50 people want action on fraud complaint

De más de 50 personas contra acusada de fraude

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 11 de abril.-
A group of more than 50 people allege they were defrauded, and filed a complaint against  Fátima Heredia González.  They are unhappy because they say she could be released on bond on Monday.. Members of the group met with the judge who explained that the case was filed as a single complaint and not as fifty complaints. He also said he is only authorized to discuss the case with those who are directly involved. The amount of the bond has not been reported, and the complainants estimate that it could be around 70,000 pesos.

Resources depleted: Families of missing fishermen ask community for help to continue the search

Familiares de pescadores piden ayuda de la sociedad para continuar con la búsqueda

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 11 de abril.-
On Sunday night, relatives of the missing fishermen reported that funds for the search have been depleted, and it is urgent that the groups giving assistance be reactivated and encourage people to continue to give support.
The wife of one of the missing fishermen said with each passing night they wonder if the young men have given up hope of being found.. "I wonder if they still believe that their families, friends, and the islanders are still doing their best to find them?"  She said the funds ran out after having raised $21.000, of which 19,000 dollars were available after taxes were paid. It seemed like a large amount to exhaust, but after renting at least two planes daily, paying for fuel and food, among other costs involved with the search, they have reached 'the red'.
She said, however, the wives and children will not let this cause them to lose hope that the men are coming home. She explained that they have gone through 11 days of anguish, eleven days when the children have not heard words of scolding nor of love, when the wives have been without their love, eleven days when islanders and foreigners have been united by a single cause. She said, "We, the wives, children, and friends are asking you not to abandon this cause; to continue to support the search; one day at a time."
She said, "Who are we to give up these hopes? Why abandon them? We ask with anguish, pain, and frustration, but also with a great deal of faith; we believe in this and believe they will be back home again. Please help and share this. We need help for the search, and for the families of the fishermen who are out searching for the Anastacia."  Money is being collected directly at the Patria & Progreso cooperative by the wives, and everyone's help is requested.
One of the family members said, "We are reaching out to all social groups; to all who want to help collect; to join in this mission to find the Anastacia and her crew. All of the families are hoping for a small gesture; do not abandon them."

Hoteliers who are on the Pueblos Magicos Committee continue to complain about noise pollution downtown. They are particularly unhappy regarding a permit that was granted to allow music on the eastern Malecon boardwalk, which they say has caused guests to leave their hotels and other hotels.

State Governor joins search efforts
Gobierno del Estado se une a las acciones de búsquedaVer mas Full article and photo here
Almost two weeks after contact was lost with the five crew members of the boat "Anastacia", the search continues relentlessly for the fishermen, now with support from the State government who joined in with a helicopter to fly over southern Quintana Roo. This was announced by Jaime Osario Sanchez, a coordinator in this work who said the helicopter left Playa del Carmen on Monday morning with two fishermen on board from the Patria & Progreso cooperative; “Archie” Bardales, (who also had been a passenger aboard the Mexican Navy's Persuader plane) and “Cheche” Burgos. They were accompanied by the municipal Secretary General, José Castillo Magaña.
Also working on the search is Marcelo Cupul and his son, who flew a second search in their bimotor plane,  searching in the same areas as the boats of the Patria & Progreso cooperative and of the fishing cooperatives of the southern coast of Quintana Roo, assisting their fellow fishermen. Sr. Osario Sanchez asked the people of Isla Mujeres to not abandon them in this struggle which began practically at the moment that communication was lost with the crew of the Anastacia. He asked the the families not be forgotten, who have not moved from the Patria & Progreso cooperative since the first day of the search, and continue to await good news.
He said, "For the families, not being left alone shows a great deal of moral support; when people of the island come by for just a few minutes, to inquire and offer encouragement, as well as for those of us who are manning the stations; the moral support gives us the energy to continue the struggle when we do not know how much longer it will continue."
Regarding the routes of the boats seeking the Anastasia at sea, he said they combed the entire areas south of Quintana Roo to the border of Belize, with efforts so intense that often the fishermen have not had time to bath, let alone take a brief rest.

Pair of visiting thieves arrested and a man with probable drugs

In two separate incidents, local police arrested two men who stole a backpack full of merchandise from a humble vendor, and, following an anonymous tip, they arrested a man suspected of selling drugs, who possessed  three small baggies of white powder that appeared to be  cocaine.
In the first incident, the two men who were arrested and placed in the municipal jail both live in Cancun. They are  Floriberto Puc Cohuó, 42, originally from Chetumal, who works for the company Turicun, and  Demesio Aguirre Aguirre, 54, and a fisherman who is originally from Veracruz. This pair of (alleged) thieves came to Isla Mujeres as part of a family to spend  Sunday on the island. They left the beach around 7pm and went to a place selling hand crafted souvenirs, which is located in the vicinity of Adolfo Lopez Mateos, where they saw the backpack and realized it would be easy to take, due to an oversight by the vendor.
The backpack contained hand crafted key rings, purses, bracelets, necklaces, rings, and other items with an estimated value of 2000 pesos. Moments after the robbery, the vendor realized what had happened and ran after the family, but they were no longer in sight. The seller requested and obtained assistance from a municipal police patrol, and they combed the area, without success.
The merchant went to the ferry terminal, and there he found Floriberto and Demesio, with the rest of the family, calmly waiting to ride the Ultramar ferry back to Cancun. The merchant ran and got the police patrol, who fortunately were still nearby, and the officers arrived at the terminal before the accused thieves had boarded the ferry and departed.
In the second incident, an anonymous tip led the police to arrest  Cristian Sebastián Pérez Medina, 25, who is a fishermen originally from Cancun who lives in Isla Mujeres. He was arrested because a tip said he was selling drugs in front of the cantina "The Old Man and The Sea" ( El Viejo y el Mar.), which is just a few hundred meters from the Police station. Moments after the tip, officers found him near the store that sells plumbing and electrical supplies, with three little baggies in his pocket containing white powder resembling cocaine.

This article is about frustrations among the complainants in the fraud case who are exploring their legal alternatives. It has advice from a lawyer to file in a timely manner to avoid problems with expiration dates, noting that there is a three year deadline, but that luxury items can be seized as assets from the accused if they are convicted.

Searching tirelessly for missing fishermen

Friends and family continue to wait for news at the Patria & Progreso cooperative, where don Fernando de la O Pino is the only official spokesperson. They understand that they should only believe what he tells them; ignoring rumors and "information" that surfaces on the internet, which are completely unfounded and only contribute to the distress and annoyance of those who barely moved from the base of operations, where people eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner without leaving, hoping for some valid news.
The Mexican Navy has requested help from Cuba and from the United States to search for the five man crew of the "Anastacia" in the territorial waters of those countries. Infantry with the Navy have searched on land for any signs of their whereabouts.
Seamen from both Isla Mujeres and Majahual have participated in the search by sea while those at the Patria & Progreso cooperative have been working hard to rent a helicopter to comb the area near the Bahia del Espiritu Santo, because the possibility has not been discarded that they could have reached that area.
Although the international protocol of searching for 92 hours has passed, the Navy of Mexico, via the Fifth Naval Region, continues to with the plan for search and rescue; to find the crew of the Anastacia.
Permission was given for a family member to be on board the "Persuaderal" type plane, which conducted a search pattern to 100 nautical miles (180 kilometers) to the north of the Yucatan Peninsula, but they were unable to locate the missing men: Jorge Fernando de la O. Avalos, Alfonso Jiménez Torres, Humberto Constantino Ordaz, Russel Pech Ceme and Marco Antonio Bardales Pastrana.
The Navy has also put the Naval sailboat "Cuauhtemoc" on alert to search, during its route between Colombia and Havana, and to offer assistance to the fishermen if they are spotted.
The Fifth Naval Region, via the Secretary of the Navy of Mexico, has requested that the countries of Cuba and of the United States assist with the search in their territorial waters, and thus the Navy continues to respond to requests by the relative of the crew of the Anastacia.
Meanwhile, military personnel continue to search on land in the northern part of  Quintana Roo and of the Yucatan Peninsula, looking for clues to help locate the missing fishermen or signs of their boat. Recently the Navy reported that they had done a patterned search 180 nautical miles (333 kilometers) into the center of the Gulf of Mexico, without positive results.
