Cloudy Weather Slows Tourism
Manuel Valdez/Diario Q Roo reports that the with skies that are often cloudy, following last weeks rains, have been bad for tourism. The weather was hot, but there were threats of rain and wind, which discouraged tourists from taking boat tours. There were tourists arriving, mostly for the day, and touristic services were operating at less that 30 percent.
Catholic Procession In Streets
- As part of the culmination of the celebrations of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in La Gloria, around 38 children celebrated their First Communion on Friday night. There was a grand procession from the church with the parish's image, in celebration of their Santo Patrono, which wound through the streets of La Gloria, uniting with a cabalgata from both the mainland and the island. The procession ended at 7pm, and was followed by the Communion Mass, the then there was a regional Festival, and the night ended with fireworks. On Sunday at 10am there will be a confirmation of catholic faith before the Monsignor Pedro Pablo Elizondo. Source: Diario Q Roo/Manuel Valdez A Calbalgata is a procession of horses.
Fishermen At Work
Commercial fishermen were able to resume operations on Thursday, and during this weekend, after five days off word due to weather. FIsherman Jose Roberto complained that he only caught 5 kilos of fish after spending several hours at sea. When asked what species he was catching, he replied, "El jurel, el pargo y coronado. (Mackerel, snapper, and coronado) He said he would be keeping some of them for his own use, because sales remain low. The fishermen expect their economic situation to improve when lobster season begins July 1st. Source: Por Esto
Tourism Improves After Rains
Por Esto reports the occupancy rate remained at 40%, and business owners are confident that it will improve after July 21st, with the onset of summer holidays. The hotel association, HIM, said the summer season looks good for many of their members. They allocate money annually for promotion and participate in tourism & travel fairs in Mexico, and in foreign countries. The reporter toured the streets of Isla Mujeres and noted that domestic tourism has increased, and that there were people taking advantage of the sunshine and working on their tans. Some restaurants had closed for three days during the rain, and were now experiencing a good influx of diners.
