Price of tortillas will remain the same for another month (photos & article)
Although the cost of flour for tortillas has risen, in Isla Mujeres the price of tortillas won't increase this month since the tortilleria owners already have flour in stock, according to industry representative Román Collí Kú. They also must compete with the franchise stores who offer lower prices, but the small businesses have better quality, he said. For the month of August, the price is expected to remain at 19 pesos a kilo or 20 pesos with a wrapper, but he said they will need to increase it after the next flour purchase.
Closure seal placed on Punta Sur residence
The municipal Urban Development Department placed a closure notice on a private residence that is located near the entrance to Punta Sur in Isla Mujeres, due to a lack of permits. Personnel with the agency said the closure of the house was due to the construction of a stairway to access the cliffs of Punta Sur and "El Garrafon" park, which isn't allowed because both sites have a concession with a private company for at least two decades.
With most closures, the seals are placed on the fence at the edge of the property, indicating access to the building is definitively restricted, but in this case only one small closure notice was place on a wall of the residence.
According to neighbors, the closure was carried out last week, but there hasn't been any activity at the home. SInce there is no free access to the property, it is unknown whether the construction of the stairway has continued or if it was suspended.

Some say submarine cable needs replacement

Some workers with the CFE (Federal Electrical Commission) say the underwater electrical cable has reached the end of its useful life, and needs replacement. They say there is still a risk of another blackout in Isla Mujeres which is why the CFE is providing mobile generators to the island to power the network, in the event of a new outage.
The generators can be seen in public spaces and at the two local substations, and it is noted that Aguakan has its own generators to guarantee the pumping of sewage at its stations. Although it was reported that two Aguakan generators were about to return to Cancun.
Some years ago, cathodic protection was provided to extend the life of the wiring, but it is assumed that the high level of consumption during this summer season is causing overload and generating instability, causing interruptions.
The first prolonged outage, of 15 hours, occurred in January 2017, and then there were just brief outages lasting some minutes, but this summer there have been three. One (on July 1st) during the vote counting for about two hours, and (the following day) for 10 hours, and the outage last week lasted about 13 hours.
During last week's outage there were economic losses and a loss of prestige for the island, and there are concerns that CFE should renew the cables.

On Wednesday, rain of medium intensity began falling just before noon, and tropical wave #24 was expected to arrive that night, which could cause humidity on Thursday. The precipitation didn't cause flooding and there were no incidents with the whale shark tours. There were no incidents on the beach, and tourists sought temporary shelter from the rain. The weather affected the nautical community, decreasing dive trips and causing cancellations. Some tours were already in the Marine Park when the rain arrived.
The port is expected to be open for general navigation on Thursday according to the forecasts, and there are no hurricanes forming in the Atlantic basin, according to the NHC.
Respecting the dunes

The concessionaires of the North Beach Federal Zone are respecting the dunes and promoting the formation of new ones to prevent new erosion in the event of a hurricane, which often cause this problem.
Adding rows of plants encourages the sand to be retained, and cause it increase during the favorable seasons. Therefore, there are several new dunes on the eastern side of Playa Norte, but there is also recent erosion that hasn't recovered yet near the Mia Hotel pier (bridge).
The companies that are facilitating the new dunes are Na-Balam and hotels and restaurants of the Lima family. When consulted, people in charge of the program said that this is a commitment to making an effort to prevent erosion, to avoid loss of sand during the passage of powerful storms.
The hurricane "Wilma" in 2005 caused strong erosion in the area, and after that they began the facilitation of dunes using native plants, and one of those involved commented this was done because they are a natural defense to the hurricanes and storms that occur in this region.
Recently, the business owners confirmed that several hundred thousand pesos are invested annually in order to maintain the rows of plants, observing that the plan is working to recover this extensive stretch of sand, almost to the original dimensions before there was a problem.
The concessionaires who are facilitating the dunes explain that they are natural defenses, but are often destroyed by the concessionaires, and then erosion occurs when there are high tides or strong waves, which can cause destruction of everything it their path.
Beaches without cigarette butts

Six months after it began, the project to collect cigarettes on Isla Mujeres has been a success, with the placement of 40 collector bottles at the palm trees of North Beach.. This proposal was made by Matias Ross, in association with the organization Verde Halago. He said the projects of Verde Halago in Playa del Carmen attracted his interest, so he contacted them and became their representative in Isla Mujeres.
He installed a total of 60 collectors around the island, at businesses and on Hidalgo avenue, and hopes the project will continue to grow, with more people interested in environmental conservation. Mr Ross said people have gotten more involved with picking up the butts from the ground and the sand and putting them where they belong, and the goal is to offer a simple notice at areas where visitors arrive, so they can participate in the project, although many of them already participate with the collection at North Beach.
Mr. Ross said the cigaretted butts from Isla Mujeres are taken to Playa del Carmen, and then to the headquarters of Verde Halago in Mexico City, where they are mixed with sawdust and recycled paper to create a paste that is molded into a pot for cactus plants. With a small amount of watering, the container softens, and becomes mostly deteriorated after a year, when it is cut into pieces and placed in the dirt, where it disintegrates completely after six months. In contrast, it takes an average of eight years for a cigarette butt to disintegrate in the open air. With this method, recycling occurs in a year and a half, without contamination, while each butt that is disposed as litter may contaminate more than 40 liters of potable water.
Cleaning campaign Mr. Ross also organizes a beach cleaning campaign every Saturday, involving volunteers, in coordination with Kai Creamer, a young woman who also organizes similar clean up campaigns for the seabed. This project, "Plogging Day", has already become an institution on Saturday mornings, from 8a to 10a, when they remove 30 to 40 jumbo bags of trash.
They are primarily removing plastic trash, which is one of the main polluters of the planet, and the volunteers have received some assistance from businesses and governmental agencies such as ZOFEMAT. The other goal of this project is to raise awareness about our environment.One of the volunteers, Zuriko Garcia, showed a young morena fish that had gotten tangled in strings of plastic and died of suffocation.
They are also planning to place receptacles at the beach for the plastic and aluminum beverage containers which are used in that area, so that these objects, which often end up in the sea, can be recycled instead.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

It's whale shark tour season (thru mid September) and turtle nesting season (thru mid October).
Friday, August 17 Events celebrating the founding of the town TBA. Isla Mujeres was founded on August 17, 1850 as the town of Dolores, which is celebrated annually with events which include placing a wreath at the Cross in the Bay, and performances on the Town Square.
Last year the Gastronomic Competition for Lionfish was held at the end of August.
Plogging events to clean up the island are held on Saturdays LINK and here's the Accion Isla LINK who are having events associated with project RESCATE.
