Conclusion of the successful campaign to collect Christmas trees. Forty six trees were collected and ground into compost.
Firefighters of Civil Protection Monday morning putting out a fire near Devil's Curve in an empty, deteriorated palapa, which was apparently caused by a couple of indigent fellows attempting to remove honey from a hive there. (Beekeepers use smoke when harvesting honey, to tranquilize the bees, but not actual fire.) They weren't injured. VIDEO

The Mayor said the Mobility Studies are expected to be completed next month and then a call will be made for companies who want to bid on offering public transportation services on the island and in the Continental Zone. Parents of students are among those with complaints about taxi drivers, who say urban transportation is needed because the taxis often pass by the students without stopping for them.

Isla Mujeres has been spared the impact felt by other tourism destinations where sargasso has arrived, a problem that prompted a meeting between the three levels of government, including the mayors of the 11 municipalities in Q. Roo. This was done upon instructions from the president of Mexico, to promote coordinated efforts between governmental agencies, private businesses, and citizens to address this problem.Isla Mujeres remains virtually free of sargasso, and work continues to keep the beaches clean, primarily by the personnel of ZOFEMAT
Opposition to Alcohol Law may cause modifications: Hours unchanged awaiting announcement

Jesus Contreras, the director in Isla Mujeres for the state department of Revenue Collection, said there has been opposition to the new Alcohol Law, reducing the hours of sales, and he thinks it is likely that there will be modifications. There have been demonstrations by business owners around the state, particularly in Cancun and Playa del Carmen. In Isla Mujeres, they haven't been outspoken against the issue, but they have been asking about it (and expressing negative opinions).Mr Contreras said they are waiting for announcements from the Governor and the state Alcohol Director.
Port reopened for small boats

The approach of Cold Front #40 caused the "Surada" winds to decrease, allowing the Harbor Master to reopen the port for small boats on Sunday morning, after they were restricted for a week. This will allow the lobster fishermen to work before the four month ban begins on March 1st. Recreational nautical activities resumed, including snorkeling tours, diving, and trips to Isla Contoy.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

In February, generally the temperatures are very pleasant, but weather for this month includes "nortes", fronts from the north whose winds often cause small boats to be restricted to port, and they may bring clouds, rain, and cooler temps. They cause the lobster to come out of their hiding places and move south across the seabed, increasing the catches of the fishermen.
Fishermen in this region are banned from catching Grouper and Octopus in February (and March). Lobster season ends after Feb. 28th (Lobsters kept in captivity continue to be available). LINK
