-It is sunny with blue skies & scattered clouds this morn & a nice breeze off the ocean with a few whitecaps. The whale shark fleet headed out. Night before last, the wind switched & came from the north, which was refreshing, & we got some rain yesterday morning, which made the afternoon a lil steamy. When the breeze picked up yesterday evening, it was appreciated. At noon, there's thunder & rain approaching. Sunny again at 3p as I sign off ~wc

ISLA MUJERES, 9 de agosto.- The leaflets will be delivered to the residents and contain information about what to do before, during, and after a hurricane. Islanders have a strong tradition of familiarity with these weather events. The article notes that the hurricane shelter near the Garrafon park requires maintenance, and the financial resources are not available, but there are three hurricane shelters available. They are considered temporary shelters, because families usually stay with their relatives and friends after a hurricane. The director of Civil Protection said they can count on the facilities of the SUTSAIM union where if help from the Red Cross is needed, they are a few meters apart. And with the primary school "Julio Sauri" and the Community Center, residents can count on bathrooms, kitchen facilities, and other services in these shelters which can contain up to 300 people.

Progress on the Ferry Terminal
The Port Authority began dismantling the old terminal, and the new one is over 25 % complete. The shops in the terminal will be closed as of August 10, because demolition is beginning on the old building. Yesterday they began dismantling an area providing shade and a small snack bar. The activities will not disturb the flow of tourists. This is a federally funded project through the SCT (Ministry of Communications & Transport) at a cost slightly over 30 million pesos.

Excessive charges for electric service
COBROS EXCESIVOS POR EL SERVICIO DE LUZ
Resident Víctor Martínez López, called the reporter to complain that his electric bill had increased by 200 percent from 126 pesos to 346 pesos. He thinks this is incorrect because his house has a refrigerator and a TV, and they have not acquired any new appliances. He says he works as a gardener at a hotel and his salary is not enough to pay for this & he considers it an abuse by the Electric Commission. (Electric bills are for two months. His increased from about ten dollars to about $29.)

Little benefit from summer vacationers
Juan Carrillo Figueroa, the president of the Chamber of Commerce (CANACO) says the number of tourists has begun to increase with the arrival of foreign tourists, and he estimated that hotel occupancy is at about 70%. He said the sports fishermen who arrive with their own boats have helped the season. He noted that many come from North Carolina and Texas, as well as some from Chile and Argentina. He expects occupancy to remain stable and to increase to 80% by the end of the month. He said there are many Mexican tourists who stay in Cancun hotels and visit on the weekends, with less economic benefit to the island. He said domestic tourists prefer to stay where there are shopping centers, clubs, theaters, and other services not offered in Isla Mujeres. He said the best season for the municipality is in December. He said Isla Mujeres is known as a place where people go to enjoy the beach, and this has been one of the strongest seasons we have had, but without a doubt it will be busier in December.

Golf cart shoved to sea's edge
The cart was found by municipal police yesterday morning at the bottom of a cliff by the Caribbean sea, after presumably being shoved off the cliff by vandals in the early morning. It is a cart of the Prism rental agency (#22, plates 70-22 TRN) which was claimed by owner Rene Contreras. It was allegedly stolen by three people, after being parked in the lot of Villa Rolandis in Sac Bajo for a few hours. Luckily it was not submerged and residents helped the police rescue the unit. Nothing appeared to have been removed from the cart, but it was damaged, and a complaint was filed. The Judicial Police are investigating.

Upcoming Events:
TODAY!
Saturday evenings, Carlos grills up tasty ribs, steaks, burgers, & arranchera. From their menu, I am very fond of their shrimp with smoky peppers & the Paraiso salad with chicken, and their mousse is wonderfully decadent. I usually enjoy a couple ribs when Bruce orders them on Saturday nights, and his current favorite off the menu seems to be the arranchera quesadillas. The Neighbours tried those yesterday & said they were excellent!
We usually have the paella a couple times a month & often invite folks along to try it or recommend it to guests. (Generous serving for 2 w bucket of 5 beers for $250). You'll find the Iguana's menu at the Restaurant blog HERE
LOOK UP! Tonight & before dawn ... The annual Perseid Meteor Shower is supposed to peak in the wee hours of Sunday night/Monday morning!
The meteors are said to be most visible between midnight and dawn. The farther south you are, the later they are likely to be more visible. This is because the shower's radiant point (The point in the sky they appear to radiate from) needs to be above your horizon before you can see most of the meteors. The Perseus constellation ascends in the northeast around midnight & is highest in the sky before dawn. However it is hard to spot, so look for the W shaped constellation Cassiopeia if you want to spot the radiant point. This is not necessary, tho, because the meteors will appear in all parts of the sky. Jupiter & Mars will rise in the eastern sky before dawn.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are nesting on the eastern beaches. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills. The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony, and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!
There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July-August, especially during the full moons, so please watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle. The blue crabs will be migrating with full moons in Sept. & Oct...so look for them the week of Sept. 19th.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.

Pitahaya or Dragon Fruit
Pitaya (English), Pitahaya (Spanish), Wob (Maya), “chac wob” (pitahaya roja), Hylocereus undatus, Cactaceae Family. "Dragon Fruit"
Pitaya vines grow in the tropics worldwide and are native to Mexico. It grows wild across the peninsula, but not in coastal areas. It is cultivated mostly in gardens, and has commercial potential as an agricultural crop. Agricultural production has been very successful, but there have been problems with marketing.
The cactus flowers at night in June and the aromatic colorful fruits are harvested until October. |
There are two other varieties grown in the Yucatan. One is similar in size and taste, but plain yellow in appearance. The wild version is called pitahaya romaine ("xiquín" in Mayan), is more variable in size, and usually is not available commercially.
