Our commitment is that beaches and streets of Isla Mujeres are free of garbage. We will actively continue with the maintenance and cleaning programs throughout the municipality.

       Isla Mujeres has become one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Mexican Caribbean by domestic and foreign tourists, so the municipal government reaffirms its commitment to maintain and take care of this Pueblo Magico, for the benefit of those who visit it and live here.  
           Since the beginning of the current administration, the City of Isla Mujeres, through the Department of Public Services, has increased the cleaning work in its streets, avenues and public areas. 
       José Guadalupe Ríos Chalé, head of that department, said that one of the most important commitments for the current government is that all the inhabitants, both on the island and in the Continental Zone, have better living conditions, so having a clean and healthy environment is of vital importance. 
        He said, "The City has not stopped working to guarantee a clean island, we have redoubled efforts, and with the support of the citizens we are maintaining the best image of our municipality." 
         For this, more personnel were hired to reinforce the Sweeping Department, which now has a total of 34 street sweepers, who clean streets and avenues. 
         Likewise, the garbage collection service has been made more efficient, with the acquisition of new collection vehicles, covering a total of 14 routes in the Continental Zone and 6 on the island, seven days a week, in the morning, afternoon and evening. 
          In addition, there are ongoing campaigns for pruning and cleaning in the parks and gardens and the placement of street lighting has been carried out throughout the municipality. It should be noted that recently the Department of Public Services finished the clean-up of the Cancún-Isla Mujeres intermunicipal highway, guaranteeing those who have businesses in this area a good image for their clients.  
   Mr. Rios Chale said, "It is a commitment of all of us who are part of the municipal government to maintain the streets, parks and gardens of the island and Continental Zone in optimal condition for the benefit of all island families and our visitors, especially because maintaining a good urban image, is vital in a municipality that depends on tourism. 
        Therefore, the official requested the support of the community to not to throw garbage on the public roads and to clean the front of their houses, because that way they help to keep the municipality clean.


With a score of 73 to 57 the Marlins of Isla Mujeres won against the Tritones of Cozumel in the competition for the championship title of the State Basketball League. This game, which took place on the basketball court "José del Carmen Pastrana", was the first of the series-two of three games-between these two teams. The next one will take place in Cozumel, where it will be determined if there will be a third game between the Marlins and Tritones or if one of them will be crowned as winner of the State Basketball League.

Our home team continues to add victories towards the semifinals. We congratulate the Cahuameros for their victory 103 to 66 against the Manatees of Chetumal. If they have another victory against the Manatees on Sunday, they will be closer to winning the title. Currently in first place is the Universidad Modelo from Merida, Yucatan.

 Jan. 21  With the nice weather on Sunday, tourism activities resumed and it is estimated about 10,000 tourists arrived to the island. Boats were active in the Bay, taking tourists to visit El Farito, Sac-Bajo, Cruz de la Bahia, Los Manchones and Musa. They were also taking visitors to Isla Contoy. The fishermen were able to resume working.
   On land, all of the golf carts were rented and tourists were visiting popular sites including Punta Sur, Garrafón, Sac-Bajo and Mundaca. The beaches were busy with both foreign and national tourists. Downtown businesses were experiencing good sales. 
   Cold front #24 is expected in two days.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos,  Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30  minutes to walk downtown.

Saturday, Jan. 6 Día de Reyes/ King's Day   This day commemorates when the three kings or Magi visited Jesus & is the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas. Traditionally this is the day when Mexican children receive gifts (which are brought by the three kings as opposed to Santa). It is customary to eat Rosca de reyes, a sweet bread that represents King Herod's crown with figurines of baby Jesus hidden inside. Whoever finds the token in their piece is obligated to host a party on Candlemas Day (Dia de la Candelaria), Feb. 2, which usually includes tamales.

 Festival for King's Day (Jan. 6) at the el Pescador baseball field in front of Chedruai on Saturday starting at 5p. More than 6000 people are expected to attend to enjoy the entertainment, surprises, and presents.
  There's also a toy giveaway at Ruben's restaurant on Guerrero, but as of 8am on Jan. 5, they're unsure what time....probably ~11am. 

 Jan. 6 is Día de la Enfermera. This special day was established in 1931, when Dr. Jose Villagrana said nurses were like a "regalo de reyes"...a gift from the Magi.  (International Nurse's Day is celebrated on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale).
