Providers of tours in the Marine Park, including members of the five cooperatives and employees of dive shops, have threatened to hold a blockade of the access to the area if control isn't improved. They say there are all types of boats, private and tourism service provides, without any type of order. They have also threatened to stop paying for the wristbands. They are concerned about safety and the effect on the seabed and marine life. They noted that service providers have many rules to follow, and the private boats are not being monitored.
The head of SINTRA (Isis Morales) has been transferred to Chetumal and the Isla Mujeres SINTRA office is in transition while being downsized and combined with the offices in Cancun, which is also occurring in other municipalities as the Mobility Institute takes over many of their responsibilities in regard to regulating public transportation, according to an interview with the Head of the Mobility Institute, Jorge Perez Perez.
There is concern about the high number of decompression cases that have been treated in the Hyperbaric Chamber this lobster season. As of the beginning of this past weekend, the total was 71, compared to 63 cases last year, and the season continues until the end of the month. Last year, of the 63 who were treated, two died, and fortunately this year there have been no deaths. Of the two deaths last year, one was from an Isla Mujeres cooperative and the other was from Isla Holbox.

Fishermen are in a hurry
Pescadores muy apurados
During these last days of lobster season which concludes at midnight on February 28th, the fishermen are in a hurry to harvest from their traps (after winds caused the port to be closed for small boats for a week). On Sunday and Monday, fishermen with the Justicia Social cooperative harvested 1200 kilos (1.2 tons) and expect to collect a ton and a half to two tons before the season closes. The lobster that are stored during the closed season are inventoried for SARGAPA to prevent commercialization of product captured during the closed season. Lobster that are caught before the four month ban are allowed to be sold.It is estimated that since Sunday, production by the Isla Mujeres cooperatives may have reached 8 tons of lobster, mainly live.

In low season, the daily trash collection is about 38-40 tons, reaching 45 tons on the weekends. During Carnaval, it may reach or exceed 60 tons per day.Tourism activity remains stable

There will be 160 commercial spaces covering 22 acres, and 16 entertainment options on 10 acres. The property consists of 63 acres with 20 acres of water. Six billion pesos will be invested, which is ~330 million dollars.
It's scheduled to open Oct. 2020.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

In February, generally the temperatures are very pleasant, but weather for this month includes "nortes", fronts from the north whose winds often cause small boats to be restricted to port, and they may bring clouds, rain, and cooler temps. They cause the lobster to come out of their hiding places and move south across the seabed, increasing the catches of the fishermen.
Fishermen in this region are banned from catching Grouper and Octopus in February (and March). Lobster season ends after Feb. 28th (Lobsters kept in captivity continue to be available). LINK
