Today, accompanied by the authorities of the three levels of government, we conducted a tour of six schools in the municipality to verify the progress of maintenance works. We want children to have their schools in the best conditions! LINK
"Escuelas al Cien" is a program of the Federal Government, to improve the conditions of educational centers in the country, operated through the National Institute of Educational Physical Infrastructure (Inifed) and in coordination with the Institute of Educational Physical Infrastructure of Quintana Roo (Ifeqroo).
Legislator Candy Ayuso Achach, president of the Commission of Education, Science and Technology, reported that more resources are being designated to attend the entire educational infrastructure throughout the state and Isla Mujeres is no exception, with the purpose that the students have access to a better quality of life.
In total, more than 8 million pesos are being invested in the painting of classrooms, the repair of bathrooms, windows, workshops and in the construction of ramps for people with disabilities in preschool, primary and middle schools. This is benefiting students from the following schools: "Julio Saury", "César Mendoza", "Benito Juárez", "Hermanas Cancún-Mujeres", "Juan de la Barrera" and "Andrés Quintana Roo". (The first three are on the island.)
At the Interactive Center of the Municipal Youth Institute, young people can use computers, internet and printers free of charge for their homework and research. VIDEO LINK
Students are encouraged to make use of the Interactive Center, which is located in the Office of the Municipal Institute of Youth, in Cañotal mercado, which is open from 9 am to 5 pm. Mr. González Barredo said that since its opening they have had good reception from the islanders, who have used the services they provide for free.
The Director also mentioned the Student House, in Valladolid, which provides support for students and young entrepreneurs who need these spaces to complete their school projects and homework, and to provide them with the tools they need to excel.
Rehabilitation of 89 streetlights
The director of Public Services explains to the community that NO charge is being made in the garbage collection services and this will remain free for all island families. If someone asks you for money for these actions, come to us. (Only businesses pay for trash collection). VIDEO

There have been 64 cases of decompression among the lobster fishermen since season began July 1st. LINK
The most recent case occurred Friday, when lobster fisherman Martín Gómez Gabril, 38, of the cooperative "Caribe" went to the Hyperbaric Chamber at 4:50p, complaining of pain in both legs and a burning sensation in his abdomen. He underwent two sessions at level #5 and after treatment in the Hyperbaric Chamber, he experienced remarkable improvement. There have been a total of 64 patients, and the lobster season will conclude on February 28, when the four month ban begins.
King and Queen of Carnaval announced LINK
Víctor Manuel Rosado Sanchez, president of the organizing committee of Carnaval 2018 of Isla Mujeres, confirmed that when the deadline set by the organizing committee expired on Monday, only two people had responded to register as candidates for the King and Queen of Carnaval. They registered separately and are Weyler Díaz Ricalde and Lucia Coyoc Ruíz.
The Reyes Juveniles (Youth Queen and King) are María Luisa Magaña Trejo and Edwin Alexander Lora Marín and the Reyna of Diversity (Queen of Diversity) is Isieek Hernández Ramírez.
Mr. Rosado Sánchez said that the presentation of the sovereigns will be held on Sunday, January 28, when the presentation of the Reyna de la Diversidad will be made, but Carnaval will begin officially on February 13 with the coronation of all the sovereigns.
Regarding the Carnaval schedule, Saturday will be Cuban night. Sunday will have a fantasy theme with parades and Sunday evening is the night of diversity. On Monday evening there will be a performance by a comedian and for the last evening, Tuesday,there will be the burning of Juan Carnaval with the reading of the traditional will & testament.

"Zumba" studio opening on the island

The opening is planned for February 9th, with two for one promotions by owner-instructor Margely Salazar. She said that Zumba is the best way to lose weight, exercise, and keep fit in a very fun manner. She said, "I have always loved dancing and I discovered that by practicing Zumba you can have fun and exercise, but you don't feel like you are doing it. In a gym, for example, you are looking at the clock all the time and the time passes very slowly, but with Zumba, time flies and you don't even notice it."
Since that time, her goal was to teach Zumba classes one day, and she became certified as an instructor in Merida. She said, "I have taken several courses and certifications with Beto Pérez, who is the owner of the Zumba brand and other equally important people, as well as other instructors who take this seriously, so that we are always up-to-date and can offer the best."
As a result of becoming an expert teacher she began to organize events to raise funds for seriously ill or injured people who lacked the economic resources to get treatments and surgical interventions.(The studio location isn't given).

City Councilman Roberto Martínez Aragón, who is a member of the opposition "MORENA" party, plans to present an initiative to the Council to control the access of vehicles to the island. With the arrival of a vehicle ferry that is larger than the current one, this will involve more cars on the streets, coupled with the nearly one thousand golf carts that circulate around the island. He said this will undoubtedly cause a greater load of traffic that will need to be regulated in one way or another.
He said, "It is necessary to make changes in the Traffic Laws (Reglamento de Transporte y Explotación de Vías de Comunicación) and to consider a new mobility scheme, for example, that golf carts circulate exclusively on the Caribbean side. We must take measures to prevent saturation. Isla Mujeres doesn't have anywhere to grow and we can't build more roads or streets to accommodate the excess traffic."
He pointed out that the streets of the island are saturated by more than 1000 golf carts, including rentals, privately owned, and "pirate" (illegal) carts; plus the more than 300 taxis and ~2000 private motorcycles and cars; as well as the vehicles that deliver products and the City vehicles, which are too many vehicles for such a small area, according to the alderman.
"Article 8 of the Constitution says that the three branches (Executive, Legislative and Judicial) can take specific measures to integrate the rest of the state with the inhabitants of the three islands, which are in a position of geographical disadvantage and this article offers the option to add subsections, in such a way that Isla Mujeres, like the other two islands of Quintana Roo, with the autonomy granted by the Constitution, can regulate the access of vehicles to its territory in order to not affect mobility in general".

Raúl Sánchez Alonso, the parish priest, announced three years ago that Isla Mujeres would have a university module to serve young people who due to financial circumstances can not continue their higher education, and this is now becoming a reality. Yesterday, he was accompanied by Monsignor Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cárdenas, Bishop of the Prelature Cancún-Chetumal, who placed the first stone on the property of the Catholic Church, which the borders of the Mundaca estate, in company of the mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis.
There is also a group from the foreign community who also support the educational plan, so that the island's youth have the option to educate themselves and have more and better tools to face the available labor field of the tourism industry.
There was no discussion of private investment in this effort to build some modules to provide a classroom for dozens of young people. The university careers that would be considered are those that are related to the tourism industry on the island including languages like English. The details will be announced in upcoming months.
Starting in 2019, the university will be able to respond to the concerns of many low-income families so that their children have the opportunity to study for their careers right here, without having to cross to Cancun or go to neighboring cities further away.
Many who leave the Colegio de Bachilleres high school do not continue with their higher education, so they are employed in the tourism industry, therefore they do not have the resumes that are required to occupy executive positions in the growing hotel industry in the Continental Zone of Punta Sam and Isla Blanca.
Sánchez Alonso explained that the goal of this project to create the University of Isla Mujeres is "to ensure that all students who enter the Colegio de Bachilleres can continue with their higher education"; reduce the dropout rate, and provide everyone with the opportunity to study something here on the island and that they can work on the island, where the growth of the hotel industry is a reality.
Trash collection fees only apply to businesses

- The Director of Public Services of Isla Mujeres, José Ríos, confirmed that there is a fee of 200 pesos for businesses for a three ton vehicle of organic waste, at the Trash Transfer Facility, but it is still free for the community in general. He said it is expensive to convert it into fertilizer by placing it underground in the southern part of the property, because this type of waste in so longer accepted at the regional landfill. The amount of organic waste that is received at the Transfer Facility is increasing, and occupied a cavity area equivalent to 300 cubic meters before Christmas, but now a new area can be seen.
A receipt is issued in each case, and there is no charge for families, just for businesses. The machinery that shreds brush into compost is damaged and a new one is needed.
Fishermen unable to work

"In other times, when Isla Mujeres had few concrete houses, the families of fishermen faced difficult days of freezing at dawn with their houses of palapa and sheets of tin," said Mrs. Leidy Silva Perez when talking about the low temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees at night due to the cold wave that has affected the region recently.
Sitting on her bed, the 58-year-old interviewee said that today almost all fishermen have masonry houses and do not suffer much for this season. She said that these "low temperatures are atypical" in the first part of January. She is the wife of Inocente Velázquez, "Tilico", painter, fisherman and artisan, who has his house in the fishermen's neighborhood, on Matamoros Street. Doña Leidy says that she is sleeping well because of the cold, in her bed, but she recognizes that some families that live in the colonias are going through difficulties, as fishermen suffered in other times.
"I'm ready for the cold," she said, showing the environment of her home. She has not had a cold, takes care of herself, and eats well. The children of her family all live in their houses.
In the neighborhood of the Velázquez family there are three more families, among them Mrs. Mariela; one of her two daughters suffers from a cold and with these low temperatures it is accentuated, but she was seen playing in the yard at about 1pm.
The family Pech Hernandez faces the cold front with measures of prevention of respiratory diseases of all its members, they are staying warm. Netfalí Velázquez, a young fisherman, lamented that they have only left to work five times so far this year, the last time was Thursday, due to the cold front that is affecting the region, and they could be restricted from going out to sea until Friday.
He has a portfolio of clients who ask him to supply them with fish, and he hopes the weather will improve in order so he can go out again. Currently, he suffers from a mild cold due to the last descent to the seabed to harpoon fish, and his respiratory system was affected by the change in temperature. He said, "Under the water the sea feels hot, but on the surface there is a problem because it is cold there, and this change in temperature it affected me the last time I went fishing."
Now he is trying to help his father, "Tilico", with his handicrafts and deliver to the stores for sale, since he has only made about 500 pesos fishing so far this year. He hopes the weather improves so he can go out Thursday or Friday.
The port has been closed for small boats since Friday, and the fishermen hope it will reopen Tuesday if the strength of the norte is reduced, however it could increase again on Wednesday, according to the forecast given by the Harbor Master.
On Tuesday, temperatures could begin to rise to 26 degrees. On Monday it went to 22 during the day, which was cloudy nearly all day, when the federal department of Civil Protection reported that the temperature at dawn had a thermal sensation of 16 degrees, the lowest so far this year.
Car ferry rate increase planned

The vehicle ferry company, Maritima Isla Mujeres is planning to increase their rates by 20 percent in the first quarter of the year. They have absorbed the 20 percent increase in fuel costs (which occurred Jan 2017) for the past year. In addition, inflation was 6.77 percent in 2017, and diesel prices have risen 3 percent in the first two weeks of January. The price of Magna (gasoline) broke the 17 pesos per liter barrier and diesel has gone up to 18 pesos/liter. Because of its status as an island, Isla Mujeres is more affected by increased energy costs.
The 20% increase in the ferry rate is expected to cause increased prices for other items on the island, according to estimates by suppliers of produce and groceries.

The Cahuameros of Isla Mujeres won both games against the Aluxes of Cancun at the Convention Center this weekend with scores of 87-68 and 83-76, which brings them closer to qualifying for the semi finals.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Saturday, Jan. 6 Día de Reyes/ King's Day This day commemorates when the three kings or Magi visited Jesus & is the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas. Traditionally this is the day when Mexican children receive gifts (which are brought by the three kings as opposed to Santa). It is customary to eat Rosca de reyes, a sweet bread that represents King Herod's crown with figurines of baby Jesus hidden inside. Whoever finds the token in their piece is obligated to host a party on Candlemas Day (Dia de la Candelaria), Feb. 2, which usually includes tamales.
Festival for King's Day (Jan. 6) at the el Pescador baseball field in front of Chedruai on Saturday starting at 5p. More than 6000 people are expected to attend to enjoy the entertainment, surprises, and presents.
There's also a toy giveaway at Ruben's restaurant on Guerrero, but as of 8am on Jan. 5, they're unsure what time....probably ~11am.
Jan. 6 is Día de la Enfermera. This special day was established in 1931, when Dr. Jose Villagrana said nurses were like a "regalo de reyes"...a gift from the Magi. (International Nurse's Day is celebrated on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale).
