Rain Disrupts Activities
Heavy rains on Monday disrupted everyday activities again affecting nautical tourism providers and fishermen, with navigation restricted to vessels over 40 feet since Saturday. Bsinesses and Islander families were all affected, with absenteeism at 100% at the preschool-kindergartens, and parents experienced difficulties picking their other children up from school. The sports fields and low areas of the streets became flooded, which caused problems for motorcycles in areas where moving water was ~30 cm deep. Source:  Manuel Valdez/Diario Q Roo
Diario Respuesta/Jesus Molina also reported the loss of economic activity and said the beaches and streets looked like a ghost town, except for merchants who were keeping water from entering their shops on Hidalgo, which was called a little "Venecia del Caribe"  Venice of the Caribbean. Under overcast skies, that continually threatened rain, many islanders chose not to leave their homes on Sunday, with more rain expected the next 48 hours.
Por Esto notes there were fishermen and other boat owners whose boats were moored at the docks who were reenforcing the moorings, and that the forecasts indicate that rains and cloudy weather could last until Friday. The Harbor Master said restrictions could continue through today and tomorrow.
 Por Esto reports in another article that ~70 percent of the downtown business were closed due to bad weather on Monday. Restaurants, jewelry stores, and souvenir stores were some of the businesses that were affected, and the beaches were empty. On Monday morning the main street of Rueda Medina was most affected with puddles and some flooding from the rain. There were red flags flying at the beaches to prevent tourists from entering the sea among the strong waves. All commercial activities were affected, the streets became flooded, people who left their homes to work used umbrellas, raincoats, and towels to ward off the rain. The biggest winners in this climate were the taxi drivers, who were successfully offering their services to all the citizens, who at this time prefer this means of transport to stay dry.

Cleaning Storm Drains With More Rain Expected

With predictions that the rains may continue for at least two ore days, the personnel of the Municipal Protection Agency are devoted to the work of de-silting the storm drains and cleaning out trash. The agency director, Gabriel Sulu Martinez, ,said that the rains will continue for the next 48 hours with thunderstorms and East and Southeast winds at 25 to 35 Km/h with occasional gusts of 45 km per hour. He noted that the maximum temperature will be around 33 degrees Celsius and with a possible low of 20 degrees in the evenings and early mornings. The Director spoke about the importance of cleaning rooftops and patios, and to avoid littering in the streets. People are asked to keep their shrubs trimmed, especially those near the street because the leaves can clog the storm drains. At four in the afternoon on Tuesday, the Municipal Committee Anti-Hurricane 2013 will be installed officially.

Por Esto reports that heavy rains occurred on Monday morning because of a low pressure trough located north of the Yucatan peninsula. This causes some flooding and water logging to parts of Isla Mujeres, so the Civil Protection Department has been busy dredging out the storm drains, removing silt, sand, and trash. In addition to the advise listed in DQR, the director asked that people doing construction avoid leaving their materials in public areas where they can obstruct the flow of water going to the drains. He advised motorists to drive with extra caution and for families to avoid sudden temperature changes which are associated with respiratory diseases, especially among the more vulnerable elderly residents and the young children.

Temporary Reduction In Cargo Ferry Service
On Tuesday and Wednesday the ferry crossings will be reduced from seven to five round trips, for maintenance to the ramps of the ferry Sergio Gracia Aguilar, while the other, Isla Blance provides service at these times Tuesday (today) Departing the island at  06:00, 09:30, 12:45, 16:15 & 19:15 horas. Departing Punta Sam at 07:15, 11:00, 14:45, 17:30 and 20:15. The normal schedule is expected to resume on Thursday which is Departing the island at 6:00, 08:00, 9:30, 12:00, 14:00, 16:15 and 19:00 , and departing Punta Sam at, 7:00, 9:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:30 and 20:15.  A grey rainy day. These were taken at 7:30, since sunrise was the same only darker. Above is looking straight out "Eastward"  Below is looking northward up the coast...you can barely see Punta Norte, tho it showed up a lil better in Real Life.

 Below is looking southward..the lights at the Chiapaneco overlook are still on, which is not usual...since at this time the sun is usually shining.

A large puddle at the base of The Neighbours rocks and some sand moved around. On the roof the water was over my toes until I cleared the palapa straw off the drain covers. It never gets much higher than that because the roof is designed to keep the "corral" dry where the a/c compressors are. So if the drains aren't handling draining off the water fast enough, it goes down the stairs and out the balcony drain. A very smart design!

 Out front there was (and still is at noon) a surprising amount of traffic. Water was collected on this side of the street near the curb, but not on the other side.

I coulda stayed out there longer and gotten better pics, but you get the idea and I was wet from being up on the roof.

At noon local time today (in Central Mexico) the Servicio Meterorologico National of CONAGUA has announced a special advisory of Potential for strong winds over 50km/hr in states that include Quintana Roo. 

 #4 Level of Storm:  Potential for torrential rain in Q Roo including the island of Cozumel (and the state of Yucatan).> 150mm (which is 6 inches)

High probability equal of greater than 80% of Rain: Strong/Very Strong/Intense/Torrential

 

 

The intensity of the storm can be accompanied by heavy rain intervals, falling hail, electrical activity (discharge cloud-cloud or cloud-to-ground), strong winds can cause damage and high waves in coastal areas. Depending on the local terrain, can produce flash floods, mudslides and landslides terrain in mountainous areas. Caution is recommended.
