Isla Mujeres History on Facebook & Website

We have clear, sunny skies this morning, with whitecaps & good-sized breakers. Today's forecast for Isla Mujeres says--Mostly  partly cloudy to occasional clear skies, with (low) probabilities of occasional isolated rains, cool to hot temperatures with very hot temperatures probable during the day, Northeast winds 20 to 30 kph. with occasional stronger gusts.

1. The wide circulation of the high pressure system (located at the surface) at the western portion of the north Atlantic Ocean is driving a mass of fresh air from the north over the Gulf of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula, including the state of Quintana Roo, generating variable cloudiness with low probabilities for occasional isolated rain. Fresh, strong winds from the north & north east during the day, mainly in the coastal and southern areas of the state.

2. A high pressure system which is located in the middle levels of the atmosphere, with its center near the western Mexico, is influencing the Yucatan peninsula, generating a heat wave and rapidly modifying the temperatures of the continental air mass causing variable cloudiness, warm NE winds, and very low chances of occasional isolated rains.

~10a this morning....

There were a total of 275 reported cases at the end of February, which are shown by-month on the first graph. (277 now). I don't know what the values represent on the left side of the government graph. It notes a 50% decrease in the highlighted time period.

On Tuesday, March 9 our municipality continued to report a total of 277 positives with 25 deaths and now there are 231 recovered. The state geoportal for March 9 continued to report 6 active cases as: Meteorologcio-3, Salina Grande-1, Amp la Gloria-1, and colonia 006-1....which it has been reporting since February 10th, which was 27 days ago indicating to me that this information is probably outdated.

From the City (Ayuntamiento de Isla Mujeres)

In honor of International Women's Day, the municipal government held an event at the Bicentennial Dome in colonia La Gloria, coordinated by the Department of Economic and Social Development titled "Jornada Entre Nosotras", to bring the services of various municipal departments closer to the families in the colonias. There was a prior registration of participating residents, to direct them to the services they seek, without delays for those who arrived on time, to provide better care. The event was conducted with respect for sanitary measures against C-19.

Available services and attending agencies included job opportunity listings, nutritional counseling, free medical consultations and medications, Women's Institute, PANNAR, courses with CECATI 149, Department of Protection of Children, Teens and Families, Crime Prevention Department, and municipal DIF (social service agency).

The City has plans to use federal FORTAMUN funds to make renovations at the Mundaca Hacienda tourist attraction. Officials conducted a tour of the property to consider what work will be done in the first phase of remodeling the iconic hacienda, noting that appropriate measures will be taken to preserve its archeology and history. (Remains of Mayan buildings, including a temple and associated artifacts, were found several years ago.)

A Prevention Fair titled "Live Safe" will be held by the municipal police tomorrow, Thursday March 11 at the Bicentennial Dome in colonia Canotal near the Community Center at 4p, aimed mainly at children and young people, encouraging good values and behaviors. The event will respect all sanitary measure for the prevention of C-19.

 La Tertulia

La Tertulia reports that a newborn, wrapped in a blanket was found abandoned on a rug in the doorway of a home behind the Naval Base home around 6am this morning by a tourist, who had gone out to view the sunrise. The municipal police and Red Cross were immediately notified and the infant was taken to the Community Hospital. The DIF social service agency was notified of this event, which is unprecedented in the history of Isla Mujeres, and an investigation of the sad case is underway.

  Noti Isla Mujeres

Noti has a police interview on video stating the baby is a girl, who was found around 8am, but he didn't have a health status report from the Community Hospital.

On Saturday, Feb 27 the first preseason baseball game was scheduled at 1p. Pre-Covid 19, games were on Sundays starting at 1p (with pregame activities at 12-12:30 sometimes), at the Pescador field in front of Chedrui, when they were scheduled.

Friday, March 5th:  When public events were held, there was an annual ceremony commemorating the arrival of Francisco Hernandez Cordoba in 1517, who is credited with discovering the Yucatan and what is now Mexico, after landing on Isla Mujeres. This will presumably be conducted with a limited number of officials (without inviting the public) or virtually. The expedition of 110 men and 3 boats sailed from Cuba and and around the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, battling with the Maya, until all but one were injured, and over 50 died. The uninjured fellow went missing when they visited Florida, and Hernandez Cordoba died after returning to Cuba.
