In Isla Mujeres we continue working so that all the island families feel safe.With the repair and placement of lights in the streets of our municipality, we have more peace of mind. LINK VIDEO
José Guadalupe Ríos Chalé, general director of Public Services, explained that since the beginning of the year 2018 the lighting of the Continental Zone began to be maintained, and during recent weeks lights have been repaired in the colonias of the island, benefiting all the families of the municipality.
An estimated 231 streetlights have been repaired in the island, but the work continues, according to Mr.Ríos Chalé, who explained that of what is planned, only the first phase has been completed in these first weeks of the year.

Did you know that the Chacmuchuch lagoon system makes up 11 percent of the total surface area of the municipality of Isla Mujeres, and represents the main "nursery" of underwater life in northern Quintana Roo? It consists of more than 12,000 hectares, (46 sq mi) in the Continental Zone. This info is from an old Por Esto article about the need to make it a Federal Protected Area, and how it suffers from illegal cutting of mangroves, contamination by leachates from the regional landfill that was closed 7 years ago, illegal dredging by tourist developments, and poaching of lobster and sea cucumber. It says the Partial Plan of Urban Development for the Intercontinental Zone, which is the area bordering Cancun and Isla Mujeres, authorized a density of 27,000 hotel rooms in an area of 1125 hectares (4 sq mi).

Feb. 1 The effects of Cold Front #25 dissipated yesterday which allowed the fishermen to go out to sea to catch lobster and fish, and it is expected that the weather will be good this weekend. They were out before 7am, into the waters of the Yucatan Channel to search for lobster, with only 27 days remaining for the season. On March 1, the four month ban will begin. Until 9am, the small boats could be seen crossing the waters northwest of the island.
One of the fishermen confirmed his plans to move his equipment to Contoy Island to take advantage of the next few available days, before the next from is expected in the middle of next week.
More than 100 divers from the five cooperatives on the island went sailing several miles east of Isla Mujeres to descend 10, 20, and 30 meters or more under the seabed in search of lobster. They also are take advantage of the good weather to catch fish.

The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has no work scheduled for this year, as it did during the previous triennium to carry out investigations in the northwest part of the site, where Mayan objects and construction was found. There are no plans by the municipality to restore the entire hacienda. The site was fenced three years ago. Clearing of brush was reported on by PE yesterday, which was done by the Parks and Museums staff, because the Hacienda doesn't have its own budget.
In past decades the hacienda of Fermin Mundaca de Marecheaga suffered vandalism, which isn't recent, and deterioration over the past century and a half. There were once arcs, columns, wells, and gardens of exotic plants, as well as an orchard and breeding areas for birds and cattle. The buildings from a century and a half ago, where there were once Mayan structures, according to INAH researchers who participated in recent investigations.
Mundaca took refuge in Isla Mujeres around 1860, after he had made his fortune with the sale and trafficking of slaves from Africa to Cuba. He fell in love with a young island woman "La Trigueña", which served him to build wells, arches and extensive gardens, which he called Vista Alegre and which is now known as Hacienda Mundaca.
He did not win the heart of the woman, he always lived alone, with no contact except with his servants and food providers. He went to die in Mérida, Yucatán. In the cemetery of the island there is a crypt that bears his name, but it was never occupied and is empty.
This tourist attraction also has an old house where there is a collection of historical photographs. A Mayan hut was built several years ago, so that visitors can see an example how our ancestors lived.It is open to the public from Monday to Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with an entrance fee of 30 pesos.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.
