After Carnaval 2016 in Isla Mujeres ended on Tuesday night, there are five masses scheduled in the various churches of the island, to place the cross of ashes on Ash Wednesday. As follows:
Guadalupe Chapel in colonia Salina Chica 8am & 5pm.
Chapel of the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre at 6pm.
Immaculate Conception downtown at 7pm.
Sacred Heart Chapel in colonia La Gloria at 8pm.
The placing of these ashes is a reminder for Catholics that life on earth is temporary and one day their bodies will become dust, and that they believe in an ultimate life in Heaven. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, when Catholics spend 40 days dedicated to prayer, penance, and fasting.
It is noted that the world Carnaval means farewell to meat (carne) and its origin is related to ancient times when people lacked refrigeration; therefore the Christians needed to use up products before the start of Lent; not just meat, but also milk,eggs, etc, For this reason, many areas organized town festivals on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which were called Carnavals, where they would consume all the products that would otherwise spoil during Lent.

Carnaval ends without incident & with excellent participation
Carnaval came to an end on Tuesday night with an evening dedicated to fun and joy with choreographed dances, festive music, ingenuity, and creativity; as dozens of participants gave their best on the Town Square stage, before the curtain went down until next year. During the celebrations, contests, parades, and the crowds on the Town Square there were no bad incidents, and therefore a "saldo blanco" according to the Department of Safety and Traffic (the police).
For five days, normal activities on the island were on hold, in deference for the fun and festive spirit that is characteristic island people of the Caribbean and a part of their identity. Each of the troupes that participated in the Carnaval celebration received applause and recognition from hundreds of people attending each of the events.
The presentation of the comedy show of recognized entertainer Namu Nani met expectations and was one of the most memorable nights in this Carnaval whose theme was “El Escenario del Mundo” (Scenes of the World, or World Stage).
This year there were several features of note: upon the initiative of the DIF, social service agency, there were people with disabilities involved, who presented their King and Queen. Upon the initiative of City government, there was a Queen of sexual diversity, to encourage respect and inclusion of all sectors of society, without compromise to their dignity. To integrate and involve the local children in folk traditions, families were invited to join in the dance troupes and for the little children to dance. To integrate the three areas which make up the municipality, the Island, the Continental Zone, and the Agricultural Area, for this event the urban area of Rancho Viejo participated with their troupe, who received enthusiastic applause from the audience.
The Organizing Committee expressed its sincere congratulations (gratitude) to the more than 1000 participants, and especially to their families, because without their valuable support, this Carnaval would not have been the brilliant and exciting festival which it was this year.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Stroll five minutes southward down the coastal sidewalk to Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, or Manolitos. Walk less than 10 minutes southwest to shop at Chedraui or to dine at Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, or other options. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Our guests recommend the Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants.
