Preparations begun to celebrate "Day of Fishermen"

 Para celebrar Día del Pescador

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 22 de septiembre.-
Activities are being organized for the Day of Fishermen, October 8th, which are expected to include a public event commemorating the fishermen who have lost their lives at sea, with two awards for their families. It is also expected that there will be acknowledgement and appreciation from the Mayor and other officials for the work done by the fishermen throughout the year.

Intense work for prevention of Dengue and Chikungunya

En la lucha contra el dengue y chikungunya: Intensas labores de prevención

Lanrry parra

ISLA MUJERES, 22 de septiembre.-
The municipal Director of Health, Tharin Sadat Vital Casique, said they are continuing to conduct intense activities of fumigation and more community involvement with eliminating breeding areas for the mosquitoes that cause dengue and chikungunya. Due to increased presence of the disease in the state of Yucatan and in some municipalities of this state, it is critical that families of this municipality are aware and are keeping their yards and patios clean of areas where water can collect and mosquitoes can breed.
He said it is important to note that this mosquito does not develop in the mangroves, and it is only in homes and the property around them where the larvae grow, so the participation of every family is critical in order to continue to be a town that is free of Chikungunya. There are personnel assisting in these efforts to fight these two diseases who include volunteers and city employees, as well as staff with the State Dept of Health Vectors section.
The municipal Director of Health said, "The issue is elemental if everyone participates, because if there are no mosquito breeding grounds, there is no dengue or chikungunya."

Fighting against Dengue and Chikungunya: Never dropping our guard

Let us pass! Don't run us over!
¡Déjalos pasar, no los aplastes!
It says....
Campaign for the protection of crabs
Blue crabs    Red land crabs
Every year, between August and November, these two species leave the mangroves and go to the sea, and then return, for reproduction. In the case of the Blue Crabs, this happens during these months when the moon is full, and for the Red Land Crabs, this occurs 7 to 10 days after the full moon. Crabs are crustaceans that are very important to the ecosystem, because they are its "cleaners". They eat invertebrates, algae, dead fish, and other species that are decomposing. These crustaceans are food for many other sea species and coastal birds.
The crabs in the drawing are thanking the taxi driver for kindly stopping and not running them over.

Isla Mujeres, a municipality full of art. Don't miss it! (Translation below in the events section)

After a mosquito bite you can acquire Dengue or Chinkungunya. Take precautions!
A través de la picadura del mosquito se puede adquirir el dengue y el chinkungunya. ¡Tomemos precaución!
It says....
Remember that a mosquito bite is the only way to acquire dengue or chikungunya. It is in your hands to avoid and overcome this. Keep your yards and patios clean! Take care of your health and that of your family and community.
Clean containers that can collect water, cover water tanks, throw away trash that can collect water, turn containers upside down, such as trash cans and buckets.
Don't self medicate! If you experience symptoms of fever, headache, rashes, bone and muscle pain, and nausea and vomiting, see a doctor immediately!
Where there are no breeding grounds, there are no mosquitoes. Where there are no mosquitoes, there is no dengue and chikungunya.

The Chairmen of the Board for the Hyperbaric Chamber, Baltazar Gomez Catzin, explained that a loan was obtained for 40,000 pesos for the replacement of materials needed to maintain the chamber. He said this might sound like a large amount of money, but the materials are costly and their prices are often quoted in dollars.
This special equipment is necessary because items undergo tremendous pressure within the capsule. The equipment includes masks, nozzles, a new LED lighting system, and oil for compressor maintenance, as well as oxygen regulators and a three wire electrical penetrador. These items have already been installed, and this expense was incurred to ensure the safety of the fishermen.

An official announcement has not been made but there appears be some changing of positions within the City government, which could take place during the City Council meeting today.
Edgar Gasca Arceo is leaving his position as Director of Social Development to take the place of Juan Carrillo Soberanis as Legislative Representative in State Congress. It is thought that the former legislator, Juan Carrillo, may take the position of municipal Secretary General, and then the Secretary General, Cesar Poot Perez, may take the position left vacant by Edgar Gasca of Director of Social Development.
The change in the legislator's position was confirmed by legislator Maribel Villegas, who chaired the session where Edgar Gasca was sworn in, who now presides over the Cultural Commission.

The owner of the boat, "Togue II" is expected to present his documentation to the Harbor Master today, which will then be released. The 22 foot boat, registered with the port in Progreso Yucatan, was rescued by members of the Navy on Sept. 3 after it suffered mechanical problems about 60 nautical miles from the Isla Mujeres. The owner, William Sanchez, is from Progreso, Yucatan and has had some difficulty getting to the island to present the documents, resulting in the delay. The crew were of Cuban origin, and were able to  provide documentation of their legal status in Mexico, explained the Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil.

Concerned about eroding cliffs collapsing
Temen que desaparezca la isla+] Ver mas
Islanders living in the area between Amplification la Gloria and the FOVISSSTE housing are 'sitting on a powder keg'. The extreme erosion that has occurred to the cliff could cause a serious landslide in the event of a major hurricane, such as Gilberto in 1988, which wiped out a stretch of that road, which was later rebuilt. There are concerns that the construction in this area of a malecon seawalk and of the development "Isla 33" have also caused erosion. Various rocks have detached and fallen onto the beach below, and some 'caves' have formed, which means the walkway, sidewalk, and road are on less firm ground.
The Hurricane Gilberto changed the face of the island, especially at South Point where 40 meters disappeared, and the Temple to the Goddess Ixchel was nearly destroyed, and would have plunged into the sea if three or four meters had collapsed, to be mixed with rocks that fell because of the wild winds.
When making a tour by sea around the eastern side of the island and observing the section between the FOVISSTE apartments and colonia Amplification la Gloria, it can be noted that the erosion in this area increased considerably after Hurricane Wilma in 2005, when parts of the cliff broke away and in some places, huge rocks fell and landed below. Beach areas also disappeared that were traditional nesting areas for turtles, and today are nothing more than piles of rocks. The previously weakened cliffs are now in worse condition, and the limestone that makes up the cliff is severely eroded in some places, which, curiously, coincide with the section where the walkway was built and that is in front of the development "Isla 33", which since its inception has generated bitter criticism from the families living nearby.
The vibrations from heavy machinery used to during the development's construction caused cracks in their foundations and weakened walls in their homes. It is suspected that these same vibrations have equally affected the cliff, and neighbors in the area question the wisdom of authorities who authorized the Isla 33 project and who chose to build the walkway in this location that is weakened.
There are older people who say this erosion has always been a problem, and is part of the nature of the island, which is composed of limestone that crumbles easily in hurricanes. They say that also, every year the northern winds and the ocean currents cause the rocks to erode little by little.  This is especially the case on the eastern side, which faces the open sea, and one property owner along Juarez Avenue said in some cases 50 percent of the lots have been lost in hurricanes. He said in his case, his title says his property extends 30 meters, but erosion from hurricanes has caused a loss of nearly 20 meters.

Hi all!! We (Isla Animals) are gearing up for a HUGE Spay/Neuter, Vaccination, Wellness campaign for the animals in Rancho Viejo Nov 17-22. This is a very poor area in the municipality of Isla Mujeres. Most are living without electricity and running water. The situation for the animals there is dire right now with parvo & distemper running rampant, and heavy overpopulation. We expect to treat/vaccinate/spay/neuter 1000 cats & dogs with the cost of surgery at just $10us per dog. This may be the only time any of these animals see a vet. We can treat the existing animals, vaccinate others against disease, curb the population growth, and educate pet owners on proper animal care and make a HUGE DIFFERENCE!! We have the knowledge, experience, volunteers, and heart to make it happen. We are asking for all of your help to raise funds to make the campaign a reality. (We can also accept Paypal donations via our site islaanimals.org - just add RANCHO VIEJO in message, and cash in person on Isla Mujeres. Please, please share the link on your social media. It helps us so much. If you are not in a position to donate PLEASE do read the campaign & share, there is lots of excellent info in it about the work we do-There is always so much to do! Thank you for your time! http://www.gofundme.com/isla-animals-rv
