Members of the Isla Mujeres taxi union (on the mainland) joined in strikes being carried out by their Cancun counterparts, to express dissatisfaction over the imminent entry of the company Uber to the neighboring town known as "El Paraiso".
The leader of the Isla Mujeres Taxi Union, Eduardo Peniche Rodriguez, said they decided to protest after holding a meeting with members of the state taxi union, Frente Unico de Trabajadores del Volante (FUTV). The work stoppage by dozens of cabbies was held from 12:00 to 12:30pm in the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres.
He said if the Uber service wants to enter the municipality of Isla Mujeres, both on the mainland and the island, they will take measures like they did today in the city of Cancun, with the intention of avoiding its introduction at all costs, which qualifies as irregular (not legal).
He said if Uber comes to Isla Mujeres, it could affect the income of hundreds of families who live on money from taxi service every day. He said they are appealing to the appropriate authorities to insist that they enforce article 31a of the state Traffic Law which stipulates that private passenger vehicles cannot provide public passenger transport service without authorization by the Chief Executive, or they will be penalized according to the provisions of this Act. SINTRA can apply fines of 800 times the Daily Minimum Wage which is 58,432 pesos. (~$3400 usd)

Taxistas say "Uber is not welcome"
No es bienvenido UBER en Isla Mujeres t.. [+] Ver masFull article and photo at this link
On the mainland area of the municipality of Isla Mujeres, dozens of taxi drivers of the union "Gustavo Diaz Ordaz" held a 30 minute work stoppage in to warn that UBER services are not welcome in that part of the municipality, nor on the island., after the United Drivers Workers Front of Quintana Roo agreed to this measure. (Frente Unico de Trabajadores del Volante de Quintana Roo)
Cabbies driving the red taxis around the principal tourist sites of the mainland  areas of Punta Sam and Isla Blanca said he leader of the union, Eduardo Peniche Rodriguez, was aware of this protest.
No official information has been released about initiation of the international company "Uber Tecnologies Inc", in Isla Mujeres, but the cabbies already have concerns about what could happen and what is happening in neighboring cities. Uber provides their customers with a network of private transportation via a digital application.
The protesting cabbies put anti-Uber slogans on their vehicles, after strong economic sanctions were applied by the Quintana Roo state government to the first vehicles who tried to start this service in Cancun and the Rivera Maya.
The head of the restaurant business organization CANIRAC in Isla Mujeres, Baltazar Maldonado, said this new type of service will offer an option for consumers who demand quality, efficiency, and good prices. He said that when the company has paid their fees and they have their documents in order to operate on the mainland, then certainly that should happen on the island. He said the taxi drivers have abused the trust of the people and have been inconsiderate of their clients.
The head of the National Chamber of Commerce in Isla Mujeres (CANACO), Juan Carrillo Figueroa agreed that this new technological application for transportation which is more efficient and personalized is 'parting the waters in the transport industry', which will affect the traditional taxi drivers, who will have to become more professional and trained, in order to coexist. He said, "I think this will bring an improvement in the cabbies to provide better customer relations and better vehicles.
They expect a positive response, as has happened in other cities and countries.

Dispute between brothers over Cuban restaurant El Varadero

In an interview with the media, Rafael Burgos Rios, who founded the restaurant two decades ago, said "I will defend El Varadero restaurant with my life, if necessary." Thursday afternoon inspectors from the municipal Treasury office said the restaurant was allegedly in violation of safety measures required by Civil Protection. He said this is part of a plan by his brother Alvaro who is trying to take it away, and using his political influence in local government.
In the company of his family with whom he is reconciled, after a legal confrontation, Rafael Burgos is in the middle of this municipal procedure. However, he said they have exhausted all legal recourse and dialogue to ensure the legal restoration of the operation of the property.
He is also a founder of the PRD (Partido de la Revolución Democrática) and said he will not bow to his brother who wants to get his hands on this business, which he says has been the result of his work and that of his family.  He accused his brother Alvaro of being a member of a group of delinquents who are not law abiding nor prudent.  He said, "Let them bring their 'cavalry' to try and dislodge us. They will not succeed. I will defend El Varadero with my life."
This restaurant which serves Cuban food has been very popular with many rich people, politicians, and athletes. Inside the wooden building which sits along a channel leading to the Makax lagoon, there are many photographs of Cuban politicians, including Che and Fidel Castro, among other images.  There has been a legal dispute over this property with the prestigious law firm defending the Rafae....the article ends mid-word

Traditional Grito celebration of Independence in Isla Mujeres
CELEBRAN EL TRADICIONAL GRITO EN IM. [+] Ver masFull article and photo at this link
In the presence of hundreds of local families and tourists, the traditional Grito of Independence celebration was read in front of the Town Hall, as it was 206 years ago by the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla.  The outgoing mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez was accompanied by the mayor-elect Juan Carrillo Soberanis. The reading of the 23 Articles of the Sentimentos de la Nacion by the Mayor began at 11pm. Before that, the beautiful young queens were crowned:  Monserrat García Delgado, Valentina Fernández Ché as María Fernanda Fernández Garrido,  as Libertad, Patria and Independencia, respectively.
The event began at 9:30 with the presentation of a folklorico dance group from Chiapas, in a festive atmosphere with many tables of vendors selling traditional foods, which were enjoyed by children and their parents. There were special security measures at the perimeter of the large crowd and two vehicle checkpoints at the edges of downtown, one at Juarez and one at Medina.
After the Grito was read by the Mayor, the celebrations continued among those presents, with tables for family members in the foreground and an area for the customary dancing.  The parade will be held at 9am (the City announcement says 8am) along Rueda Medina, which will be closed for traffic on Friday from 5am to noon. Advice about the detours is given.
