On Tuesday, the Tenth Military Police Brigade was inaugurated in the Isla Mujeres Continental Zone.The President of Mexico,Enrique Peña Nieto, presided over the event, which included the Governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín González, and the Mayor of Isla Mujeres, Juan Carrillo Soberanis.
This facility will house 3200 military police officers who have been trained to have greater contact with the community, and above all, to provide relief and support for the population. The event included a parade and a presentation of arms, as well as a speech by the President who said the presence of this arm of the Mexican Army will allow increased efforts in the matter of security in the state.
The President said, "At the beginning of my administration there were only 3 Military Brigades, all in Mexico City, but today, after clearly noting the need to expand the presence of the Military Police in the country, we have inaugurated the twelfth one for the benefit of Mexicans."
The Governor said that with the support of the 3,200 military police officers who will live in this Military City/,Ciudad Militar, day by day they will continue to counteract the insecurity and to do what needs to be done to improve public safety in the state.
The Mayor said that the installation of the Tenth Brigade of Military Police will ensure greater and better coordination of federal, state and municipal authorities in matters of citizen protection."As a municipal government we have the obligation to carry out actions that ensure the safety of the citizens of Isla Mujeres and the inauguration of this Military City is one of them," he said.

Z-Gas installing a storage plant on the isle

Oct 10 North Beach recovered its image after two days of cleaning away the large amount of sargasso ("hundreds of tons") that arrived on Monday night from the effects of the passage of Hurricane Michael. Municipal authorities provided two tractors, with one equipped with a rake to remove the harvested sargasso much faster then could be done manually, and the other one is being used to transfer it to vehicles to be taken away. They entered the beach area at the end of Carlos Lazo street, as well as at the ends of Guerrero and Hidalgo.The work began well before 7am to avoid interrupting the visitors who enjoy the white sands and shallow water of that area, and there was nearly no one in sight by 10am. Many of the municipal personnel arrived early, and then left before 9am to go do their jobs for the City. There were also employees for North Beach businesses assisting from an early hour. This cleaning program is scheduled to continue on Friday, to remove all remnants of the sargasso.

At this time of year, Mexican families remember & celebrate their departed relatives. Hanal Pixan is the name of the Mayan celebration. Altars are made with photos of the deceased, where offerings of favorite foods and items are placed, copal incense is burned, and marigold flower petals are often used.
All Saints Day & All Souls Day, Nov. 1 & 2, are the Dias de los Muertos...one for children, one for adults, when families visit graves & clean & decorate them. On the island, these are private moments in the cemeteries, not public celebrations like in many parts of Mexico. Try some seasonal Pibi Pollo tamales & Pan de los Muertos pastry.
There is usually a silent procession from the Cemetery down Hidalgo, ending at the Casa de la Cultura, where there are usually altars representing various regions of Mexico, and a Catrina contest. Most of the participants in the procession are in catrina makeup or wearing regional clothing, and the rest are in white, and they carry candles.
Efforts are made to not let the Halloween overshadow the Mexican celebrations and traditions, and there are usually altar contests and/or exhibitions in the schools. There have also been competitions on the Town Square, and altars can be seen in various businesses, at the Town Hall and they are present in many homes.
