A sterilization campaign took place in the mainland part of the municipality Dec. 1-5, as part of the activities carried out in compliance with the Regulation of Animal Protection and Welfare, achieving the sterilization of 510 animals.
In order to ensure the health of the islanders and prevent the spread of strays in the streets, a sterilization campaign took place in colonia San Román in Rancho Viejo by the.government of Isla Mujeres, through the municipal Department of Environment and Ecology, directed by Carlos Barranco García, in coordination with the associations "Isla Animals" and "Pets Land".
These actions work for the benefit of animal welfare and the containment of the population of dogs and cats, as well as preventing the increase of strays in the streets of the municipality.

Attracted by its beauty and tranquility, Denizart Simoes, stopped at Isla Mujeres, while he is attempting to break a Guinness Record, going around the world by bicycle.
Denizart Simoes, a Brazilian national, began his bicycle trip in 1999, spending more than 16 years traveling thru over 55 countries on five continents, journeying more than 500,000 kilometers.
Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, who is committed to promoting sports and athletic activites and to making Isla Mujeres a destination for international sporting events, welcomed the cyclist from Sao Paolo, Brazil, with open arms.
The director of the Institute of Sports and Recreation, Natanael Gallegos Salinas, acknowledged the efforts that the athlete is making, for which he has been supported with cash to continue his journey. He was assisted by the director of Tiburoneros Club, Enrique Cauich Bates, and also received accommodation during his stay by the owner of the hotel Chac Chí, Leonel Povedano Castillo.
"We are proud to be a destination that national and international athletes come to enjoy. Denizart Simoes is an example for all young people who have a dream, " said Mr. Gallegos Salinas. He said that the government of Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis is committed to sports and "we will continue to work on its momentum."
Denizart Simoes, recognized the beauty and tranquility of Isla Mujeres, and getting to know its attractions. He said, "Isla Mujeres is part of my journey in this trip. It is a very quiet and beautiful island, anyone can come and I know you would enjoy your stay."

Islanders and visitors enjoyed the Patron Saint celebrations without worries about security. LINK
Successful security operations carried out during the Patron Saint festivities. "Isla Mujeres is a municipality full of tradition and culture in which the inhabitants participate actively in many of the activities, which is why one of my commitments is to provide security during them, so that they can enjoy them without problems, with the certainty that their families will be protected, "said Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis.
The mayor of the island emphasized the importance of the festivities taking place safely and without incident, saying that it is a priority of his government that the municipal agencies work in a coordinated manner during this festivities, which takes place from November 28 to December 12, with the participation of hundreds of people, both islanders and tourists.
The director general of Public Safety and the Municipal Traffic Police, Jaime Ongay Ortíz, explained that the department maintains ongoing surveillance during all events to ensure the safety of families. He said, "We are constantly working in coordination with Civil Protection and the Red Cross, however, thanks to the support of the island's citizens so far there have been no major mishaps and a saldo blanco (no incidents) has been reported."
It is noted that although security is is increased for the Guadalupe-Reyes holiday period (Dec. 12-Jan. 6), operations began earlier in Isla Mujeres for the patron saint festivities Nov. 28-Dec. 8.
From the beginning of his administration, the mayor said he would work to maintain security in the municipality, therefore the number of officers assigned to the Public Security and Municipal Traffic Departments has increased significantly and, thanks to the coordinated work with the state and federal government, they have been provided with more equipment, vehicles and infrastructure.

Festivities in honor of Our Virgin of Immaculate Conception will conclude with the boat procession LINK
The festivities in honor of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception that began on November 28, concluded this Friday with the traditional maritime procession, an event that takes place year after year.
Hundreds of parishioners attended the Parish of the Immaculate Conception last night to sing the traditional mañanitas to the patron saint of Isla Mujeres, after participating in a vehicular procession through the different streets of Isla Mujeres..
Around 30 golf carts participated in this procession, in addition to motorcycles, with members of the motorcyclist club blocking off the main avenues so that the caravan could continue its course without any problems.
On Friday, the Communion Mass was celebrated for many children and young people, in addition to the celebrations by traditional women's church group of the Conchitas of Isla Mujeres, involving a great number of island families.
Closing these festivities, the Catholic Church will hold a final procession, with the participation of faithful believers, an event that culminates with the boat procession through the bay of Isla Mujeres scheduled for 3:45 in the afternoon .
As Father Raúl Sánchez Alonso had announced, these traditional events had excellent participation, with 18 groups celebrating, in addition to carrying out 138 confirmations officiated by Monsignor Pedro Pablo Elizondo.
As a part of these celebrations, the Parochial Photographic Museum was inaugurated, a large horse procession was held with 80 visiting horsemen and ~15 first communions were held. For the cultural part, a large number of islanders and visitors enjoyed the folkloric dancers, the charlotada, the carnival games, and the dances, with the events concluding with a 'saldo blanco' (no incidents).
The festivities conclude with the returning of the icon of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception to her niche. It is estimated that ~6800 islanders participated during this edition which also celebrated the 500th anniversary of the arrival of the Virgin to the Pueblo Magico.

Marinsa still in testing stage
Marinsa sigue en etapa de pruebasVer masFull article at this link
After a week of testing docking procedures, which began last Friday, testing continues for the Marinsa ferry company, who intend to put two boats into operation on the Isla Mujeres-Puerto Juarez route as soon as testing and approvals are completed. The boats have a capacity for 250 passengers with 150 seats. Official information about rates and schedules has not yet been released. There has been controversy in recent days following the unofficial release of information that Marinsa would charge the same rates as Ultramar, although the latter offers more comfort and faster crossings.
The terminal facilities at Punta Juarez are ready to receive the Marinsa ferries, and the facilities at Punta Sam are ready for the arrival in January of the new Ultramar car-passenger ferry, with a capacity for more than 50 vehicles and 300 seats for tourists, entering into competition with the Maritima vehicle-cargo ferry. Maritima maintained the same rates throughout 2017, despite an increase of 20% in fuel rates at the beginning of the year, but rate increases are expected in 2018.
Electrical outage for nearly an hour
Prolongado apagón en la isla. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
An electrical outage occurred shortly after 8am on Friday, affecting most of the island, and service was restored less than an hour later. At that time, the temperatures were refreshing as a result of stationery front #14, and therefore the problem had less of an impact. There were no public servants at the Town Hall because it was the holiday of the Feast of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception, but for the business sector, it was a normal working day.
The outage caused some annoyance among entrepreneurs and the general public, who were concerned that it could continue for a prolonged period of time, which occurred last January. On January 16th, there was an island-wide outage that lasted 15 hours, caused by a failure in the conductor at the connection with the underwater cable at North Beach. The business owners say outages cause a very bad image for visitors, especially when the winter high season is about to begin.
The CFE, Federal Electricity Commission, didn't issue a report about this incident. Some hotels and other companies are considering options such as maintaining their own generators so they are not entirely reliant on the CFE.

Celebrating New Year's in Isla Mujeres
To celebrate New Year's Eve, some families set up tables in the side streets with pinatas strung overhead, and dine on turkey stuffed with seasoned ground meat, while others crowd the Town Square for live music, dancing, and fireworks. Each neighborhood brings in the New Year with a bang, and the skies explode with color in all directions.
During the NYE countdown, there is a tradition of eating twelve uvas de buenas suerte (grapes of good luck), each representing a month, with a toast of champagne or cider. The party on the town square continues all night long. At the other end of the isle, people gather at Punta Sur to greet the first rays of the sun at the eastern-most point in Mexico.
Other customs include cleaning your house on New Year's Eve & sweeping out bad luck. Wearing red underwear could bring you love in the New Year, or your white undies may bring you peace, while yellow represents wealth. Those who hope to travel should grab an empty suitcase and carry it around the room or the block, and set it by the door. If you drop a shoe on New Year's morn and it lands "boca arriba" (face up) you will enjoy good luck in the upcoming year.
The old year is represented by a life sized character called El Viejo, The Old Man, who is later filled with fireworks and set ablaze. He may resemble a politician, and he is usually holding cigars & tequila. Fireworks are everywhere, and their names are metralletas (literally "machine guns" – but it means fire crackers), cañones (larger fire crackers), voladores (rockets in many different sizes), chifladores (whistlers), and barre pies ("foot sweepers", that spin on the ground & shoot sparks).
Kids receive toys on Dia de los Reyes, January 6, when families, friends, and coworkers share rosca de reyes. King's cake, usually with hot chocolate. If you get the Baby Jesus,it means you'll be hosting a party & providing the tamales on Candlemas Day, Feb. 2.
