In Isla Mujeres, each year on September 16th, a traditional parade is celebrated with emotion and patriotic fervor, in remembrance of the beginning of the struggle for the independence of Mexico. There were 1315 participants from the primary schools, middle schools, high school and Navy of Mexico. 
En Isla Mujeres, como cada año se celebró con emoción y fervor patrio el tradicional desfile del 16 de septiembre, evento con el que se recuerda el inicio de la lucha por la independencia de México.
Mil 315 participantes de las escuelas primarias del municipio, las secundarias, el Colegio de Bachilleres y de la Armada de México.

The 206th Anniversary of the Grito of Dolores celebration took place in the Town Square, attended by thousands of islanders and tourists, which is a very special day of the year that fills all Mexicans with pride, because it is the day on which the Independence of our nation is celebrated.
Con la participación de cientos de isleños y turistas, se llevó a cabo el 206 Aniversario del Grito de Dolores en la explanada municipal, un día muy especial en el año que nos llena de orgullo a todos los mexicanos porque es el día en el cual se celebra la Independencia de nuestra Nación.

Slow season hits hard

  The head of the Isla Mujeres National Chamber of Commerce (CANACO), Juan Carrillo Figueroa, said, "Low season is hitting us hard." He said on Hidalgo Avenue, where Isla Mujeres nightlife takes place, there are long rows of unoccupied tables, and many waiters awaiting customers.
     Some businesses have temporary closures during the months of September and October, to reduce costs. Improvement is expected in late October, and a good winter season is forecast to start in November.
       Javier Ortiz, who has a business on Rueda Medina Avenue, said sales have been slow lately and that the summer season was not great. It is also noted that small businesses have difficulty competing with the franchises who have more buying power, better marketing strategies, and more capacity.

16 September    Those who are at risk or suffer from problems with high cholesterol, triglycerides, high blood pressure, or muscle pain can receive diagnostic testing without any cost at a health module which will be installed in colonia Canotal.
       Dr Roger Garcia Mendoza will provide this service on Saturday, October 1,  8a-1p for poor people, including testing of cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose. It is advised that those who attend be fasting. There will also be blood pressure screening, as well as for lumbar pain and muscle aches. Help with medications for treatment of these illnesses will also be available. The address is calle Flamenco, lote 17, manzana 134, in Cañotal, at Chiricuto.
    Good weather is expected Saturday, the last day of the season for whale shark tours.

   There were a total of 1315 participants in the Independence Day parade, including schoolchildren and the Navy of Mexico. There were no incidents, and tourists seeking to leave the island were not affected very much, because traffic was not jammed, and the detours were successful.
      The parade to celebrate the 206th anniversary of Mexican Independence began at 8am, on Rueda Medina Avenue, which was back to normal by 10am. All of the schools participated, public and private, walking up toward North Beach where the groups disbanded, with parents on the sidewalks along the way. The Naval contingent was at the conclusion of the parade, looking very attractive, and the officials of the municipality and Navy watched from the stand at the intersection with Morelos.
    Many of those watching the parade had not yet gone to bed from the celebration of the traditional Grito of the father of Independence, Miguel Hidalgo y Costillo.
       The Mayor was accompanied by the Queens of the event,  Montserrat García Delgado, Valentina Fernández Che and María Fernanda Fernández Garrido, who were the Señoritas Libertad, Patria and Independencia, respectively.

     By morning's light, in view of passing cars, empty beer cans could be seen around the Catholic church, left from the celebration of the Grito. Some people said drinkers had urinated on the walls of the Catholic meeting hall in the predawn hours. A steel railing was broken by the basketball court, and there was trash in the entry area of the Church, which is used for preparation of baptisms and weddings. When it was nearly noon, the trash had not yet been cleaned up, and it is noted that more trash receptacles should have been provided.
     Many establishments had special events for their customers to  celebrate Mexican Independence, and some hotel guests and neighbors complained about the noise. These included Arturo Cruz, who complained about the noise from the bar-restaurant "Stingray", which he said kept his baby from sleeping well. He said he was one of the neighbors who signed a letter to municipal officials several months ago complaining about noise from that establishment.

               Sat., Sept. 10-Boat procession to Isla Contoy departs at ~8am, This 17th annual procession will include hundreds of Catholics who will travel  30km, transporting the wooden icon to the chapel at the fishermen's camp.  A Mass will be held, and the people will return to Isla Mujeres afterwards, probably shortly after noon. The Virgin de la Caridad del Cobre is the patron saint of seamen and this icon from Cuba will remain in Isla Contoy throughout the lobster season, returning to Isla Mujeres in early March.

The 9th annual Diabetes Clinic will be November 3rd in La Gloria. We are a team of nurses, social workers, EMT's and paramedics with a doctor for consultation of patients who need to be seen immediately. Please consider donating $50 which would buy 200 test strips, enough for one patient for a year. We also need donations of reading glasses, particularly the higher numbers. Many diabetics have vision problems too. We have a drop off location at Marina Paraiso Hotel or will pick up wherever you are!
