Leer más...I already translated this interview with Capt Rogelio Delgado, of the Lili M & the Keen M International company. (It accompanied a photo of many fish laid out on a pier, presumably bait fish for sail fishing). The sailfish are caught and released, boats have been going out since Saturday Nov. 28th, but this captain has his first trip tomorrow, Dec 31. It is a popular activity with people from the US, Europe, and all corners of the world. The sailfish are found 14 to 40 miles northeast of Isla Mujeres, and this activity has been offered for about a decade, and is aimed at affluent tourists.

Leer más...The staff of the municipal DIF, social services agency, (del Sistema Municipal para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia) is selling tables for the New Years Eve celebrations for 1000 pesos, which seat ten and include a bottle of cider, snacks, commemorative items, and New Year's items. The money will go to the DIF, and they are selling from a desk in front of the Municipal Palace. The public is invited to attend the free event. (Note: Gail Marie Stewart reports the tables were sold out this morning.)

Leer más...This event on Friday night was successful, with the Mass at the church on the town square, Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, and the dance at the Taxi union's social hall in La Gloria. The Ball lasted for a couple hours, and was well attended. This was a very special night for the young ladies who turned 15 this year, and also unites the Catholics in their traditions, while raising funds for the Church of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception.

Leer más...A pamphlet was distributed seeking support from the Catholic community to prevent an alleged removal or change in duties of the priest Jesus Martinez Penilla, due to his advanced age. He recently celebrated 50 years of parish service. After the eight o'clock Mass, he said he did not have anything to do with the pamphlet, and doesn't know anything about it. At the Mass he asked that people do not get carried away by unfounded comments. He said he is a servant of God, and puts himself in God's hands. He said he is not aware of any changes in roles at the parish.

During the Christmas Eve celebrations, only three people were arrested for administrative offenses, in contrast to last year during the same period when more than two dozen were arrested, and there was an unfortunate accident that resulted in the deaths of two young men on a motorcycle. Of the three arrested for disorderly conduct yesterday., two were in a fight outside their home, and the other was a report for disturbing the peace at home. Today of the two people arrested, one was for sleeping in the street, and the other was for disturbing the peace at home while intoxicated. More activity is expected on New Years Eve and in the early hours of January first, when there will be more officers at the checkpoints and surveillance will be increased.

Leer más...At 11:30am there was an accident between taxi 106, driven by Germán Gómez Velasco, 26, when a scooter was southbound on Jesus Martinez Ross Avenue, driven by Yesmani Antonio Belganza Quiñones. Her passenger, María Saylani Belganza Quiñones 18, suffered a serious injury to her right foot and was taken to the General Hospital. The scooter driver suffered only minor injuries. The taxi driver was at fault, and his insurance is paying for the damage to both vehicles and the medical expenses. The taxi and scooter were taken to the police impound yard, and agreements were made for the taxi's insurance to be responsible.

Por Carlos Gasca-Quequi .-Hotel occupancy remains above 60 percent, and tourism arrivals appear to be less than previous years. Many people who visit return to Cancun on the same day. The car ferry suspended its first crossing of the day, with the first departure now at 8am from Isla Mujeres to Punta Sam, and on Sundays they have added an extra crossing. If demand increases, they will add more crossings. The beaches, ferries, and streets appeared busy to me, this weekend.

Throngs of visitors downtown & at the beaches
There is a good influx of tourists to the island, both national and international, with rivers of people crowding the streets, businesses, and beaches during the peak hours. There have been no incidents during the holiday period, except a small traffic accident, with no tragedy. The number of visitors arriving for tours in boats and catamarans is exceeding 2000 daily. (The total number of people arriving to Isla Mujeres in 2012 was over 1.5 million, with over 100,000 arrivals monthly.)

At Garrafon Park, over a month ago, the company broke a public sidewalk to install a pipe and has not repaired this hazard to tourists and employees, which is located near the employee entrance. They have put a red cone near the area, and people are complaining to the reporter that authorities should pressure the company to repair the sidewalk.

Priest Jesus Martinez will continue to hold Masses in his parish, and in the others when deemed necessary, but due to his age he had already asked the Bishop Pedro Pablo for a reduction in activities.
Father Raul spoke about his work and plans to develop the parish of Sacred Heart in coordination with other sectors of the community and local authorities, without partisan-ness, to address issues like addiction and treatment in young people, to expand medical care to needy people and addicts, and to provide therapy for addicts and families to reintegrate these people into the community leading useful lives.
He also spoke about the need for the church with changing times and technology affecting families by minimizing the role of parents, because of the great influence of new communication systems. He said therefore it is important to focus on biblical passages and stories that warn children that they should respect their parents, and husband and wives should respect each other, in order to live as a healthy family.

Four members of the distinguished Magaña Carrillo family died in 2013, who have been influential in recent decades in the economic and political life of Isla Mujeres, including the first mayor of the island Ariel "Picho" Magana. The first to die was Don Alvaro Magana, businessman, at age 82, and next was the former mayor died on April 29th in Merida, after suffering a long illness with several ailments, including diabetes. Don Romeo Magaña Carrillo, died at age 85 at his home in Merida on the 23rd of October and don Raúl Magaña, 79, passed away on Saturday, December 21st, after a long illness. Their father was Ausencio Magaña, who was influential in economic and political development in Isla Mujeres, and who passed away 23 years ago.
Romeo and Ariel were lovers of baseball and had three teams in the Mexican League, as well as promoting the sport on a local and regional level. "Picho" was the politician in the family, and managed the family ferry business, and played a role in most aspects of municipal government. It was common to see Don Ariel engaging in conversation in the cafes on whatever was the issue of the moment in politics, baseball, and the old stories of the island, including life here when growing up. The other brothers were less public people, who preferred dialogues in private with people, in their homes or offices, or in the case of don Romeo, at the dock or on the boat with don Raul, or in his store or businesses with don Alvaro, may they rest in peace.
Their absence left a great void on the island. In the churches they are remembered and their names frequently appear on the lists of souls that are prayed for by parishioners.

There are hoteliers and restauranteurs who disagree with the official figures about 90% occupancy, saying that the small hotels downtown are averaging around 50% occupancy, noting that many people come for a few hours and then return to Cancun, and do not stay overnight. Demand for golf carts has been so high that some rental agencies are left without a single unit.
On Saturday, reporter observed that there were many tourists shopping and going to the beach, which included both domestic and international tourists, and local islander families were also enjoying the beach.
The rentals of lounge chairs near the main hotels were the busiest/ This confirms the opinion of entrepreneurs who say it is the large hotels with large resources to promote themselves that are operating at 90 percent, while others do not reach 50 percent, and the luckiest are around 80 percent. An owner of a small vacation rental center said the statistics given by the city government do not reflect reality of many hoteliers.

It is feared that these price increases will complicate the lives and health of workers and their families. With rising costs of basic foods, there is concern over malnutrition in children and older members of society, who may be forced to consume foods of lower nutritional value.
Dona Dora Echeverria, spouse of a veteran seaman, said her husband's job situation is not good, and bad weather prevents daily work, so having enough money to put food on the table is not easy. This will become harder with the new year, when more prices will increase.
Around Christmas, it was announced that costs of food and refreshments could rise by 15 to 18 percent. The VAT or Value Added Tax will increase in this area from 11 percent to 16 percent on January 1st, which has raised concerns among suppliers, who have decided to raise prices. A representative of a department store chain (probably Chedraui), Leandro Hernandez, said the increasing shipping costs to the island are not represented in their prices which are the same as those in their mainland stores, and said tho he is not authorized to elaborate, price increases are expected to occur in January.
CROC union leader Maldonado Euan said, "According to the Constitution of the United Mexican States, the General Minimum Wage should be sufficient to meet the material, cultural, and social needs of the household and to provide for the compulsory education of their children. Do you think with this salary increase (of 2.39 pesos daily) that we can attain all this?"

The reporter spoke to several retailers who agreed that increases will range between 10 and 18 percent, on the average. They have been given ample warning by their wholesale suppliers that prices are increasing, and that prices of soft drinks would increase at Christmas. The cost of carbonated drinks rose 17-18%, bringing the price of two liters of cola to 27 pesos. A representative of "la linea de pan industrializado" a bread manufacturer (probably Bimbo) said their prices are rising, "Similar to the drink prices".
A consumer noted these price increases wipe out the measly increase in the daily minimum wage that takes place in January. A union leader said increasing the workers wages by the equivalent of one sixth of the price of a soda is criminal. (The minimum daily wage increase is 2.39 pesos, and I think he is talking about the cost of a single serving bottle of soda since 2.39 x 6 is ~ 14.)
An announcement of an increase in ferry prices is expected during the first weeks of next year, due to the continual, gradual increases in fuel prices that occurred throughout 2013.

Hotels are reporting occupancies above 90 percent and merchants are enjoying good sales. There are vacancies at the hotels of one, two, and three stars, according to representatives of that industry.
Public Safety (police) and Civil Protection (lifeguards & firemen) reported there were no incidents (saldo blanco). Hangovers from the Christmas parties did not generate much absenteeism, and banks and municipal offices reopened on schedule.
The authorities are asking the ferry companies and hotels to inform their clients about the areas of recreation in this location to facilitate their use, because the roads are saturated with vehicles such as taxis and golf carts and private vehicles at the times when visitors are departing and arriving. The areas of greatest conflict are at the street by the ferry arrival and departure point, because of the ferry terminal being under construction. There are regular interruptions in traffic on the bay side street (the southbound lane of Rueda Medina, just south of the taxi siteo) while the concrete mixer truck deposits cement for the steel supports. (I'm not sure what hoteliers are supposed to advise clients to avoid that downtown traffic jam, because Rueda Medina/ Main Street is the only street you can use to depart downtown. You could try to avoid departing downtown very often, and avoid departing downtown when the ferry is arriving. There is no alternate route to suggest if you are leaving downtown and going to the rest of the island.)
