~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~For the second day in a row, as part of the "Isla Verde" (Green Isla) program, municipal officials & employees, led by Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, came out for an ongoing campaign of cleaning brigades to maintain a positive urban image for the arrival of local and foreign tourists.
The program is spearheaded by the Department Directors of the City, who will carry out ongoing brigades to clean up every corner of the municipality, including beaches, mangroves and even, within the sea. The general population are invited to join and contribute through the separation of their waste into organic and inorganic.
The Mayor said, "We all want our island to be the most beautiful of the whole state, even in the Republic, that is why we are redoubling efforts with the help of each area,integrated by the City administrators, so that together we achieve the goal of cleaning our beautiful Pueblo Magico. With this, the tourists that come to the island daily will take away a good image, and the locals can enjoy a clean, healthy and green municipality.

This year, tourism has increased by 14% compared to last year. The City has acquired more trash trucks to collect & transport it to the mainland. The Mayor is requesting that we separate out our 'organic' (food) trash & compact the inorganic (plastic, paper, metal), so it takes up less space. Note-Separate the aluminum & passers-by will collect it or the trash collection guys will recycle it, since it can be exchanged for cash.
There is good compliance with the new collection schedule & others are reminded not to put trash out before the 8p pick-up time.
With the new & repaired trucks, 100-110 tons are being
transported daily from the Trash Transfer Facility to reduce the
backlog. There is also a new "Isla Verde" campaign using City employees
& volunteers to paint, sweep, weed, & clean up the island, which
began downtown this week. Everyone's invited to join in tomorrow
(Saturday), meeting at 7:30a at Las Iguanas Park.
Sunday at 8p on the Town Square--Latin Dancers Dance Studio will perform. Free.

The Mayor of Bonita Springs recently received postcards from Isla Mujeres students about typical traditions, foods, and cultural experiences on the island. A response is expected from the students of Bonita Springs.

Whale shark tour operators say they have only worked ten days in the past month and that business is decreased this season.
When the lobster season reopens on July 1st, the prices will be remain the same as last season at 550 pesos per kilo of tails and 290 per kilo of whole lobster, with a discount of 2% for administrative costs of each cooperative. (About $14/lb and $7.25/lb)

Arrest of two suspects for recent robberies
Descubrieron a los ladrones
One was arrested when returning the moto allegedly used in the robberies, without its decals, and the second was arrested when he came looking for his partner. They are suspected of robbing the SIX store and the gas station, as well as other recent robberies. Workers at the rental agency recognized tattoos that were shown in the security video and photographs on social media. Ms Pia Fernandez also complained about trash being thrown in the mangroves by cart users, and the hazard they present being parked by the curve near Playa Lancheros.

The Human Rights Commission held a Human Rights Fair on Wednesday at the Andres Quintana Roo primary school. A specialist was present who provided examinations for several students due to their classroom behaviors. The "Serpents & Stairs" game was provided, and information about rights of minors.

The primary school "María Ángela Tah Palma", for students needing special education, was founded three years ago, with private and individual support, and has graduated its first student. It is located in the Colonia La Gloria, on Boquinete street, adjacent to the substation of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). There are eight students who plan to continue their education in the next school year.The school has space to double its current enrollment and is encouraging more parents to enroll their special needs children, since the institution has full recognition of the SEP (Ministry of Public Education). This means that students who complete their education at the school are eligible to attend at the public middle school.
The school has many needs for general maintenance: It lacks paint, a dome, the bathrooms lack water, and there is no internet. There is no air conditioning in the classrooms. There is also a need for a support teacher and an assistant. Parents want the government to address these needs.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Wednesday nights at 8:45p, a new bicycling group invite people to join them for healthy recreation, meeting at Juarez & Abasolo. Lights required, helmet recommended. LINK
In June, fishermen in this region are banned from catching Lobster, Octopus, Shrimp, Conch & Shark Lobsters kept in captivity continue to be available, along with frozen tails. LINK
The baseball games at the El Pescador stadium in front of Chedraui are usually held on Sundays, starting around 1p, when there's a 'home' game. .

Turtle nesting season continues throughout June. The turtles nest along the eastern beaches in the wee hours of the night and Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in a pen outside the facility. Three species nest annually in Isla Mujeres; Greens, Loggerheads, and Hawksbills, and very rarely, a Leatherback will attempt to nest, but the sand usually isn't deep enough. The sex of the turtles is determined by the temperature of the sand, which is common in reptiles.

Whale shark tour season continues throughout June, ending in mid-September.
Saturday June 1 & Sunday June 2: "Dry Law" is in effect for 48 hours, from the first minute on Saturday (00:00, just after Friday midnight) until midnight on Sunday (24:00) when "To Go" (package) sales of alcohol is prohibited. Foreigners in tourism areas, such as Isla Mujeres, may purchase alcoholic beverages, with food, at bars & restaurants. Citizens can't buy alcohol & businesses such as convenience stores cannot sell it.

Saturday, June 1st Dia de la Marina. Events begin with a 5 kilometer race in men's and women's divisions, and another for teens and children, starting in front of Playa Centro at 7am and 8am, with more than 17,000 pesos in cash prizes. Limited to 150 runners in the 5k, and 150 in the youth and children's event.
The official ceremony for National Dia de la Marina will take place at 11am, with a procession of boats in the Bay and placing of a wreath.
On Playa Centro, a beach soccer tournament will start at 11am, with teams of eight people and prizes of 3000, 2000, and 1000 pesos. It will be followed by a beach volleyball tournament at 1pm with teams of two men & two women competing for prizes of 3000, 2000, and 1000 pesos.The festivities will come to a close at 2p, with a Palo Encebado contest.
