The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) reports that today there was a failure in the submarine cable that supplies electricity to Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, so staff are working to restore service. Many businesses suffered losses because they had to close their doors. Cell phone service was affected in some parts of the isle. LINK
Due to the power outage, the CFE is sending generators to Isla Mujeres to provide basic health services! Three will arrive at the Ferry in a few minutes (photo).

VIDEO showing what appears to a generator and the reporter says unofficial information indicates the failure, which is island-wide, occurred on the Continental side of the submarine cable, and it is unknown when it would be restored. (It was restored ~2:30a)

Photos of lobster tails. Lobster catching season has begun and continues until the end of February. The cooperatives have discretion about pricing, but they set it at 600 pesos/kilo for tails and 400 pesos/kilo for whole lobsters, which is ~$14 and ~$9 usd per pound.

Canadian tourist died while swimming
VIDEO of a boat at the pier by Muelle 7 on Rueda Medina, with police and officials, and the caption and narration say a Canadian tourist, approximately 45 years of age is on the boat who passed away, apparently from a cardiac arrest.

July 2 A Canadian tourist died at midday yesterday when he was swimming in the Parque Marino Nacional/National Marine Park, presumably due to heart problems, according to sources from the Prosecutor's office/Fiscalia. The tourist, Y.R.A., 43, was on a catamaran tour boat that offers recreation and swimming at Isla Mujeres. A witness who was being questioned by officials explained, "He dove into the water, and then we saw that he was not moving."
The boat went to Muelle 7 (Pier 7), which is along Rueda Medina, for the official procedures, where there were paramedics with the Red Cross, as well as municipal and tourist police officers. The family requested an autopsy, which will be done.
This is the first case of a tourist dying in these circumstances so far this year, when there have sometimes been two deaths in relation to heart disease. Thousands of tourists visit the Bay to swim, snorkel, and dive, and due to the effort required, those who have heart disease can have problems, according to providers of nautical services.
Synthetic turf being replaced at soccer field

A company from Monterrey had been working on renovating the soccer field for three weeks, and the removal of the old synthetic turf should be completed by Tuesday, when the next stage will begin. Players are concerned because they want to resume activities scheduled for July. Due to restrictions about information during the election period, the leagues were unable to obtain official information about the project. The previous turf had complete it useful life, and had lasted nearly a decade. There are no other soccer fields for the teams to practice, and they have requested that the renovation be completed quickly.
Electricity outage causes concerns

On Tuesday, electricity supply to the island was suddenly suspended about 3pm, and it is noted that there was an outage the night before for half an hour just before 9pm, during the ballot counting. (The power was restored briefly a couple times, and then came on for good ~2:30am this morning.).
It is also noted that there was a 15 hour outage in January 2017. Executives with the CFE said the problem that caused that outage was solved, after they renewed the cables that connect the submarine line with the substation at Playa Norte. They have been changing posts and making ongoing reviews of the network. These outages are usually brief, but they cause concern to the business owners.
(The Mayor explained that this outage was caused by a fault on the continental side in the line that supplies the submarine cable.)

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Mexico will electsa president for a single six-year term, and 628 members of the national congress, who for the first time in nearly a century can be reelected. Voters are also choosing nine governors, ~1600 mayors, and thousands of state and local lawmakers.
