We are committed to keeping Isla Mujeres clean.
Despite the inclement weather, the Trash Transfer Facility continues working at 100%. LINK

José Guadalupe Ríos Chalé, general director of Public Services, reported that despite the rains that have occurred recently, the Trash Transfer Facility of Isla Mujeres has continued operations and is only occupied at ~20 percent of capacity. He said there is not overflow or saturation, and they are working at cleaning up and putting things in order. It is recalled that there had been an accumulation of 14,000 tons of trash for more than nine years, and in the first year of the present administration, they were able to clean it out entirely, and attended to this old problem.

In Isla Mujeres, we continue working so that our children and young people have decent spaces to practice their favorite sports. LINK   VIDEO
The municipal government of Isla Mujeres reaffirms its commitment to support sports through remodeling, construction, care and cleaning of public spaces that contribute to healthy lifestyles and allow children and youths of the island to practice sports.
Among the actions that have been undertaken by the City are the rehabilitation of the "Las Hormiguitas Obreras" park, the construction of the open-air gym on malecon by the Caribbean Coastal road,  remodeling of the fast soccer (rapid futbol) field in colonia "Salina Chica" and of the downtown basketball court "José del Carmen Pastrana", as well as the construction of the palapa at "Las Iguanas" park.
In order to recognize the talent of the island sportsmen who represented Quintana Roo in national sporting events during 2017, the Municipal Sports Award was handed out in the past.
"Support has been given to various semi-professional sports groups with the acquisition of new uniforms, equipment and the payment of coaches, benefiting approximately 1,500 athletes in the disciplines of basketball, football, basketball and baseball, and we will continue with those missing this year," said Natanael Gallegos Salinas, municipal Director of the Institute of Sport and Recreation.
In addition to the construction and rehabilitation of sports facilities and parks, the municipal government performs cleaning, painting and maintenance of courts, parks and sports spaces, so it encourages all island families to make good use of them, take care of them and keep them clean.

There was a barrage of complaints on social networks from tourists who want authorities to intervene in regard to reports from tourists who were in golf carts and say they were extorted by being charged "fines" in dollars without being given receipts.

Clearing brush at the Mundaca Hacienda

Municipal workers were cutting weeds and brush at the Hacienda that once belonged to the pirate Fermin Antonio Mundaca de Marecheaga.
According to the story, Fermín Mundaca took refuge in Isla Mujeres around 1860 to enjoy his fortune from the sale and trafficking of slaves from Africa to Cuba. Legend has it, in 1858 that, "he fell in love with a native of the island, nicknamed 'La Trigueña', and that inspired by it he built the hacienda with wells, arches and extensive gardens, which he called Vista Alegre and which is now known like Hacienda Mundaca. "However, the pirate did not conquer the heart of the woman, he always lived only with no more contact than with his servants and suppliers: fishermen, masons and farmers to whom he bought his products or services. This story is told by taxi drivers and guides to tourists during their journey.

These buildings of a century and a half in age have been objects of study by the National Institute of Anthropology (INAH) for some years, because in the surrounding area there are ruins of a Maya ceremonial center and vessels have been discovered that suggests that Mundaca destroyed part of our culture to build his hacienda.
An entrance fee of 30 pesos is charged, and the area of the gardens is now completely clear, and it is noted that there are very few mosquitoes at this time. It is noted that over previous decades, the structures and works of Mundaca have suffered and deteriorated from a lack of attention or maintenance and from vandalism.

Jan. 30  The Department of of Tourism said that on the previous day the municipality registered the previous day an overall  hotel occupation of 66.21 percentage points, of which 64.52 percent corresponded to the island and 67.57 percent, to the Continental Zone.
On the island,  the main streets and avenues reflected a good presence of visitors who, despite the varying weather conditions, opted to go out on Tuesday to enjoy a few hours of recreation, which did not include water activities of any kind because the port remained closed for small boats, which included a prohibition on navigation in El Farito or lagoon area.
While the nautical community has been affected by the port closures, the golf cart rental agencies say their business diminishes radically when it rains. One of the managers of an agency of Rueda Medina said currently demand is between 60 and 80 percent, but increases on Saturday and Sunday.

Fishermen are complaining that there hasn't been many days during January when they could work consistently. It is noted that the ban on fishing for grouper begins February 1 and continues until the first of April.
Baltazar Gómez Catzín, president of the cooperative "Justicia Social", said that in regard to lobster production, "As a cooperative, we can say that this season has been much better than the last one; previously I had told the media that by mid-December we already had the same production as at the end of the previous season, which was 22 tons of whole lobster, both live and dead and three tons of tails. We have caught another three tons of lobster during the days when it has been possible to go out to work. This season will close better than the last one." He said it was his understanding that the other cooperatives have also done well this season. There is only one month until that lobster ban begins on March 1st and it continues until the first of July.
