Leer más...The City Council unanimously approved a proposal to allow the City to obtain a revolving line of credit, which is similar to a credit card. This will allow the City to face any eventuality or contingency of municipal services or functions. The line of credit is available for use when necessary during the administration's term from 2013- 2016, and only has costs for the time used and for the amount of resources that are available.

Leer más...A section of Rueda Medina, the main street downtown, was closed for nearly 24 hours, between the taxi stand and Naval base, due to work being done on the new ferry terminal. The closure began at 6pm, and continued for nearly 24 hours, causing traffic congestion on Juarez Avenue and near the cemetery. The construction is expected to be completed in early 2014, and it is noted that a greater number of visitors are arriving daily.

Leer más...Improvements are being made to the Senior Citizens Park in La Gloria with resources from the Fondo de Aportaciones para el Fortalecimiento de los Municipios (Funds for Strengthening Municipalties). The work will include steel fencing, a gate, renovating the tables and benches, painting and repair of the bathrooms.
In his speech before initiating the work, the Mayor said the City Budget will be lower than before, but we will do more with less by conserving resources, streamlining spending, and not inflating the payroll. Improving the park is a response to requests made by residents during the dialogues with citizens held by the administration. Within the first hundred days in office, Agapito Magana continues working to benefit the inhabitants of the municipality.

Official notices have been placed at the marinas advising that sewage cannot be released in the Isla Mujeres area, and that is only allowed in international waters, which is "dozens of" miles from port. There are five marinas which are allowed to receive foreign vessels, out of 135 docks on the isle, and only one, Marina Puerto Isla Mujeres, has sewage reception facilities. (Previous articles have said Marina Paraiso also has sewage reception facilities.)
The reporter asked the Harbor Master about which officials were responsible for monitoring this environmental concern, and the response was there are multiple agencies which include the Port Authority (API), Sanidad Internacional (International Health/Sanitaryness), Profepa (Federal Environmental Agency), Armada de México (Navy), Ayuntamiento (City) and Organismos no Gubernamentales (NGO's-non governmental organizations).
It is noted that most yachts have modern recycling systems, that there are not enough staff to monitor all the boats, and that there are international treaties that require Mexico to comply with environmental rules about sewage in ports, where neglect can cause a health emergency, so there is a common agenda to prevent contamination.
The Harbor Master said they do what is humanly possible to address this issue, but there are many activities and countless boats passing through the area, both domestic and foreign.

Business leaders say they were not informed of the reasons for the discontinuation of the Isla Mujeres Tourism Promotion Agency, which is now combined with the agency in Cancun.They have written a letter to the governor, but have not gotten a response.

December is here, and we are collecting shoes and donations for our annual Christmas Party and shoe delivery. Last year every child that came for shoes walked away with a new pair for Christmas!
This is the one time of year we only collect new shoes in order to make each child feel extra special.
Not only do we distribute shoes, but we join with the local community to provide a meal and a small gift. It is a special event, as for some of the children, it will be their only Christmas gift. They are already looking forward to it on December 24th.

It's Día de Guadalupe...one of the most important holidays of the year in Mexico
According to accounts published in both Nahuatl and Spanish in the 1600s, the image of the Virgin Mary appeared to the indigenous peasant, Juan Diego, in the hills of Tepeyac in the outskirts of Mexico City on December 9, 1531, when Juan Diego was on his way to the city from his village. (Later she appeared to his sick uncle also.) The young woman was surrounded by light & spoke in Nahuatl, telling Juan Diego that a church should be built in her honor at the top of Tepeyac hill, where there had once been an Aztec Temple to the goddess Tonantzin.
But when Juan Diego related this to the Spanish archbishop, the cleric didn’t believe him and told Juan Diego to go back to Tepeyac and ask the Virgin for a miracle. The Virgin told Juan Diego to gather Castilian roses at the top of the hill. The Virgin helped arrange the flowers in Juan Diego’s tilmátli (a type of cloak), and he carried them back to Mexico City.
When he arrived on December 12 and opened his tilmátli in front of the archbishop, the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe had been imprinted on the tilmátli. The tilmátli with the imprint is still on display at the Basilica de Guadalupe, one of the most visited shrines in the world. (Edited from Source:Latinbayarea)
I wondered why she was called "Guadalulpe" ? (Most of the Virgins seem to be named for the place they appeared...Lourdes, Fatima, Caridad de Cobre. She IS also called the Virgen Morena del Tepeyac. Morena refers to her dark skin.)
Why would the Virgin Mary call herself "of Guadalupe", a Spanish name, while appearing to an indigenous person in recently conquered Mexico, and otherwise speaking to him in Nahuatl?
The origin of the name Guadalupe has always been a matter of controversy. It is nevertheless believed that the name came about because of the translation from Nahuatl to Spanish of the words used by the Virgin during the apparition to Juan Bernardino, the ailing uncle of Juan Diego.
It is believed that Our Lady used the Aztec Nahuatl word of coatlaxopeuh which is pronounced "quatlasupe" and sounds remarkably like the Spanish word Guadalupe. Coa meaning serpent, tla being the noun ending which can be interpreted as "the", while xopeuh means to crush or stamp out. So Our Lady must have called herself the one "who crushes the serpent." The Aztecs offered men, women and children in human sacrifice to their gods. One way of honoring Guadalupe is with a task of endurance, which can be in the from of walking or bicycling from a distant city, which Islenos have done in the past. The devotees try to arrive on her day, and place a flower and memento at her shrine. They are offering thanks, and may be seeking her help.
In Isla, there is an annual run from the downtown Catholic Church to the South Point, to the Chapel of Guadalupe (Capilla de Guadalupana). (In Salina Chica, on the coast, near Mango Cafe). She is also honored by singing of the Mananitas by devotees and Mariachis, in the evenings (11th & 12th). Hundreds of people participate. Whether there is a morning parade on the 12th, with horses usually, may depend on the weather. The "rodeo" stadium is set up, so there will probably be activities there this weekend.

are overwhelmed with gratitude at the generosity of one of our Isla
Mujeres artists, Mark Caffo of Caribe on Canvas. From December 1st to
the 8th all of the sales of Caribe on Canvas' 2014 Calendar were donated
to Isla Animals. This generated over $1800 (US) which will cover a
spay/neuter clinic or a vaccination clinic. We can not thank Mark
enough for his kindness. His donation will make a huge difference in
our community & so many locals' lives.
