Starting work toward the Mayan Train in Quintana Roo LINK
Coordination work has begun at AGEPRO (the Agency of Strategic Projects of the State of Quintana Roo), which is being led by Eduardo Ortiz Jasso and by Rogelio Jiménez Pons, who was appointed to be the director of FONATUR, by President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrado. (FONATUR is the National Fund for the Development of Tourism).
Mr. Jimenez Pons is in charge of developing the Mayan Train which will depart from Cancun, travel thru the southern part of Quintana Roo, cross thru Calakmul in Campeche and some towns in the south of Tabasco, until it arrives in Palenque in Chiapas.
As Governor Carlos Joaquin has announced, AGEPRO has been working for a year and a half on the Cancun-Tulum Train project, which was originally proposed to be carried out through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Progress has been made regarding options for the route, analysis of the necessary rights-of-way, and financial models. This project is part of the large effort to reorient our public policies so that investments continue to arrive and Quintana Roo consolidates as one of the five most important economies in the country.
With the start of the coordination meetings, and because the Mayan Train also has a specific proposal, from now on, the similarities in both projects will be evaluated, within the Cancun-Tulum section and to reconcile a unique project for this route. Work will also be done on defining the line to the south of the State. To this end, the design, the alternatives of the layout, the construction systems and their construction stages will be reviewed, as well as the responsibilities and co-responsibilities between the Federal Government and the State Government. Subsequently, the options for the technology, operation and maintenance of the train will be evaluated. It is estimated that this work take at least four months.
Mr. Ortiz Jasso said, "We will seek to integrate the vision of both levels of government and to join efforts so that the project becomes a reality for the benefit of the development of the State, always respecting the environment and defining a viable project from the technical point of view, that is inclusive and with a high sense of social responsibility."
An increase in tortilla prices hasn't been ruled out LINK
Although the price of the tortilla has not increased for more than a year, the possibility of an adjustment in its prices has not been ruled out, according to Roman Colli Ku, who is involved in the industry and says prices have risen in other municipalities in recent months, due to rising costs, while these increases have been absorbed by the manufacturers in Isla Mujeres.
On Wednesday, Aug 1, the price of masa flour will increase by 500 pesos per ton. The last official increase was in March, which was justified by the increased cost of masa flour and of gasoline.

Residents object to placement of transformer

Residents of the Miraflores neighborhood are objecting to the installation of a transformer on the sidewalk in their neighborhood, on Fragata between prolongacion Rueda Medina and Corvina. It was installed in front of the home of Dr Leidy Osorio Mares on July 26th, and she sent a letter to the local superintendent of the CFE (Federal Electrical Commission) asking them to remove it, because of the risks it represents.
Since that received no response, a petition was signed by neighbors, asking the agency to comply with the Mexican Las about electrical installations, number 001, which says this type of high voltage equipment must be isolated with fencing, at a distance of 5-3 (sic) meters from residential walls, and is not to be installed in an inhabited area.
However, the transformer is located 30 centimeters from her bedroom window, and it must have a distance of at least 75 centimeters because of the heat it generates. In addition, there are concerns about the radiation it causes and risks for illnesses such as cancer, decreased immune defenses, and other condition. So they are asking for it to be removed before it is used to provide power in the area of the Miraflores neighborhood.
There are also concerns about it catching fire or even exploding from contact with water, since there is water draining from the roof of the doctor's family home. On Sunday, residents placed posters on the transformer, which has a capacity of 500kva, to express their objections to the device, saying that it represents a risk to their children and their neighborhood.

July 30 The skies were clear from dawn until 11am, when suddenly a squall arrived and caused a little rain, and cooled the temperatures a bit. The skies were cloudy for the rest of the day, but that didn't prevent the arrival of large numbers of tourists. Actually the temperatures were more comfortable for the thousands of tourists who arrived before, during and after the rainfall, which was the first effects of tropical wave #23, according to the Harbor Masters office and Civil Protection.
Weather reports said the rain caused the temperatures to drop from 31 to 29 degrees, and that more rain could fall in the evening. (It did.) Nautical activities continued throughout the day, without any problems. Regarding the mass consumption at sites selling seafood, such as Playa Tiburon where around a thousand people arrive daily, about 150 kilograms of Tikinxic style fish are prepared daily, made from the sierra and coronado fish, as well as about 30 kilos of chicken. The main clients are visitors on tours in boats coming from Puerto Juarez of the cooperative "Opca" and from the Isla Mujeres coop "Adolfo Lopez Mateos".

The complaints of the fishing cooperative "Isla Blanca" have not been resolved, so that will be left for the upcoming federal administration. They won a legal battle to regain their federal zone concession, after several years, but during that time their pier deteriorated from lack of maintenance, and they lost out on a 10 million federal investment to develop the space to farm cobia fish, by the Isla Blanca Coop and the Makax Coop, in a joint venture.
The five local coops all suffer economic difficulties due to the decrease in supply, and they are seeking partial assistance to improve and renew their equipment, such as boats, motors, nets, diving equipment, and longlines.
High demand for workers

With three weeks remaining until the end of the summer holiday season, there is a high demand for workers in the hotel and restaurant industry on the island, according to the job vacancy lists at the CROC union facility and online.
The local labor market isn't adequate to supply the demand, so now workers come from the neighboring city of Cancun, and can be observed arriving in the mornings and departing in the afternoons. There are also island residents who work in Cancun and the Maya Riviera, including qualified seamen who operate recreational boats or private yachts of corporations.
At the close of the summer holiday season, there is a slow period for three months, beginning in September, but the companies working with the CROC union aren't expected to cut their staffs, which has happened in previous years, according to the leader of the CROC union, Roman Maldonado.

Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Friday, August 17 Events celebrating the founding of the town TBA. Isla Mujeres was founded on August 17, 1850 as the town of Dolores, which is celebrated annually with events which include placing a wreath at the Cross in the Bay, and performances on the Town Square.
Last year the Gastronomic Competition for Lionfish was held at the end of August.
Plogging events to clean up the island are held on Saturdays LINK and here's the Accion Isla LINK who are having events associated with project RESCATE.
