"La Dorada del Caribe" Women's Fishing Tournament
Colorido festival
Durante el Torneo de Pesca Femenil “La Dorada del Caribe”
Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 27 de junio.-
In a colorful, celebratory atmosphere, the horns sounded to start the
second edition of the Women's Fishing Tournament "La Dorada del
Caribe", led by the mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez, accompanied by his wife, Marthy Vargas de Leon Magana, as well as legislative representative Juan Carrillo Soberanis; SEDESOL representative Fabián Vallado, members of the City Council, and representatives from the Navy. Also in attendance were the organizing committee, other officials, and the general public.
Fifty three boats participated in the event, which took place at the concrete pier. Before the starting horns, the island priest blessed each of the boats and expressed hopes that the event would run smoothly.
For this edition, in response to requests, the fee was reduced by 50 percent, from 3000 pesos to 1500 pesos, to make the tournament accessible to more women. The awards included 70,000 pesos in cash, a motorcycle, a stay in Cuba, among other attractive prizes.
The traditional Captain's dinner was held the evening before the tournament, at the magnificent tourist center of Punta Sur.

ISLA MUJERES, 27 de junio.-
See yesterday's translation about eight whale sharks being seen in Aguas Azules, whereas previously the licensees had been finding just one or two, in a remote area 50-60 miles from Isla Mujeres, near Cabo Catoche. They have also been thwarted by bad weather. Now they are hoping for, and expecting, large numbers of whale sharks to arrive in July, and to be able to spend less time and money traveling.

The Director of Public Works, Muguel Caballero Garcia, explained that there are various reasons why the price was higher, such as the special features that are required for the materials and fixtures, because the location has such high salinity. He said in the case of the lights, they are very expensive and specially designed to resist the strong salinity of the area and to have a longer life.

Licensees hoping for a miracle
They say for now they can only wait and hope, because according to them there is nothing they can do. A delegation of islanders went to Mexico City last week to convey their strong objections to the new management plan, which reduces the number of departures by the licensees.
This has not only brought negative consequences for the 160 licensees of the island (Isla Mujeres), it has also brought problems for the tour boats of Holbox, since departures are decreased for everyone, and therefore their incomes are decreased. The licensees are awaiting a determination in response to their visit, but so far there nothing has occurred.

Locals and tourists sought relief from the heat in the sea, while some tourists enjoyed touring the island in golf carts. The heat was sweltering and at 6:30pm it was 30 degrees in the shade, with no wind.
Some families were at home, using their fans, while watching the Mexico-Costa Rica soccer game. Visitors touring in golf carts encountered roadwork in colonia Canotal, on Rueda Medina avenue, where one kilometer is being repaved.
There were no boat tours to Isla Contoy, because it was closed for general cleaning. The weather forecast from CONAGUA (National Water Commission) predicts an 80 percent chance of rain with winds up to 40 kilometers per hour, with effects of Tropical Wave #10 entering the area on Monday.

There is no hurricane wall north of Media Lucha (sic..Luna) beach, leaving this area of the hotel zone, which includes homes and businesses, unprotected in the event of a strong hurricane, such as Gilberto which struck the isle in 1988. "We need authorities to responsibly continue improving the plan for strengthening security and maintaining the integrity of the island," said a woman who declined to reveal her identity when her opinion was sought on the issue.
