Police Chief & Director of Ops Resign
No official reasons have been given for the resignations of the Police Chief and the Coordinator of Operations. Joaquín Poot Acosta, and Jairo Chávez Juan, which were submitted to the Mayor on Monday. The Mayor said their resignations were voluntary and for personal reasons. After the resignations the mayor said that during the City Council meeting scheduled for yesterday afternoon, that Leo Ortiz would be proposed for the job of Police Chief. Reassurances were made that the both people did a good job for the City, and Leo Ortiz has previously had this job here and meets all the requirements necessary to ensure safety and order in Isla Mujeres. Ferries Were Running Normally Despite Weather
In this report dated Tuesday, it is noted that the ferries are continuing to run normally, including the cargo ferried, and that the stormy weather was expected to continue for another 24 hours. Jesus Molina/Diario Respuesta The flooding in Cancun was much worse than in Isla Mujeres, and residents reported that while the ferries were running normally, at times they had difficulty getting to the ferry terminal due to flooding of the streets in Cancun causing taxis to decline to go to areas where the water was too deep, until conditions improved.

Diario Q Roo says (in a report from Wednesday) the worst effects occurred on Hidalgo where the water which was contaminated with sewage overflowed into some shops, noting there was one owner of a shop selling silver and souvenirs who was too sad to talk about it, despite one of his employees sleeping there with children who could become sick from the bad odors and humidity. The souvenir shop "Candy" was affected by the waters entering their shop, and the managers and owners want the City of acquire more powerful pumps. The Mayor said they were taking the situation very seriously, and confirmed that assistance had been sought with CAPA for adequately powered pumps to lower the levels of the lakes. The pumps were working at full capacity, but that was not enough. The Mayor said during the Anti Hurricane committee meeting Tuesday afternoon they discussed the events of the 'test' in relation to future responses to hurricanes. It is noted that on a tour the reporter noted a large accumulation of trash at the doors and fronts of shops and homes, despite efforts by City staff to pick it up.
On Facebook, the Mayor thanked Aguakan and their engineers, for assistance with the pumps, while reassuring residents that they were working on lowering the lake levels, and he published photographs showing that the efforts were effective.
Anti-Hurricane Committee Meeting
The meeting Tuesday of the Anti-Hurricane Committee (whose name is actually Comité Operativo Municipal para Fenómenos Hidrometeorológicos 2013 which should properly be translated to Municipal Operations Committee on Hydrometeorological Phenomena 2013. I am not the only reporter to take a little journalistic license with that title.) was attended by authorities of the following agencies: Protección Civil, Marina, Capitanía de Puerto, Seguridad Pública, and it was led by the municipal president (mayor) Hugo Sánchez Montalvo. He explained that the Civil Protection agency has bee working in coordination with Aguakan for several weeks at cleaning the sewers and storm drain lines. Members of the committee explained their functions in working with other agencies like the CFE, Federal Electricity Commission, noting that when the abundant rains are not accompanied by strong winds, there is no need to cut the electricity. Inspections will be done in coordination with the CFE to verify that the power lines are no obstructed by trees, and where that condition is detected, the pruning work will be performed by the federal or municipal agency. Coordination is also being done with the Red Cross and the State Ministry of Health, SESA. And then TvIM tweeted this croc photo (I think by Jose Dominguez) in Isla Mujeres, ~300 meters from the Catholic Church in La Gloria. It was caught last night. They very occasionally get outa Mundaca when there is flooding, but are generally spotted in a lagoon or similar marshy area, and are returned to Mundaca. Islenos are pretty blase about them getting into the lagoons occasionally, but folks are talking about this one! Last year when a reporter commented about a croc being loose IN the Mundaca park being bad for tourism, the worker he was interviewing said the loose croc was no big deal, but the mosquitoes had gotten Really Fierce!
