People negligently dump soapy water
Gente negligente vuelca agua y jabón[+] Ver mas
Some businesses are complaining about their neighbors who throw soapy water into the street at the northern end of Hidalgo. They want authorities to punish those who are responsible, because this not permitted according to regulations enforced by the Ecology Department. The water is near the tables and chairs of restaurants, which presents a bad image for tourist diners, and could affect the business's income. Hidalgo is known for having nightlife, and also has intense activity during the day by daytrippers. Businesses are allowed to use part of the street, which in the case of restaurants means putting tables and chairs in front.
It is a common practice to throw water in the street after mopping out the business and the sidewalk out front, and it is not the custom to use the storm drains or to have a drain installed on the premises. Those who are unhappy would like the municipal government to supervise each business in setting up its own system.

Dismantling of the tower continues

The dismantling of the scenic tower that began a few days ago is expected to be completed at the end of the month, unless the work is affected by winds that occur at this part of the island, that are common with the nortes/northern fronts at this time of year, said Mauricio Toledo Castillo, representative of the contractor.
Regarding the concerned neighbors, he said they communicated with all the neighbors and assured them that all safety measures will in taken in the work every day. The steel structure is about 100 feet tall and weighs just over 100 tonnes, and has suffered deterioration from exposure to the elements, especially the 'basket' (the part people rode in), which has already been removed. The 'antenna' that is several meters long was removed. Next they will cut the pipe system of the structure into pieces of about one square meter each, to avoid risk. All pieces will be transferred to a steel mill in the center of the country.
It is not known if there is any intention to install a new tower, however this one didn't work for most of the time since it was installed, and it ceased operations in 2005 after Hurricane Wilma, according to collected information.
Sr. Toledo said there is a daily assessment of the weather to assure it is safe, since the last thing they want is an accident that could affect residents, tourists, or the Garrafon park, that is located nearby. This tower is one of four that were installed around the same time along the northern coast of Quintana Roo. It is distinguished for being on high ground, about 20 meters above sea level. You could see for miles around, and there has been a communication system installed by the Mexican Navy a few years ago, taking advantage of the good location of the property.
