Community and municipal overnment maintain the splendor of Isla Mujeres beaches LINK
Playa Centro is 100% sargasso-free, while they are still working on North Beach, which is 95% free. Thanks to the coordinated work between the community and the government, the unique white sand beaches can be fully enjoyed by locals and visitors.
Recently, there was an unusual arrival of large amounts of sargasso to the main beach of the island as a result of the passage of Hurricane "Michael". In response, governmental officials organized an initiative with civil servants and volunteers, who worked together cleaning the beach to preserve its beauty.
The Director of ZOFEMAT (Federal Zone agency) spoke about the government's commitment to keeping the beaches clean, noting that machinery was obtained to help remove the sargasso. She said that Playa Centro and Playa Norte are now looking radiant, and she acknowledged the assistance of various community groups and volunteers, in addition to the regular cleaners and City workers.

Raising awareness about breast cancer prevention
Intensificarán sensibilización
This weekend, a talk by gynecologist-oncologist Francisco Ramirez is being presented by the DIF to a group of women regarding the importance of visiting they doctor for evaluation. A recent study indicated that only 20% of Mexican women are getting mammograms, and there is a need to raise awareness during this Pink Month. He said that for a breast cancer screening program to yeild positive results, at least 75% of the population must respond either by invitation (referral?) or because they are aware the test should be done every two years.
This program is aimed at women 40 to 69 years of age, and women under 40 with previous assessments, and they can register at the CRIM facility between 9a and 4p and receive free transportation to the UNEME facility in the municipality of Benito Juarez (Cancun), where the mammograms will be provided.
On Oct. 19, is the event "Give hair in exchange for smiles" and on the 21st, the "Pink Race" will be held to raise funds for treatment of women with breast cancer.

Playa Centro always looked clean, except for one day when it was partially affected, and tourists were enjoying it. It is noted that when the northern winds arrive, this beach is popular. On Saturday, North beach was clean after the week long effort, except for a few remnants and it was expected to be totally clean for Sunday.There were concerns that effects of Cold Front #5 would bring more sargasso to the coasts of Quintana Roo, but this didn't happen and its effects weren't

Diver from Holbox suffers decompression illness after three hours of diving

Oct. 12 Yesterday at noon, a young man from Holbox suffered decompression illness and was transported to Isla Mujeres for treatment in the hyperbaric chamber. On Thursday afternoon, Joaquín Valdemar Sarmiento Flores, 23, of the "Cabo Catoche" cooperative, was diving at a site 36 meters deep, using a hose that supplied air from the surface. His first dive was for 90 minutes, the he rested for 15 minutes and dove again. His symptoms were numbness in his legs and discomfort in his arms, with vomiting and dizziness.At 4pm he returned to Holbox to receive medical attention, and was being hydrated at 8pm, when they requested service at the Hyperbaric Chamber in Isla Mujeres on Friday. He entered the chamber at 9:30am to receive treatment of "Table Five, modified", and was still in the capsule shortly before noon.
This was the second decompression event for Mr Sarmiento Flores, who had a similar accident last year, when he suffered moderate decompression. It is noted that there are four months remaining for the lobster catching season, and there are some concerns because specialists say the Hyperbaric Chamber is past the number of years that are considered its normal usage.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

At this time of year, Mexican families remember & celebrate their departed relatives. Hanal Pixan is the name of the Mayan celebration. Altars are made with photos of the deceased, where offerings of favorite foods and items are placed, copal incense is burned, and marigold flower petals are often used.
All Saints Day & All Souls Day, Nov. 1 & 2, are the Dias de los Muertos...one for children, one for adults, when families visit graves & clean & decorate them. On the island, these are private moments in the cemeteries, not public celebrations like in many parts of Mexico. Try some seasonal Pibi Pollo tamales & Pan de los Muertos pastry.
There is usually a silent procession from the Cemetery down Hidalgo, ending at the Casa de la Cultura, where there are usually altars representing various regions of Mexico, and a Catrina contest. Most of the participants in the procession are in catrina makeup or wearing regional clothing, and the rest are in white, and they carry candles.
Efforts are made to not let the Halloween overshadow the Mexican celebrations and traditions, and there are usually altar contests and/or exhibitions in the schools. There have also been competitions on the Town Square, and altars can be seen in various businesses, at the Town Hall and they are present in many homes.
