ISLA MUJERES, 23 de agosto.- They are not operating at 100% like they were last year at this time. Although the season normally concludes on Sept. 15, this year it will conclude on Sept. 17. The season began with safety inspections of 75 boats, and there has been a 'saldo blanco' / season without incident, which is attributed to Armada de México (Navy), la Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente (Environmental Protection) (Profepa), la Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo (Port Authority)(Apiqroo) and la Capitanía de Puerto (Harbor Mater) in Isla Mujeres.

The municipal representative for the Education Dept (SEQ) said there are adequate spaces for more arrivals. There is still a lack of two teachers; one at the kindergarten "Isla Mujeres", and the other at the primary school "Cesar Mendoza", but the students are still having classes. The free text books arrived in a timely manner.

ISLA MUJERES, 23 de agosto. The summer season ended with a 'saldo blanco' at the hospital. (that usually means 'without serious incidents'. I guess for a hospital, 'serious' is relative.) They mostly saw accidents involving motorcycles and golf carts, at a rate of three to five a week, and only one required transport to a Cancun hospital for cranial trauma, while the rest of the injured were treated on the island. Regarding accidents in the home, on August 9th a seven year old girl was taken to Cancun for a skull fracture. The director said they also treated two bites from marine animals, in which the patients presented intoxication symptoms that were controlled with medications.
This year there were a greatly reduced number of diarrheal illnesses. It is assumed that this is because the population of the island has strong habits of correct handwashing, staying hydrated, keeping food fresh, and washing it thoroughly.

Vehicle ferries resume normal schedule
The reporter points out that the firefighters are loved and respected, and willing, but they lack equipment. The two pumping trucks are broken and parked near a hurricane shelter. One of them was donated from Cozumel and nicknamed "Piolin" (Mexico's equivalent of "Tweety"). When there is a fire, the hoses of the Navy and Aguakan provide the water and they help put out the fires. It is noted that there was no official recognition from the City Council for Firefighters day on August 22nd.

Aguakan destroys streets of Isla Mujeres
Destruye Aguakan calles de Isla Mujeres
. The Mayor is angry about Aguakan damaging streets and not restoring them to their former state & this article recounts an ongoing history of this problem, with details going back over five years. The City has tried to coordinate work, which has often lead to long delays. He said Aguakan has caused huge losses to the city and damage to the streets, and they only take into account their own profits. He said they do not seek permits or discuss future projects with the Council, and do not inform the local entities so they could work together.por esto
Falling rain causes disorder

Por Esto says residents blame lack of maintenance of the storm drains for problems caused by rain in colonias Salinas, La Gloria, and Canotal. There are homes in colonia Miraflores that are at risk of flooding when the nearby Salina becomes full. Residents want maintenance to the drains in these colonias and the pumps turned on when necessary, because rain is expected to continue this weekend.
From bonanza to a lack of tourism

Occupancy rates dropped below 35 percent and the nautical tourism providers were affected by the weather, while the beaches were barely half full. The weather discouraged swimming and caused some people to stay in their rooms.
Fishermen seek alternative employment
Pescadores buscan alternativas laborales+] Ver mas
Due to low demand, only about 10 percent of the catches are sold on a daily basis, and the rest is frozen. Bad weather has also hurt the catches. Seamen whose livelihood is dependent on nautical tours have also been affected by the weather. Demand for fish has been lowered because the big nautical tours usually include fish for the tourists, but they have not been buying. Many of the 90 fishermen who are part of the (unnamed) cooperative have been forced to stop fishing and seek other employment such as masonry, plumbing, and other trades to provide for their families in these slow times.

It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills. The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony, and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!
There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July-August, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.
Please slow your speed and try not to smash us. This week they are crossing b/c of the full moon.
