From the City FB page...
Before-After The caption thanks our friends with the City for the cleaning work done in the streets of our beautiful island.
Working as a team for a clean island
Enjoy our beaches that are free of sargasso
The Director of Tourism, José de Jesus Castillo Magaña, reports that tourism has increased by 14 percent since last year, which he attributes to promotion, being a Pueblo Magico, offering a safe, clean, green destination with good cuisine & many water activities, and always taking care of the environment. He says the beaches are in optimal condition and free of sargasso, as well as being listed as the ninth best beach in the world by TripAdvisor. Soon both Playa Norte and Playa Centro will have the blue flag award, indicating excellence in cleanliness and services. He said the work of various municipal departments responsible for the care of tourist attractions is very important, as well as the support and participation of Islanders, to continue the increase in visitors and the increase in economic benefits for island families.
Members of the Taxi Union were out early this morning (Saturday) cleaning up the island. The caption says they were about to be joined by the workers from ZOFEMAT (who clean the downtown beaches daily 5a-10a, and other coastal areas intermittently). photos.
Photos of the personnel who clean the beaches & the clean beaches, noting this is an admirable job and they are doing good work, with a reminder to put trash in the appropriate receptacles, for a Clean Green Isla. Isla Limpia. Isla Verde.
The President of Mexico will be in the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres on Monday, conducting his usual Monday morning press conference from the Ciudad Militar (military base) there. He plans to talk about the Tren Maya (Mayan Train) project, sargasso, and social development programs. He'll be visiting Tulum & Playa del Carmen tomorrow. LINK

Isla Mujeres news briefs
Breves de Isla Mujeres
This information has already been translated..about the Mayor of Bonita Springs receiving postcards from students of Isla Mujeres as part of our sister city relationship, about the "Isla Verde" campaign & cleanups, and that it was false news that there would be a water suspension this weekend.
Nighttime monitoring of beaches where sea turtles nest
Vigilancia nocturna de arribo de tortugas marinas
There has been increasing surveillance by staff with the Tortugranja of the eastern beaches of the island where sea turtles are nesting, to collect and protect the eggs. These people have been trained to carry out this work and to assist in raising awareness about protecting sea turtles. Residents are encouraged to call the police if they see anyone committing crimes such as stealing eggs or trying to capture or harm the turtles.Volunteers, independent of the Tortugranja, have been cleaning the turtle nesting beaches recently, and it is noted that the beaches are free of sargasso, and the turtles are able to come ashore with no impediments.
Turtles are mating in the waters off the southern end of the island, and many tourists arrive with binoculars.
Some want warning signs for cliffs
Urgen advertencias en los acantilados
Despite a tourist recently falling from a cliff while taking a photograph, visitors continue to pose for pictures on the edges of the precipices. (The French tourist fell more than 10 meters, but luckily landed in a sandy area.)Some golf cart agencies have begun advising customers to stay away from the edges and avoid risk of collapse, such as t e Caribbean Malecon and Punta Sur, which are locations visited by hundreds of tourists daily. (Tourist also drive their carts near the edges of some cliffs).
Alleged "pirate" taxi impounded
Aseguran taxi “pirata” en operativo
A taxi with a "superimposed" license plate and no number was impounded in an operation by IMOVEQROO (State Mobility Institute), and its driver was arrested due to his behavior with the officials. The owner of the taxi is Eduardo Peniche, aka "Wato", former head of the taxi union. He presented the ownership documentation, and explained that the vehicle is 'deregistered' and cannot operate as a taxi. He said it is still red & has its taxi plates because it was discharged in recent days. Its 'superimposed' plate is 46-65-TRY (which is a taxi plate number, not a private plate). The officials said this is an irregularity, and the agents with the Prosecutor's office said it is grounds for detention and impounding. However, it may be a misdemeanor (administrative) crime.
It was the only vehicle impounded in this operation, which took place near the curve by the Mundaca Hacienda. On June 6th, IMOVEQROO reported that in the previous two months, 13 golf carts and one taxi were impounded.

Incubation pen Tortugranja (not 2019) |
Turtle nesting season continues throughout June. The turtles nest along the eastern beaches in the wee hours of the night and Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in a pen outside the facility. Three species nest annually in Isla Mujeres; Greens, Loggerheads, and Hawksbills, and very rarely, a Leatherback will attempt to nest, but the sand usually isn't deep enough. The sex of the turtles is determined by the temperature of the sand, which is common in reptiles.
