The icon of Our Lady of Charity will remain on Isla Contoy until the end of February, when the lobster season is over, and then it will be returned to the church in Isla Mujeres. The departure time was scheduled for 8am and the procession arrived at the concrete pier shortly before 9am to board the boats and begin the maritime procession. It is estimated there were about 150 boats participating, including one from Ultramar carrying about 300 people.
The procession arrived at Isla Conty at 10:30am, and began disembarking and preparing for the Mass, which occurred at 11am. It was attended by about 1500 people, and officiated by Isla Mujeres priest Raul Sanchez Alonso. Afterwards there was a fellowship event among the participants who shared snacks and seafood dishes they had brought. Around 3pm the boats slowly departed, and by 4:30 they had all left Isla Contoy.

Controversy over resealing recently renovated road
Genera polémica resello de vía recién renovadaa.. [+] Ver masPhoto & full article at this link
Two of the three roadwork projects done by this municipal government were resealed to prolong their life, with the work concluding this weekend. This included over half a kilometer along the eastern coastal road, near the airfield, and more than a kilometer along Rueda Medina. Unofficial information indicates this was also done to a section of road between colonia La Gloria & colonia Caridad del Cobre.
Taxi driver Manuel Tec Eulogio is among those who question this work and he says they are using tar to try to cover up cracks and imperfections that have begun to appear. Some drivers question the quality of the material used when the road was renovated, and they say an investigation is also needed into why the project to move the overhead lines underground along Medina, downtown, was not completed.
The Office of Public Works responded to the reporter by explaining that the material was being applied to the roads as a sealant so that their lifetime will be prolonged.

Shortly before 9am, about 100 medium and small boats departed Isla Mujeres, carrying about 1500 people, demonstrating their faith by participating in the maritime procession to the fishing camp at Isla Contoy with the icon of Our Lady of Charity. This tradition began in 1998, and includes a Mass at the fishing camp, which was led by the parish priest Raul Sanchez Alonso.
At the last minute, two more medium sized boats joined in, with a combined capacity of 300 passengers, increasing the number of people who could safely make the 30 kilometer trip. They departed from the concrete pier and included small fishing boats carrying the families of the seamen, as well as large boats carrying many passengers, with safety protocols implemented by the Harbor Master and agency of Civil Protection.
The lead boat, Malu, was decorated and carried the icon, and the priest and his helpers, who sang during the journey, with obvious joy among the participants in that boat and the other boats. Passengers also enjoyed the impressive view of the lighthouse, which is more than 30 meters high and the tallest in the state. They had an opportunity to observe the birds and marine species of the reserve during their brief stay. Over a thousand people arrived to the fishing camp around 10am and left about two hours later, which occurs every year.
FNF protest against constitutional reform initiative

More than 100 people from various civil and religious organizations and from private families marched down Rueda Medina to the Town Hall to protest a presidential initiative for constitutional reform. This was part of a simultaneous protest in more than 120 towns and cities organized by the FNF, National Front for Families, who consider this proposal to be a threat to traditional families.
The group left the area of the Fishermen's monument and went south on Rueda Medina, to Morelos street carrying protest signs, amid police surveillance, with people joining the group. They say it is child abuse to teach children that gender can be chosen, and say they are not rejecting anyone because of their ideas of sexual preferences, but they are seeking to protect traditional families. This nationally organized march concludes the first phase planned by this organization.
Entrepreneurs want to regain autonomy in promotion
Decididos a recuperar autonomía [+] Ver masPhoto & full article at this link
A proposal is being made by a group of Isla Mujeres entrepreneurs to resume the management of ~10 million pesos collected from the three percent hotel tax (IAH) by the Fideicomiso de Promocion (municipal Office of Tourism Promotion) in 2017. They plan to present a letter to the transition team of the state government.
This group includes the vice president of the APHF (Association of Small Hotels Fascinantes), Gerardo Magana and Sulu Issac Martinez, former director of the IM Office of Tourism Promotion, well as the former president of CANACO, Javier Ortiz.
For the past two years, job of Promotion of Tourism in Isla Mujeres has been done by the OVC (Office of Visitors and Conventions in Cancun), and they say this resulted in the loss of the former Isla Mujeres website. They also oppose a proposal by the Cancun Hotel Association that all the promotional offices be concentrated in a single entity for all the destinations in Quintana Roo. They want each destination to control its own promotion and to be independent. They want it handled as it was previously.
