Increasing mobile vendors
Vendedores
Aumentan ambulantes en las playas
0 13 de diciembre de 2013 This is another representation of the opinion of the business owners disliking competition from the mobile vendors, who pay a monthly fee of 500 pesos. It is noted that the number of mobile venders increases during high season and this has begun. It is noted that their overhead is lower than that of the stationary businesses. And that is Angela, who has been selling on the beach for over a decade., in low season and high. She is very polite and unintrusive when she tries to sell her jewelry.

Keeping their promises to Guadalupe
The 482nd anniversary of the appearance of the Virgen Morena del Tepeyac was celebrateed in Isla Mujeres, beginning on December 11th with a foot race to the Guadalupe Chapel, and the singing of the mananitas that followed, and the celebrations continued as many islanders came to the church to bow before her feet and give thanks for favors received. At noon on the 12th, the taxi union members arrived with banners and prayers. There was a procession to a party in La Gloria with food, smiles, and presents. Children were dressed as Juan Diego and as Maria, who were brought to the Chapel by their parents to participate in these traditions and celebrations honoring the Virgin of Guadalupe.

The current leader of the taxi union is seeking another term at the election which will be held today, Saturday, at 4pm. The candidates opposing him have filed a complaint with the local Board of Conciliation and Arbitration saying that it is against the rules for him to seek a third term. There are also allegations concerning misappropriations of funds, concerns about his wife being appointed as manager of finances, and the issue of taxi 'placas' or permits that had been designated for 'combi' shuttles which became permits for taxis..
It is noted that in the past nine years the number of placas/permits has grown from just over 200 to now there are nearly 800 placas/permits. There are plans for the Isla Mujeres taxi union to have a significant impact upon the continental zone.
The three opponents have agreed to abide by the status quo and respect the wishes of the group if one of them wins the election. There is an intention that the election on Saturday could be annulled and another specific assembly for an election in which they can participate without "Wato".

Classes have been normalized and holiday vacations will be normal, because the teachers of Isla Mujeres only participated in the strike briefly in September. The holiday will begin Thursday Dec. 19th when 4630 students in Isla Mujeres, at all educational levels, will begin their vacations, returning on Tuesday, January 7th. The preschool children total 585 students, primary is 2368, middle school is 979, and there are 692 high school students (bachilleratos). Growth is unprecedented on the mainland area of Isla Mujeres, and within two years it is estimated their numbers will be greater than on the island.
Regarding the fall in student achievement at the middle school, the director of Education, Rocio Rodriguez Herrera said they are limited as to what they can do in the classroom if there is not support from the parents at home, noting it takes a healthy family environment for students to achieve grades of 8-9 points, and an ongoing communication between school and home is essential.
Island hoteliers in financial crisis

Formerly the family hotels which has 10 or 20 or 30 rooms were fully occupied during holiday seasons, but now they are not even reaching 50 percent occupancy during high season. One problem is a lack of remodeling, another is competition from vacation homes owned by foreigners. This competition is considered unfair, and has not been addressed by authorities. Some hotels have had to lower their prices to attract clients, and even then for most of the year their buildings are partially empty, while the big hotels report high occupancy even in the low months because they have capital to invest in promotions.
Not all the small hotels are reporting good reservations for Christmas and New Years, but they are hoping to sell their remaining rooms in the upcoming days. On Friday, Por Esto reported there are nearly 20 small hotels that are interested in forming an association to work together to seek alternatives to reverse the lower occupancy rates of the recent years. There was a first meeting on this topic on November 30 at the Bahia Chacchi, which was attended by 17 representatives of the small hotels. They listened attentively to a Tourism representative from the United Nations Organization, Dr Armando de Lucas Hurtado who spoke about helping small businesses in the hotel industry amid this globalized economy.
Expectations are high for this proposal, so in the following meetings it is expected that the small business owners will make agreements and reverse the downward trend in occupancy

Youths honor Guadalupe

Hundreds of children joined the celebrations of the anniversary of the appearance of the Virgin of Guadalupe 482 years ago, in the four parishes of Isla Mujeres. On the opening minutes of Thursday, the faithful were singing the mananitas, and vehicular traffic was semi paralyzed by the processions throughout the day, and there were traditional celebrations at the municipal market, for example. Various groups including gremios of businesses and social organizations had honored the Virgin with gratitude and promises, while the priests reminded the youths that this was a day of reflection and a time to change behaviors. Before the festivities were over on Wednesday night, rain began to fall at 10pm. The police said everything was clam and there were no irregularities during the festivities. There were some tourists who were annoyed by the bank closures, but the City continued working.

El Comité de Ciudadanos y Defensa Animal, a civil group, met Friday at Mundaca to talk about the need to raise awareness about the state and local laws protecting animals. Ley de Protección y Bienestar Animal, Código Penal estatal y Reglamento de Justicia Cívico del municipio de Isla Mujeres.
They have been working for over a year and have a poster campaign that will be exhibited in upcoming weeks in public buildings. Private support is requested to help display the posters for this campaign. These efforts also involve two municipal departments: la Dirección de Ecología, (dept of Ecology), Seguridad Pública (police), in addition to the NGO's.
Acts of cruelty include leaving an animal in the sun or rain, failure to give them food or water, and failure to bathe them or seek medical care when they are ill. There are also sanctions for people who intentionally abandon their pets, for those who fail to give normal care, and for indiscriminate reproduction, as well as sales of pets without proper permits. There are penalties for hitting animals, causing fights, or other actions that cause physical harm, as well as walking a dog without a collar, leash or registration tag, and for not cleaning up the dogs excrement. This includes neglect or abuse of any animals, including iguanas, dogs, cats, crabs, birds, among others. There are penalties for people whose pets cause damage or inconvenience to third parties, and they are also responsible for covering those expenses. There are penalties for people who let their dogs walk freely in the streets or public places.

ZAPATOS PARA LOS NINOS Shoes for the Children Annual Christmas Party and Shoe Drive
December is here, and we are collecting shoes and donations for our annual Christmas Party and shoe delivery. Last year every child that came for shoes walked away with a new pair for Christmas!
This is the one time of year we only collect new shoes in order to make each child feel extra special.
Not only do we distribute shoes, but we join with the local community to provide a meal and a small gift. It is a special event, as for some of the children, it will be their only Christmas gift. They are already looking forward to it on December 24th.
If you would like to donate shoes, please contact Greg Snider at: bullridersnider@yahoo.com
If you would like to contribute monies so we can purchase shoes, food, or small toys, please also contact Greg at the email address above or go to our website for Pay Pal http://www.islazapatos.blogspot.mx/ We will happily send you photos of the children who receive your gifts. Greg and Natalie
