It is a pleasure to know that our beautiful Playa Norte is the only Mexican beach that is on the Forbes list of the most popular in the world LINK VIDEO
For its incomparable beauty, the ratification of the “Bandera Blanca” / "White Flag" designation and other qualities, North Beach / Playa Norte of Isla Mujeres is among the 10 most popular beaches in the world in the 2017, according to Forbes magazine.
This was announced on January 7, after thousands of TripAdvisor users voted for it in the Traveler's Choice Awards 2017, the only awards in the tourism sector that are based on thousands of opinions and comments from travelers around the world. and reflect the best in terms of service, quality and customer satisfaction.
It should be noted that Playa Norte is the only Mexican resort that has a place in this list, this thanks to the coordinated work of the three levels of government and the City of Isla Mujeres, who perform constant work to ensure cleanliness and safety, which led to receive the important "White Flag" award.
José Castillo Magaña, general director of Tourism, stressed that the most important work to keep the beach clean is done early in the morning, every day, by the staff of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), who carry out the cleaning and all the care that the beach needs to comply with the requirements of this certification.
He said, "One of the main commitments of the municipal government is that all visitors have an image of Isla Mujeres as a clean municipality, as this benefits the economy of island families, who in one way or another depend on tourism as main their main sustenance."
"Bandera Blanca" / "White Flag" is a designation that indicates compliance with the 120 criteria, including the inclusion of measures to protect the environment of Mexican beaches, taking care of water quality, solid waste management, coastal infrastructure, biodiversity , safety and services, environmental education and noise pollution, to ensure that tourists are visiting a clean and well-maintained space.
Also, this beach has various services that visitors and islanders can access, such as the use of palapas, umbrellas and loungers, beds, emergency services, toilets, showers and parking, among others.
The fact that Playa Norte is on the list of the 10 most popular beaches in the world brings great benefits to Isla Mujeres, because it represents another reason for thousands of visitors, national and foreign, to visit the municipality, bringing important economic benefits to all island families.

Cold front limits activities

Due to the winds from Cold Front #22 the port was closed for navigation by small boats, although they were able to work in the Bay, and boats over 40 feet were able to carry out their recreational activities. The port closure for small boats is expected to continue on Sunday.
There were fewer people than usual on Playa Norte, and the fishermen and diving boats weren't going out. They are hoping to resume activity on Monday and Tuesday, before the next cold front is expected.
Tourists enjoyed Playa Centro and other recreational sites around the island, and the 700 available golf carts were rented to visitors.
There is a sufficient supply of seafood to meet the demand in IM

The five cooperatives have had an adequate inventory of seafood to supply the demand so far during this high season of tourism, according to the president of the Federation of Cooperatives of Quintana Roo, Baltazar Gómez Catzin. A few days ago one of the cooperatives had 150 kilograms of fish to meet the demands of the restaurants.
It is approximately one month before the beginning of Lent, and it is recalled that last year at that time that seafood products became generally depleted and roasted chicken was being offered at the Sac Bajo beaches, who normally serve fish.
Currently there is enough lobster to meet local demand, and a little more than a month remains before the close of the season for their capture. Fishermen are hoping that the weather will improve on Monday and Tuesday, before the arrival of the next cold front.

The Port Authority of Quintana Roo, APIQRoo is expecting the resolution of their request for the revocation of two contracts involving public docks, which were made during the administration of the previous APIQRoo Director, Roosevelt Erce Barron Barrera, who is currently imprisoned due to allegations of irregular performance of his duties.
Por Esto announced on Sept. 29 that APIQRoo in Isla Mujeres recognized the request to the General Directorate of Ports of the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) to revoke these contracts. The Federal Agency (SCT) did not resolve both of these cases before the end of 2017, but it is expected that it will do so at any time, since it is nearly one year since the revocation request.
At the time, Rosa Elena Ríos Fernández, local representative of the state agency (APIQRoo), showed copies of those contracts of the concrete dock, with its federal zone, and the historic wood pier that served for a century as the gateway to Isla Mujeres. (the "Magana ferry dock"). These contracts were carried out in a non-transparent manner. (manera oscura). According to unofficial sources, this was presumed to have the approval of former Governor Roberto Borge Angula, who is currently imprisoned in Morelos.
In the case of the concrete dock and its docking infrastructure, this involves 1974.79 square meters, and the documents say the agreement also involves 948.74 square meters of Federal Zone, including the port area that runs parallel to the airfield, which is about 300 linear meters, and the nearby area of water, that is 17,438 square meters. The contract was signed on December 11, 2012 by Ercé Barrón and by Francisco Manuel Carreño Martínez, administrator of the "Operadora Náutica del Sureste, S. A de C. V".
The procedures were processed quickly by the SCT and on December 21 the general director of Ports, Alejandro Hernández Cervantes signed, and he had given notice of the contract "Apiqro01-402 / 12", October 17, 2012 in favor of Operadora Náutica del Sureste. The agreement is valid for 30 years.
This is a large business, with a preliminary draft of the federal area of a marina complex with a capacity for at least 300 yachts, which was presented to the business community during the administration of (former Governor) Mario Villanueva Madrid.
The Wooden Pier
The contract for the wooden pier was also processed quickly by the SCT. On January 22, 2016, APIQRoo requested the contract of a partial transfer of rights and obligations in favor of Jesus Rabago Orozco. Once again, the general director of Ports, Alejandro Hernández Cervantes responded to Erce Barron, on Feb. 22, with the authorization of the registration "Apiqro01-517 / 16", for the historic wooden pier, which had served as the entry point for the island for a century. The surface area of the wooden pier is 164.34 square meters, and it had already been occupied for two months, in exchange for a payment of 8000 pesos per month, plus taxes and fees. The term on this contract is for 10 year, and a bar business called "Muelle Azul" was installed. It is operated by representatives of Mr Rabago Orozco, whose residence is listed as Mexico City.
In its request for the reversal of these two contracts, APIQRoo has said that the SCT does not normally act quickly when agreeing to a request, that it is a lengthy process.

Workers unhappy about Banorte ATM closure

Municipal and state workers who formerly used the Banorte ATM do not like having to pay commissions when they use ATMs with other banks, such as Banamex or HSBC. The leader of the CROC labor union, Roman Maldonado, wants the executives of Banorte to reinstall the ATM which was unexpectedly closed at the end of December.
Although Banorte was provided with a public space on Juarez Avenue for their ATM, they did not pay attention to carrying out the required procedures and the ATM was closed down by the Urban Development department. There are also requests from Mexican tourists for ATMs for the Bancomer, Santander, and other institutions where they have accounts.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Saturday, Jan. 6 Día de Reyes/ King's Day This day commemorates when the three kings or Magi visited Jesus & is the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas. Traditionally this is the day when Mexican children receive gifts (which are brought by the three kings as opposed to Santa). It is customary to eat Rosca de reyes, a sweet bread that represents King Herod's crown with figurines of baby Jesus hidden inside. Whoever finds the token in their piece is obligated to host a party on Candlemas Day (Dia de la Candelaria), Feb. 2, which usually includes tamales.
Festival for King's Day (Jan. 6) at the el Pescador baseball field in front of Chedruai on Saturday starting at 5p. More than 6000 people are expected to attend to enjoy the entertainment, surprises, and presents.
There's also a toy giveaway at Ruben's restaurant on Guerrero, but as of 8am on Jan. 5, they're unsure what time....probably ~11am.
Jan. 6 is Día de la Enfermera. This special day was established in 1931, when Dr. Jose Villagrana said nurses were like a "regalo de reyes"...a gift from the Magi. (International Nurse's Day is celebrated on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale).
