Final of the inter-company rapid soccer competition LINK
In an exciting rapid soccer game, the Bepensa team beat the Garrafon team with a score of 2-1, to become the tournament champions. The taxi union team won third place over the Dolphins. Recognition was also given to the two players who scored the most goals during the tournament, Vicente Garrido Aké and Luis May Alonso,who each scored 48 goals.

Taking care of the environment by planting trees
In commemoration of World Habitat Day, celebrated on the first Monday in October, municipal authorities and students planted 100 trees, of native species. The Department of Environment and Ecology provides, workshops and talks on environmental education in the schools on an ongoing basis, in coordination with various governmental and civil organizations. Topics include water conservation, care of wildlife, and good environmental practices
The planting was delayed by the weather and began in the "Las Iguanas" park. It will continue in other parks and green areas of the island with native species, such as chit palms, sea lilies, icacos, and ciricote, among others.
Municipal government taking care of the health of the islanders by providing free mammograms LINK
Coordinated by the DIF social service agency, a Breast Cancer Prevention workshop was held, as well as a day of free mammograms. The program was aimed at women 40-59, and those under 40 with a previous evaluation, who were registered at the CRIM cener on the island and given free transportation to the UNEME facilities in the municipality of Benito Juarez (Cancun). The main objective of the workshop was to teach women about the importance of knowing their bodies and doing periodic self exams for early detection of breast cancer.
On Oct. 19 an event will be held "Donate hair in exchange for smiles" and on Oct. 21 the "Pink Run" race will be held to raise funds for the treatment of women with breast cancer.

Continuing the beach cleaning work LINK
Oct. 11 The director of ZOFEMAT estimated that by Friday, all the sargasso would be cleaned away from North Beach, noting that about 7 tons had already been removed. It was taken to the Trash Transfer Facility and will be transported to the Continental Zone. Work was done rapidly to clean about 500 meters of beach, removing the unusually large amount of sargasso, with light machinery, wheelbarrows, and the help of volunteers and City employees.
Yesterday at his rally, the President-elect of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador made important commitments to thousands of people in Cancun, especially in regard to the construction of the Mayan train, the theme of safety and helping to address the sargasso problem.

Sargasso continues arriving

Oct. 12 Yesterday at dawn, there was a new arrival of sargasso on North Beach, after it had been cleaned by a strong effort by "hundreds" of volunteers and City personnel on Friday (and throughout the week). "Tens of tons" of sargaso flooded the area about 300 meters from the beach, on the west side, affecting a small part of Playa Centro. The cleaning efforts will be expanded on Saturday, and personnel with businesses in the affected area had already begun to work at an early hour, as well as those with ZOFEMAT (the Federal Zone agency). Employees with the CENDI (day care facility) agency were assisting at 7am. The new arrival spoiled the plans that this work would be completed the previous day. The concessionaires and ZOFEMAT continue to work diligently, and there has been a good response from requests for volunteers. By 11am, there were various mounds of sargasso gathered up and placed near the streets to be moved by a tractor vehicle and transported to the Trash Transfer Facility. The employees of the concessionaires had a good attitude about the clean-up, and did not rule out that the cold front which is expected on Saturday could change the currents and cause more sargasso to arrive on North Beach.

They may have resolved the conflict because Noti Isla Mujeres has video of the students on the beach, with two tents and tables, tho it looks like they'd just arrived.This article from Oct. 12 says that according to the middle school director, they were rescheduling the closing festivities to Monday, at the school dome, because they had been denied use of Playa Centro (on Friday). There were 337 participants in Friday morning's race. Recognition of the winners was being given, and they were in front of the beach, preparing for the closure activities, when they were informed by the administrator of the Posada del Mar hotel that they couldn't use the beach.
The school Director, Carlos Canto Salazar, said, "I was not there when Mr Enrique Cahuich presented himself, or I would have opposed it, because the beaches are the property of the nation and they don't belong to any individual." He also complained that when the 3 kilometer race began at the campus at 7am, the traffic police were not present to ensure the safety of the students, and they arrived a half hour later when the runners were in front of the Naval base.
Despite these problems, the celebrations which began on Tuesday were a success, including last night's performances on the Town Square, which lasted three hours. In addition to the artistic and cultural parts of the event, awards were presented to teachers, administrators, and retirees, as well as to some alumni, including those of the first class. There was a reading of the biography of the school, as well as anecdotes and expositions of experiences of retired teachers and alumni.

Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. At this time of year, Mexican families remember & celebrate their departed relatives. Hanal Pixan is the name of the Mayan celebration. Altars are made with photos of the deceased, where offerings of favorite foods and items are placed, copal incense is burned, and marigold flower petals are often used.
All Saints Day & All Souls Day, Nov. 1 & 2, are the Dias de los Muertos...one for children, one for adults, when families visit graves & clean & decorate them. On the island, these are private moments in the cemeteries, not public celebrations like in many parts of Mexico. Try some seasonal Pibi Pollo tamales & Pan de los Muertos pastry.
There is usually a silent procession from the Cemetery down Hidalgo, ending at the Casa de la Cultura, where there are usually altars representing various regions of Mexico, and a Catrina contest. Most of the participants in the procession are in catrina makeup or wearing regional clothing, and the rest are in white, and they carry candles.
Efforts are made to not let the Halloween overshadow the Mexican celebrations and traditions, and there are usually altar contests and/or exhibitions in the schools. There have also been competitions on the Town Square, and altars can be seen in various businesses, at the Town Hall and they are present in many homes.
