On Tuesday, the two new ferries of the boat company "Naveganto" company arrived in Puerto Morelos, and are expected to arrive in Isla Mujeres on Friday. The company plans to operate them on the route to Puerto Juarez, and they are named "Doña Conchita" and "Lady Di". Each ferry has a capacity for 82 passengers in the air conditioned area, and 120 passengers on deck.
A company representative said it is possible that the new ferries may be in Puerto Juarez on Thursday to begin their docking tests and to follow up with the requests for their permits to operate on the Puerto Juarez route. LINK
Hundreds of dead fish at Salina Grande lake again LINK
Hundreds of fish were found dead in Salina Grande, the largest lake on the isle. The cause is unknown and the Ecology Department has not yet issued a statement. This has happened several times in the past (Note. In the past it happened in May, when the weather was dry, the temps were hotter, and the lake levels were low, and it was attributed to a lack of oxygen in the water. )
Celebration of 20th anniversary of the Park at Isla Contoy LINK
The event took place at the Environmental Culture Center on Isla Contoy, and recognition was given to the 20 years of conservation work, and to the people who helped establish the park. Historian Fidel Villanueva Madrid spoke about the history of this unique island. (Other invited guests and topics are given.)
The island of the birds is a refuge for more than 100 species of birds, both residents and migrants. This is the nesting area of the most important brown pelican population in the Atlantic, maintaining its numbers at around 400 birds. In the case of the frigate, the counts for ten years were found to be around 10,000 individuals, however, last year they counted up to 18,000. In the case of cormorants and (?pajaros bobos) their populations remain consistent.
Swallow populations continue to successfully nest most of the time, in addition to the variety of herons that feed and nest in the various lagoons. Thanks to the researchers, we know that some individual frigates have moved to the US coast.
The conditions of the coastal dunes, and having restricted public use to only 5%, has allowed the island to have the only viable population of brown lizards. However, the Park has not been free of exotic species, such as the coconut trees that were planted to solve problems of a lack of water, and the red mite and lionfish have invaded. Work is being done with the ASK alliance to control these two species, and it is also known that the cat shark is a natural predator of lionfish.
During these 20 years of conservation achievements, the island has ensured the economic sustenance of XX (sic) fishermen, and more than 200 service providers, as well as serving as a site of interest for dozens of researchers.
Fitness Activation Event by CROC Youths LINK
The public is invited to this event by the CROC union Youth which will take place Feb. 16 at 6p at the Hormiguitas Obreras park in colonia Amplificacion La Gloria. It is being coordinated by the Sport Dance Fitness of Quintana Roo. Ten musical genres will be shared for the enjoyment of the participants and there will be five instructors from the neighboring municipality of Benito Juarez.

Feb 5. At 10am at Media Luna Beach, Jesús Iván Guerrero Cruz, tercer maestro with the Navy, was walking in the area when Keith Clayton Helion, 47, from Baltimore was drowning 150 meters offshore. This area has claimed many lives, because there are dangerous currents, and swimming is banned there.
According to witnesses, the American ignored the warnings and went swimming with his friend, who also had difficulties, and suffered lacerations to his legs from the rocky area.
With help from a lifeguard at a nearby hotel, the Keith Clayton Helion was saved, and personnel arrived quickly from Civil Protection, and the police, as well as the Red Cross ambulance to transport him to the hospital.
The Naval soldier said, "I went in to rescue him; he called for help when he was about 150 meters from the beach. I had assistance from a hotel lifeguard." When he was thanked for his brave gesture, he replied, "I was off duty, but I am in the military, and on or off the base, it is my responsibility to assist the citizenry."
The tourist had taken in sea water and was kept sitting up in a plastic chair while waiting for the arrival of the paramedics to take him to the hospital.
In this area where swimming is forbidden, there are dangerous currents, rocks that are slippery, sharp, and submerged, as well as sea urchins and jellyfish. There is a warning notice, but it is suggested that more warning notices are needed, as well as considering having a tower and lifeguard there between 8am and 6pm.

Only the first paragraph of this article is given which says the Makax lagoon that provides protection to 500 smaller and medium-sized vessels when there is a threat of a hurricane.THe lagoon is suffering deterioration due to contamination and has become a cemetery of abandoned boats. This causes hydrocarbon pollution. There are also some docks, improvised to protect boats for tourist and fishing use, as well as systematic cutting of mangroves by occupants throughout the summer. There are at least a dozen abandoned boats, and a lack of regulation .

Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel.
