Whale shark licensees concerned that permits won't be issued
Preocupación entre balleneros
Por permisos que no serán expedidos

ISLA MUJERES, 8 de junio.-
ISLA MUJERES, 8 de junio.-
There are whale shark tour operators who are very concerned that no more permits will be issued for this 2017 season. Yesterday the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) in Cancun confirmed their intention to reduce the number of permits, which were 301 boats last season. Francisco Ricardo Gómez Lozano, the CONANP regional director for the Yucatan and Mexican Caribbean, said in April more than 300 applications were received for whale shark tour permits and as of a few days ago, 230 authorizations have been given. He said they are considering increasing the number to 240, but will not be returning to 301 permits.
This generated dozens of comments in response, questioning the policies used to assign these permits which were questioned because, according to the information presented at the meeting between the workers and the authorities, it was revealed that there are permit holders who requested ten permits, and only one was refused and nine were issued. Meanwhile there are others who say they are the most affected because they have two or three boats, and only received one permit. A few days ago members of the Isla Mujeres nautical community went to the CONANP offices to seek a solution to the denial of their permits, many of which remain under review, according to reports.
According to CONANP, part of the policy used to assign permits included giving priority to the cooperatives, but this doesn't seem to have occurred because several permits of this type have also not arrived for those groups.

Muerte de ballena piloto fue natural. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
The pilot whale which was stranded in the vicinity of the Dreams hotel at Punta Sam on Tuesday appears to have died of natural causes, according to preliminary findings by (SEMARNAT), Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. The animal was in a state of decay, and was towed several miles north of Isla Mujeres to be sunk.
This species (Globicephala), has protected status and are of the genus of odontocete cetaceans of the family Delphinidae (ocean dolphins), with two species common whale/caldera (Globicephala melas) and the tropical whale/caldera (Globicephala macrorhynchus).
Comparison of their skulls is the only way to differentiate them with certainty. Their distribution is almost global with the common pilot whale living in temperate and sub-arctic waters, while the tropical pilot whale, is found mainly in the tropics and subtropics." There are records of their massive strandings and pilot whales are one of cetaceans that does it with more frequency.
Internationally, the conservation status of both pilot whale species has not been determined with certainty and both species are object of direct hunting and incidental capture, and in some countries they are the target of the whalers, according to several sources consulted online.

I'll probably translate this manana...but basically it's the same story about the sand extending the Posada beach (Playa Centro) out to the buoy line, and affecting in the nearby navigation area, until the winds changed, and then caused that accumulated sand to move toward Playa Norte and fill in the erosion there...so now you can walk around that corner between the Posada beach and Playa Norte.
Speed bump in front of Naval base 'disappeared'
Se “esfumó” el tope frente a la Quinta Región NavalVer masFull article at this link
Less than 24 hours after it was installed, the new speed bump in front of the Naval base was removed in response to complaints from residents. The 'turtle' type speed bump was installed by the Traffic Department just before noon on Wednesday, and social networks were quickly flooded with complaints, which were echoed in the mass media, resulting in its removal.
Taxi drivers gave warnings about the risks to tourists using motorcycles and bicycles and going thru that area by the "turtles". They say this type of speed bump is not appropriate for this type street, which has a high level of traffic during the day, especially during peak hours when there are more than 700 golf carts and hundreds of motorcycles, scooters, and bicycles being driven. This morning it was gone, to the relief of many people.
Some drivers support the installation of a pedestrian crossing at that point. on both sides of the street, to ensure that military, local people and tourists can cross. It is not clear if the municipal authority is considering it as an option after this.

Removing trash
Basura para rato. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
The Trash Transfer Facility is expected to be cleared out by the end of the year, which is a year later than expected, due to complications outside the current administration, according to José Ríos, the Director of Public services. He said one of these circumstances has to do with the Isla Mujeres car ferry which doesn't have enough space for two big trash trucks to cross at the same time, and this has prevented them from being able to reduce a huge volume of trash that was inherited. There is also an issue with space at the mainland landfill where the trash is deposited.
The official said there are about 8000 tons of accumulated trash, rather than the 2000 initially estimated. This is due to the condition of the land where the wastes were stagnant for several years. They will continue working daily to clean out the facility.
Regarding the equipment, two of the trash collection trucks were broken down. and one is now ready to go, and a ten ton truck is still out of service. He said they are collecting trash in the colonias and downtown with five routes daily to ensure that trash is removed from the streets and that the island has a good image.
Regarding the more than 200 square meters of organic trash that are buried in one area of the facility, a machine is needed to chop this into compost to use to fertilize public landscaping and private properties.
