Complaint filed by City employee for unjustified dismissal
Marinely Trejo Vivas was interviewed about the complaint with the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare that she filed, alleging that the City transferred her to an unsuitable job, in an effort to get her to resign. She alleges that this is part of a "witch hunt" inside the Town Hall, with absurd changes of personnel including sending a worker in a wheelchair to inspect turtles at night. She said others were sent to the Continental Zone so that they would grow weary and resign.
She said in her case, at first she was relocated to beach cleaning, even though she has a medical excuse because of a back injury. She said, "Now they are trying to argue for my dismissal for abandonment of work, which is not true."
She has engaged a lawyer to fight her case, and notes that other have not wanted to fight and preferred to resign. She claims this is political revenge from the Mayor because she was unable to participate in his political campaign due to of her health condition, and that whoever didn't participate are being assigned to jobs that are punishments, like the garbage dump, the landfill, and cleaning of sewers. She said in her case, she was transferred to the job of Auxiliar de Intendencia (quartermaster?) in Rancho Viejo, on the mainland.
She said what has been happening is regrettable, and she hasn't received good treatment for the Director of Human Resources, Martin Trejo. She said that responsibility lies with this official and with the Mayor, and blames them for persecution.

Removing objectionable transformer
See Por Esto translation below regarding the 300 KVA transformer in colonia Miraflores that will be removed in response to complaints, by order of engineer Orlando Roque, CFE superintendent, regardless of the variations in voltage this may cause local residents. Now there have been additional complaints regarding transformers that were installed on sidewalks in colonia Caribeña and in colonia Caridad del Cobre, where residents are organizing a demonstration similar to that held in Miraflores. They want the two transformers relocated, not retired, because they are aware of the importance of these devices for voltage regulation.
Access closed at north end of airfield to control use of the area
On Tuesday, July 31, access was restricted, particularly for vehicles who are waiting to use the ferry to Punta Sam. The access was obstructed with a pile of rubble, restricting trucks from parking there while waiting for the next ferry. It had been announced on June 24 that the Isla Mujeres airstrip would be monitored 24 hours a day, after construction materials were deposited there, which were being distributed as part of an election campaign.
This was presumably done by the state Port Authority (APIQRoo) in Isla Mujeres, who have been the administrators of the area since June 28, according to an announcement made at that time by Juan José Fernández Carrillo, director general Vip Saesa (?).
Meanwhile, a small truck which was apparently doing patching work on the island, has been blocked in by the closure, along with several tree trunks which were left there recently. Athletes who use the runway to exercise will be able to use the other access by the control tower.
Indications are that the purpose of this closure is to maintain control of the use of the space, which is now under surveillance by APIQRoo.
Vehicle Ferry "Sergio Gracias Aguilar" has left for maintenance
Just over a week after the "Isla Blanca" ferry started operations, the "Sergio Gracia Aguilar" ferry was taken to a dry dock in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, to receive preventative and corrective maintenance. Company executives with Transbordadores de Isla Mujeres explained that the ship will now undergo extensive work that will include repairs to the hull and deck, as well as other technological improvements. One of them said, "We are talking about new navigation equipment and other changes that are now requireed by the maritime authorities."
The ferry left on Monday at 6:45am and is expected to arrive in Ciudad del Camen on Wednesday. It is estimated that this work will take about a month, then the boat will return to Isla Mujeres to resume its route, alternating its trips with the ferry "Isla Blanca", to work simultaneously.
The ferry "Sergio Gracia Aguilar" provided service for about six months, and then the maintenance of the "Isla Blanca" ferry was concluded. Personnel with the company Transbordadores de Isla Mujeres explained that these actions are part of the new improvements they are making to ensure the safety of their passengers.
The company expects service to be normalized in September regarding the crossings of both boats, and thus guarantee the safety of all people on both vessels.

CFE removes dangerous transformer

The CFE (Federal Electrical Commission) removed the transformer that had been installed 30 centimeters from a bedroom window in the home of Dr Leily Osorio Mares in colonia Miraflores. Residents acknowledged that these devices are necessary to provide electricity, but they say this was not a appropriate place for it. It is noted that there is very little space available in Miraflores where the lots are small and the sidewalks are narrow.
Dr. Osorio says the transformers cause electromagnetic pollution which result in increased incidence of childhood leukemia, breast cancer, and decreased defense systems, as well as allergic and inflammatory reactions. She said there was a demonstration after the transformer was installed by her home because residents said it did not meet safety standards, and represented a danger to the children and the community in general.
She said, "Several transformers have been placed in the colonias of the island, all in the same manner, on narrow sidewalks that block the path of pedestrians and attached to private homes. We are very grateful for the efforts of the CFE in providing energy, but we believe that there are other sites where they could be relocated without danger to people such as vacant, isolated lots, where there is not so many people passing thru. "
She explained that the Miraflores neighborhood is small, its streets and sidewalks are narrow, and the buildings are small, which are conditions that are not very suitable for the installation of this type of transformers, which, paradoxically, bring benefits and harm to the community.
In the La Gloria neighborhood, CFE placed a transformer on the sidewalk, almost at the entrance of premises that are occupied a laundry, although its managers, when consulted, indicated that it is too far from the areas where there is water to represent a problem, and they acknowledged that its location is not exactly the best.

The residents in the higher areas of colonia La Gloria and of Amplification La Gloria have been experiencing shortages of tap water, because there is often a lack of sufficient pressure for the water to go up to their (rooftop) tanks. This is blamed on the high season for tourism that the island is currently experiencing, and the accelerated growth and construction of hotels and homes, focused on tourist income.
The island suffered a similar situation in the 1990's during high seasons, and it became necessary for Aguakan to expand its infrastructure to ensure a supply for the whole community, expanding both the drainage and tap water networks, as well as the pumping stations.
One resident in the higher part of La Gloria explained that the water would arrive at night, but with very little pressure, which prevented it from going up to the tank. He said he bought a pump a few weeks ago, because periods of low pressure have become more common, especially in high seasons.
The residents of FOVISSSTE have also had water shortages, although their water tanks are on ground level, so they are not prevented from filling up. One resident who lives on the second floor explained that when there is insufficient pressure, the water doesn't come up in the pipes, so that at times, he and his neighbors must fill buckets from the general tap.
Eduardo Muñoz, who lives in front of the F building of FOVISSSTE said, "From what I see, the infrastructure of Aguakan has been exceeded by the growth of buildings; hotels have been built, as well as many rental houses for tourists, most of which have pools that need to be filled. Water consumption multiplies during the summer and Aguakan can no longer offer a hundred percent supply for the entire population. For the good of everyone, I hope they include addressing this problem among the work that is planned for this year, because if it is not addressed, the problems will reoccur with each high season and become worse as time passes and more buildings are authorized."

The lack of increased occupancy is blamed on travel agencies which persist in promoting Isla Mujeres a the backyard of Cancun, rather than as a consolidated destination with full services.
Although the ferries are operating at nearly 100% capacity, and the car ferry "Isla Blanca" has been authorized to carry passengers, the overall hotel occupancy rate is at 76% of which 87% is from the Continental Zone on the mainland, while the island is at 61% occupancy. Por Esto says this figure could be significantly higher if Isla Mujeres wasn't sold as a day trip by the travel agencies and information modules in Cancun, who sell all inclusive tour packages aboard boats, which offer the option of only staying for a few hours.
Some visitors are so fascinated by the natural beauty of the destination and the warmth of its people that they plan future vacations in the island, while for most it is just another outing for the day.
Tuesday was a busy day for all sectors of the tourism industry in Isla Mujeres, and many who enjoyed the beaches took advantage of the lower costs on Playa Centro, where they sought shade under palms from the strong sunshine. Other visitors rented golf carts, went shopping, or took snorkeling tours, among other activities.

The boats in Puerto Juarez that are offering tours to Isla Mujeres are doing very well, and the groups they cannot accommodate come to the island on the ferries, and then buy nautical tours. The Harbor Master reports there have been no incidents this holiday season, but four boats have been cited for issues such as lack of a document for the boat or crew or failure to meet one of the requirements about safety equipment. There have been some reports of boats speeding near the port facilities, but no incidents or accidents, so there is a 'saldo blanco' so far. The operations for inspection and surveillance will continue thru the holidays, by the personnel of Inspección y Vigilancia, in coordination with the Harbor Master's office and the Coast Guard.

Isla Mujeres Hoy /Juan Manuel Valdez Sanchez reports: City commemorates National Arbor Day in Isla Mujeres with a recycling workshop and reforestation of endemic species
The City of Isla Mujeres commemorated the National Arbor Day with various activities in which 60 children participated from the summer daycamp "Inderim 2018". Led by Carlos Barranco García, municipal director of Environment and Ecology, the children planted 50 sea lilies, 2 icacos (sic) and 12 ciricotes in a green area located in front of the Caribbean perimeter road.
After this activity, the children went to the Mundaca Hacienda palapa where they participated in a recycling workshop with various materials, working on the painting and trimming of recycled objects, which they made into bags and posters.
Antonio Coronado Rojas, Municipal General Secretary was present representing the Mayor, Juan Carrillo Soberanis. He thanked the authorities who gathered to commemorate this important date and congratulated the 60 children who enthusiastically joined in the care of the environment.
He said, "Participation by the children is vital for the good development of the community, especially in issues that have to do with the care of our environment. Arbor Day is a reminder of the importance of protecting the wooded areas that provide oxygen, water, food and essential raw materials."
The General Secretary of the City Council gave special recognition to the fine work of Mr. Barranco García, who, he said, is a great promoter for the conservation of plants, animals and the ecosystems of Isla Mujeres. LINK

The collections are on a well established schedule, from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the beaches, downtown and the perimeter area as well as the colonias of "Salinas", "Meteorológica" and "Ampliación La Gloria". From 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm they collect in the colonias of "La Gloria", "El Cañotal" and "Sac Bajo", going to Punta Sur; and there is a night route which covers the downtown area.
Pablo Jesús Moreno Povedano, general director of the Municipal Public Services Department, said that during the holiday weekends, the island receives about 28,000 visitors, which causes an increase of about 20 extra tons of trash.
He said, "For all of us who are part of the City government, it is a priority to keep the municipality clean, not only to give a good image to tourism, but to take care of the health of all the island families, so we encourage them to maintain the areas in front of their houses, not to throw garbage in the streets, and take out their waste at the appropriate time."

Friday, August 17 Events celebrating the founding of the town TBA. Isla Mujeres was founded on August 17, 1850 as the town of Dolores, which is celebrated annually with events which include placing a wreath at the Cross in the Bay, and performances on the Town Square.
Last year the Gastronomic Competition for Lionfish was held at the end of August.
