Predicting high turnout of voters

Electoral officials were sworn in and the president of the Electoral Council, Manuel Garcia Garcia, predicted a high level of voter turnout for the election July 1st. The official said that there is no problem in meeting the schedule of the local electoral process of the Electoral Institute of Quintana Roo (Ieqroo) to carry out election day to renew the City Council (which includes the Mayor), the federal executive and the legislative branch.
Visits to determine the locations of the polling places on the island and in the Continental Zone will begin on Feb. 14. Registration for the candidates will take place April 1-10. The Candidacy forms will be approved on April 20th and campaigning can begin on May 14th. Citizens who are interested in being electoral observers can submit applications May 1-31st. Limitations on Governmental promotions begin on May 14 to encourage equal competition in campaigning.
In 2016, Isla Mujeres had a total of 10,537 votes cast, that represented 62.3 percent of the registered list of 16,921. That was a rate of 37.7% abstention. It is believed that there will be a list of ~20,000 registered voters in the municipality for the July 1st election, on the island and in the Continental Zone, and that turnout could reach 70%, according to the electoral authority.

Jan. 20. Last night, at a building on Guerrero Avenue, a section of ceiling fell, which caused the Civil Protection Department to inspect the building and to order the eviction of nearly a dozen residents.
Mr Manuel Medina Ojeda, a maletero (porter), explained that the incident occurred at 8pm, and fortunately he wasn't injured since he was not in bed when the concrete detached. He said that the building has ten living spaces and is owned by the Rios Fernandez family, who paid for the cost of a hotel for the night. This morning he began to remove his belongings, but he has nowhere to go, since he needs to find another apartment at a time when everything is in short supply.
He has lived there for 15 years and is asking that the owners grant him two months in a hotel or another location, to give him time to find a new home. As of 10am today, Civil Protection has ruled that the whole building is unsafe, and requested that the occupants move out. However, they are declining to do so because they have nowhere to go.
The two-story building is about 50 years old and seems to have completed its useful life, and therefore no one is being allowed to remain since there is a risk of partial or total collapse. The average life of constructions is three to four decades in this area with a high concentration of pollutants such as salt.
There is conjecture that when its imminent demolition is carried out, this could lead to a new project. Meanwhile there is uncertainty for the residents who are being evicted and whether they would be able to occupy it again. It is unknown whether the Rios Fernandez family will participate with more responsibility during this emergency situation.

NOTE: Formerly, the statistics about the annual number of passengers were given as "arrivals" and in 2016 the number of arrivals was 2.2 million. However the current Director of APIQRoo reports them as "movements", which includes both arrivals and departures, so each passenger is counted twice. She is reporting a 7 percent increase in 2017, with more than 5 million passenger 'movements' (arriving plus departing) at the island's two maritime terminals. (The other island 'terminal' refers to the car ferry pier for the Punta Sam route.)
In 2017, July was the busiest month with the movement of 510,029 passengers, followed by April with 483,414. December was in third place with 463,490, then August with 460,721, then January with 452,861. The slowest month was October with 328,829 passenger movements.
In 2017, the total number of passenger movements was 5,090,891. In the first half of last year there were 2,372,299 passenger movements.
Higher statistics are anticipated for 2018 since the new ferry company Marinsa has begun servicing the Isla Mujeres-Puerto Juarez route from the APIQRoo terminal in Puerto Juarez, and Ultramar is expected to being operating a passenger-car ferry from Punta Sam. It is also anticipated that Navegantu will enter competition on the Puerto Juarez route during the first quarter, and that a US company could become another competitor during the 2018 fiscal year.
APIQROO reports that in 2017, on the Puerto Juarez-Isla Mujeres route there was a movement of 4,648,069 passengers, which is an increase of 7 percent. On the Punta Sam-Isla Mujeres route, there was a movement of 339,104 passengers, which is an increase of 27 percent. The amount of cargo rose by 20 percent, which is well above Cozumel, where a 3.5 percent increase was recorded.
The main passenger terminal in Isla Mujeres receives Ultramar ferries from the Hotel Cancun Zone, and on this route, 247,522 passenger movements were recorded in 2017. It is estimated that on the Puerto Juarez route, about 80 percent of the passengers are tourists. Of the more than 5 million passenger movements, about 90 percent are attributed to the Ultramar company.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Saturday, Jan. 6 Día de Reyes/ King's Day This day commemorates when the three kings or Magi visited Jesus & is the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas. Traditionally this is the day when Mexican children receive gifts (which are brought by the three kings as opposed to Santa). It is customary to eat Rosca de reyes, a sweet bread that represents King Herod's crown with figurines of baby Jesus hidden inside. Whoever finds the token in their piece is obligated to host a party on Candlemas Day (Dia de la Candelaria), Feb. 2, which usually includes tamales.
Festival for King's Day (Jan. 6) at the el Pescador baseball field in front of Chedruai on Saturday starting at 5p. More than 6000 people are expected to attend to enjoy the entertainment, surprises, and presents.
There's also a toy giveaway at Ruben's restaurant on Guerrero, but as of 8am on Jan. 5, they're unsure what time....probably ~11am.
Jan. 6 is Día de la Enfermera. This special day was established in 1931, when Dr. Jose Villagrana said nurses were like a "regalo de reyes"...a gift from the Magi. (International Nurse's Day is celebrated on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale).
