de los colores, la alegría, la música, el baile y la diversión del espectacular “Carnaval Isla Mujeres 2015”. La fiesta de la carne, de ahí su nombre: …
Ready for Carnaval
In Isla Mujeres, the people and the government are ready to enjoy the colors, music, joy, dancing, and great fun of “Carnaval Isla Mujeres 2015”.The "feast of meat", La fiesta de la carne, hence its name: carnival, is a tradition on this small Caribbean island which is enjoyed by locals, visitors, and tourists from around the world. Carnival comes from the Latin words carne vale, meaning "farewell to the flesh"...carnal also means sensual, of the flesh...as in English..carnal knowledge.
Carnaval ends at midnight on Fat Tuesday. It is followed by Ash Wednesday, when meat was prohibited by the Catholic Church during the 40 days of Lent until Easter. Carnival is a sort of 'last hurrah' of partying before Lent. The Carnival 'king', Juan Carnaval, is burned on Tuesday evening, and his 'will' is read, which includes humorous mentions of politicians & local 'celebrities'.
The Celebration of the Rey Momo, as Carnaval is also known, is celebrated in many countries of the world, and will take place in Isla From Friday Feb. 13th to Tuesday Feb 17th. For weeks in advance the municipal government and members of the community have been preparing for this celebration that has among other objectives to provide a venue for funa and recreation for local families, while showing the world the best of the islanders and their unique traditions of fiestas.
The Carnaval schedule includes parades, performances, costumes & contests, dances, music, games, and other activities to liven up this popular festival. Carnaval of Isla Mujeres has a well deserved reputation of participation and organization and this year is no exception. There will be an extensive and varied schedule of activities for people to enjoy (gozar & vivir a lo grande...lit. enjoy & live large).
During the four days of the festival, at the Town Square and in different parts of the island, you can enjoy shows, parades, competitions, including music & dancing and regional dancing. The official program has been released by Ruben Perez Marin, municipal Director of Culture.
The rest of the article is the schedule, which I translated in the Events section below.

Some parents of students at the high school, Colegio Bachillees, are requesting information about the use of school fees. Some say that since they have no Parents Association, they should not pay fees (cuotas).
Parents are asking for accountability for the fees they pay, noting they see improvements on the campus that are paid for by municipal, state, and federal governments, but they do not know where the resources they contribute are spent.

It is Día de la Candelaria....time to eat tamales!
Why??
On Día de Reyes or King’s Day, (Jan. 6th, when kids receive gifts symbolizing gifts from the three Kings gifts to baby Jesus), friends & families share rosca cakes that have figurines hidden inside. If you aren't clever at palming your baby Jesus, you win the honor of serving tamales to those friends & family members today.
In Mexico, the Christmas holidays end today, and the nativity scenes are put away. The Jesus figures are dressed and taken to church for a blessing. It's the Day of the Presentation of Christ at the temple, because Feb. 2nd is 40 days after Christmas. Jewish law said that after 40 days, babies were to be taken to the temple, because women were considered to be unclean for forty days after giving birth. Mary took Jesus to the temple with candles...“Candelas”, hence the name “Candelaria”, and "Candlemas"
Pre-Hispanic Mexicans had also a ceremony in the beginning of February. Aztecs had the tradition of paying a tribute to their Rain God “Tlaloc” and the “Tlaloques”(clouds), to pray for rain for their agricultural activities. They dressed the children in fancy outfits, took them to the Tlaloc Hill, and encouraged them cry as an augury of water abundance. Since this tradition was related to children, it was probably relatively easy for Catholic priests to link it to their religious celebration.
Long before the arrival of the Spanish, Mexican natives, and people in the Meso-American region consumed tamales, especially in agricultural celebrations.
In some cultures, including Mexico, Candlemas was also believed to be a good day for weather forecasting (it falls halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox). If it is a sunny day, there would be forty more days of cold and snow. Happy Groundhog's Day! ~~WentCoastal/Ronda
