Everything is ready for the Artisans Exposition
Sr. Gonzalez said, "We are excited and dedicated, because this is the first time that an event of this nature and importance is being held in Isla Mujeres, and it is thanks to the kind efforts of Agapito Magana Sanchez." One of the objectives of the Artisan's Craft Exposition is to present products that are made in Quintana Roo, for the benefit of the family economies, facilitating new opportunities for marketing. With the participation of artisans who can promote their creations for their own economic development, the event also offers stimulus and incentive for production, and for the creation and organization of artisanal communities.
During the nine days of the event, the artisans will be provided with security and facilities for their hygiene and comfort to ensure the success of these micro-entrepreneurs, and to provide an appropriate environment for their businesses, and to establish marketing connections.
For Isla Mujeres, this artisanal event is of particular importance since the town's recent appointment as a Pueblo Magico of Mexico, allowing it to be a showcase to the world of the artistic creativity of its people, demonstrated by its artisans. Those who participated in the planning, organization, and implementation of this major event include the State Ministry for Economic Development, the Department of Artisanal Development in coordination with FONART, and the City of Isla Mujeres.

Pope Francis visits Mexico
“Caricia de Dios para el pueblo mexicano” [+] Ver mas
This article is about an telephone interview with the Archbishop of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Fabio Martínez Castilla, who is originally from Isla Mujeres, concerning the upcoming visit of Pope Francis to Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas. The Monsenor will meet the Pope at the airport and probably accompany him to Tuxtla in the helicopter and then in the Popemobile during his tour of the city, as well as during the blessing of the image of John Paul II at the Cathedral. The Pope will speak to families at a stadium with a capacity of 60,000 people, where there will be giant screens so the people can see and hear.
Efforts against mosquito born diseases like Zika
Ventivas contra el zika [+] Ver mas
Prevention measures against mosquito borne diseases like Zika were intensified recently, and on Thursday efforts were taking place at the southern part of the island to Garrafon Park, which will continue thru the weekend, said Jorge de la Cruz Velazquez, Director of the Vectors Department.
The Director led the work personally, which began in the mangroves of the Makax; in the area in front of the colonias of Miraflores, Canotal, and La Gloria. They advanced up the areas along the perimeter road, and in front of the Bay, combing through the area to Playa Indio. They plan to reach Garrafon on Friday.
They are focusing on areas that could be a source of dengue, although so far there have been no cases (in 2016). It was announced in Por Esto that former alderman Francisco Aguilar Moguel had come down with Chikungunya recently, who lives at the southern part of the isle near the hurricane shelter. This area is scheduled for spraying. According to public health officials at all three levels of government, there has been no cases of Zika on the island.
They are applying the insecticide "Chlorpyrifos" via smoke that extends for several meters and becomes denser and within five seconds of exposure, mosquitoes die. Prolonged exposure is required, to potentially be toxic to humans; yet some people fear having it inside their homes and often turn away the people who spray.
They are fumigating in the mangrove areas, focusing on the areas where mosquitoes are likely to breed and where outbreaks of mosquito borne diseases are most likely to occur. About 15 liters of "Clorpirifos" are applied daily to keep the island free of diseases like Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, and Malaria, according to the office of Vectors of the state Health Department of Quintana Roo.
Efforts are also being made on the mainland, and the government is promoting public awareness of the importance of keeping properties clean, and turning containers upside down to avoid standing water. The Federal health authorities urge everyone to participate, including those in areas where there have been no cases, and to protect the tourism areas of Quintana Roo, to avoid panicking of the tourists who visit here, if a visitor were to be infected.

Alarming erosion of sand
Alarmante .. [+] Ver mas:Photo & Article here
Young coconut palm trees disappeared due to beach erosion with recent norte cold fronts, in the area where the geotubes have deflated (by Playa Sol, near the intersection of North Beach and Playa Centro). There were seven "whales" (geotubes) placed nearly a decade ago, which were not properly maintained, and began breaking up last year. This is also the area where the submarine electrical cable is located and the tourists who walk thru the area must go around the objects which protect the cable.
When the winds cause North Beach to be less suitable for recreation, people move to Playa Centro (aka Posada Beach), to stay warmer out of the northern winds. In a few weeks, the orientation will change, and winds will come from the south when it is spring.
Concerns there could be an "invasion" of Israeli businesses
Temen una invasión de negocios israelitas.. [+] Ver mas
A restaurant manager on Hidalgo Avenue, who declined to give his name, expressed concerns about activities at the ChabadHouse, and that it could represent an "invasion" of businesses by Israelis, which could affect other tourism service providers. The anonymous manager says that the ChabadHouse was initially set up by several Israelis as a place for prayers, in Hebrew, and he alleges that now they are practicing unfair competition by operating a restaurant and arranging activities on a commission basis for golf cart rentals, tours, and other tourism services for profit.
Merchants anonymously recall that ChabadHouse, or house of prayer, soon became a small restaurant, although the Israelis always insisted they were preparing food for their private meetings. The anonymous manager says although you can only see a lobby from the street, there is a restaurant upstairs, named Falafel, and he questions whether they have a permit to have a for-profit business or for a house of private prayer.
A merchant who wants to remain anonymous said, "Fortunately, the Israelis haven't 'invaded us' with businesses everywhere, which happened with the Cubans. At this time there are only two or three, at most, but there are concerns that this number could increase." He said, "I don't object, because everyone is entitled to honest work, and on the island everyone from all over the world opens restaurants or souvenir stores. The problem is when they are selling other things that affect us, which has (allegedly) happened with Falafel, where, for commissions, they are leasing golf carts, fishing tours, diving tours, packages to theme parks and to ruins and others, where supposedly there is nothing more than a restaurant."
He said in the past, those who opened the ChabadHouse said it was not a restaurant, but everyone watched the deliveries of sacks of vegetables and other foodstuffs. The anonymous merchant said, "In addition to (allegedly) practicing unfair competition and having several businesses within one, they have installed a neon sign, which is prohibited by the Regulations for the Urban Image. They have not turned it on, but there it is. It is annoying that they have opened a center for prayer which in reality is a multi-business that affects everyone. We don't know what their zoning permit allows nor what permits they have, but I can say there is a great deal of dissatisfaction among the tourism service providers, especially those who have businesses near this establishment."
