IM Noticias reports: Distribution of 16 tons of cement has begun, which is being provided at a very low cost to families of Isla Mujeres who want to improve their homes, or start new construction. The CROC union is working with the Maiana Trinitana Association, providing the bags of cement for 160 pesos, when they normally retail for about 260 pesos each. The union leader said they have also offered community support with programs supplying school supplies, and low cost tinacas (water tanks) and milk. Union leader, Roman Maldonado Euan encouraged citizens to come to the union facility to benefit from these programs and learn more about them. He listed the documents that they should bring with them. LINK
IM Noticias reports the Navy removed palms from the section of Rueda Medina by the naval base to prevent them from falling on pedestrians. They also installed several trash bins for visitors to use who frequent the area.
It is noted that during the recent Easter holiday period, Naval staff were sweeping the beach area daily, and removing trash and weeds from the shore area facing the Bay. LINK

Here is an article about the US invasion of Veracruz on April 21st, 1914.
The commemoration event took place at the Naval base in Isla Mujeres to honor the heroes of Veracruz, who included ordinary civilians and young military cadets, "who opposed the invading troops to preserve national sovereignty." Local Naval personnel served as an honor guard at the obelisk on Rueda Medina avenue which commemorates their actions, and a wreath was placed in their honor.

Saturday morning a large amount of seaweed washed up on the north side of Playa Norte (near Na Balam). On a daily basis, the two beaches of Isla Mujeres, Playa Centro and North Beach, are groomed and kept in good condition by personnel with ZOFEMAT, to preserve the flags they have earned. They seek to keep the beaches free of seaweed and remove it in a timely manner to avoid saturation, which happens in other destinations. However, due to the orientation of the island, the seaweed doesn't arrive as massively here, and the small amounts are raked and removed by the municipal workers and employees of the businesses that own concessions along these beaches.
For some of the concessionaires, this morning's seaweed represented the largest amount so far this year, including those located near the islet of El Yunque, where the 400 linear meters of "Playa Riito" and North Beach were inundated.
Before 10am, employees of the concessionaires in that area were taking charge of removing the large quantity of seaweed, since the ZOFEMAT workers had not yet appeared. Generally, the custom is to bury the seaweed, without having to move it to the Trash Transfer facility with vehicles, as has been done sometimes in the past.

The Director of Tourism, Jose Castillo, said that following the successful participation by Isla Mujeres in the Tourism Tianguis at Mazatlan, Sinaloa, there is a plan to purchase advertising in national airline magazines to improve occupancy in the summer season. He said they hope to attract visitors with greater purchasing power to this destination by advertising in the magazines of Aeroméxico, Interjet and Volaris airlines.
This represents a potential impact on millions of people, since the three airlines transported about 20 million people in 2017, according to their annual reports. They are maintaining constant growth providing service within Mexico.
He also noted that the two hotel associations that participated in the convention made contact with wholesalers from the Middle East and from South America who are interested in Isla Mujeres as an attractive beach vacation destination.
The next commitment of the Tourism Department is the Pueblos Magicos Fair in Morelia, Michoacan, on October 12-15, when they will be promoting the winter tourism season, according to Mr. Castillo.

Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Sunday, April 22 Earth Day Action for Isla is having their third annual cleanup event. The past two years divers and snorkelers cleaned under the downtown piers, and groups picked up trash along the Caribbean beaches.

For the third year in a row, Action for Isla is happy to announce that we will be hosting our big Earth Day Clean-up, to bring awareness of this problem to our residents, and unite our community to work towards Ending Plastic Pollution. We will be tackling the waste build up on both land and sea with an in-water Dive Against Debris and simultaneous beach clean up!
🌎In 2016, 62 volunteers got together to remove 650kgs of waste from our beaches and seas, last year both numbers grew
with 148 people collecting and sorting a whopping 1,090kgs of trash!!
This year we hope to go even bigger! And we need your help!
